One of my all time favourite songs ever. In London in the 80's in the pub people would get pissed off because I would put this song on 5 times in a row !!!!!
@goodkarmafollowsme wow!, your a self centered dick................i wanted to kill (literally) this dude who put hotel california on 3 - 4 times in a row at my local bar. Have some respect for others at the bar (you probably really did piss off people at your bar)
Never understood the direction Madness took toward the end of their initial career; this song and others like "Wings of the Dove" don't really work for me. Perhaps you had to living there at the time?
It's nothing to do with Northern Ireland! The intro refers to 'Get Carter' - which stars (guess who?) and the style is the 60s Harry Palmer films. The supporting actors are cast to look like those from Ipcress and Funeral in Berlin....
@staffsyeoman nope...it is about the troubles in northern ireland, specifically about an informer called Sean O'Callaghan who prevented a bomb at a duran duran concert that princess diana was due to attend, nothing to do with get carter or in fact micahel caine.
last heard this song back around 1984, was only 3 years old growin up with me mum while me dad was at work, 30 years old now and just heard it again this week for the first time and actually remember it.. absolute magic :)
@ChrissyboyH44 you like alllllllll youtubers have the most amazing memory. Forget the fact that most people's memory doesn't kick in until around 5-8 years of age (rarely 5, most of the time 6 1/2 and up) and yet all yall amazing youtubers can remember a song from 2-3 years of age, WOW!
@rwk1983 I will forget the 'fact' 'many' peoples memories only kick in at 5-8 and remember the fact that many other people's kick in earlier, I remember loads before the age of 5.
@slurpeeslurpee1 fuck off get a life, get a sence of musical taste then come back here and say something good about this song or the entire world of madness will beat you to death, alright
One ot Madness"s best in my opinion.Should be included in the live concerts.Suggs is great but it makes a nice change to hear a different vocal. The endless tallent of Madness,THE MUSIC NEVER AGES AND THE NEW STUFF IS JUST AS GOOD.
I'm greatly impressed by the fact that Madness appear to be appreciated by such a diverse section of society, and I'm also pleased that Madness have such an international appeal. This is music that will definitely not be appreciated by some of the record buying pond life, but as long as the 5 year olds have got their Girl bands/Boy bands, then I'm sure that everybody will will be happy.
Very pleasant song to listen to, even though it seems to have to do with "the troubles". First time hearing this band. I was searching for Michael Caine, but I'm glad I came upon this, it's really good. Is this from 80's, or the 70's? I'll have to listen to some more MADNESS
@noole1994 Don't worry if you don't understand as their isn't really any storyline. Actually the song is about a hypothetical British 'informer' during the Northern Irish troubles. Guess the link to the actor Michael Caine is he famously played a British spy in the 1965 film Ipcress Files.
@hkpho0ey and to underline that link to the actor, Sir Michael recorded the 'My Name, is Michael Caine' line just for this song , after his daughter convinced him to reconsider his earlier refusal.
@ssithl Guess that would be Natasha Caine as it's his youngest.
Although may be another link to a Caine film. Having just listened to it again due to your reply. Whilst I don't think is a direct quote from a film I think the very first line "If there is one thing worse than a murderer it's a dirty rotten stinking grass..." is a link to another film. Probably too out of character for Harry Palmer (Ipcress File), however I could imagine a gangster like Jack Carter (Get Carter) saying it.
Anyone notice the name at the beginning of the credits - "A Maurice J. Micklewhite Production?" Ironically, that's Michael Caine's proper name. I guess that's a sort of reference to the actor as well as the paper shredder. The car belonged to Lee Thompson.
It's actually about an informant ("grass") during the Northern Ireland Troubles. It mentions Caine because, at the time he was best known for his role in a spy film: The IPCRESS file.
Pretty well hidden then! The use of Michael Caine, the fact that the video is based on the Ipcress File and that Harry Palmer (Caines character in the film) say s "My name isn't Harry, but in this business it's hard to remember whether it ever had been" makes me think otherwise and would put this down to good old accurate wikipdia.
