  • Grande Mike Oldfield!! La fai parlare la chitarra!

  • Emotia succesului i-a stopat activitatea. E tare ,poate mai da cel putin odata lovitura.!

  • Never saw this originally on the telly - but he looked so uncomfortable....

  • Amarok was already on his mind..........what year is this? 86? 87? .... 4 or 5 years before it was released. Great Amarok and great MO

  • ahahahah... mike LOLfield...

  • @Lioanimals1977 Why LOLfield may i ask?

  • Reading a small portion of this ongoing thread indicates to me where all the REAL fools are. If you're looking for arguments from endless strangers you'll never know, you need to get the hell away from your computers right now and go outside!

  • "That's an acoustic guitar, isn't it?" And Mike has to check and make sure it is, chuckling! I love it!

  • one tubular bells with chips please.

  • That chick wants Mike's nuts so badly.

  • I don't know why, but I felt they were underrating him in this video. I mean... Oldfield is a great musician, genius actually. All his songs have the perfect balance between musical complexity and, somehow, "sentimental" lyrics.

  • If he flopped his old fella out and no cameras were around she would have sucked the cock snot out of his bell end

  • 1:54 Incredible musician, but is this a "Paint It Black" sample?

  • "Oooh, you can really hear the orchestration in that". Patronizing old bint.

  • there are parts of amarok on the sallyangie album way back in 1969

  • amazing!

  • So mike plays like a legend and she says....''Thanks very much that's really great' I hope Shes not kicking herself for saying that!.....she says ' you sort of write like you're an orchestra' so mike replies 'do I?' lol Hes a genius!!!!! This mans being told how she thinks he sounds! Lol

  • Gosh i remember this as a kid. C'mon pesenters! You're seeing in front of your eyes a genius, and all they can say is 'yes that's rather lovely mike' !!!!! Where's the excitement, the great applause- no wonder he never did telly much, who could blame him lol

  • Mike probably feels like Columbus trying to explain to Natives how he just crossed the Big Water...

  • fk they all sounds like pompus twats. 'really, oh laa, fascinating, spliffing'

    bravo mike

  • I enjoy Taurus III and II

  • forget the barbi doll. this is an amazing piece of guitar play. i loved it,thank you very much for posting this

  • Those presenters are fags

  • its complex stuff, because its mike oldfield,

  • From Spain: This man is the best guitarrist on the world, possible in the human history

  • @borrachocabron Now thats a crazy statement, especially because its coming from Spain, where Paco de Lucia is from too. Mike Oldfield is one of the greatest composers alive, but for his guitar skill i can say, well, there are probably at least 1000 better players just in your country.

  • What song is it at 1:19?

  • @Narrakan: it's another bit that was later included in Amarok, as "TV-AM".

  • An unique way to play guitar.

  • his response to her stupid accusation is just brilliant at 3:27 :D

  • One of the greatest musicians/guitarists ever

  • Love the snobs commenting on this vid spouting "the fools, Philistines etc"

Just shut up and get to grips there is other people in the world cept you.

    Good stuff mike!

  • Such a great guitarist, how come he isn't in rolling stone??

  • @SadeofDarkness because rolling stone sucks arse

  • @SadeofDarkness Durghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!

  • Mike doesn't play guitar. He is the guitar. This guy is gifted.

  • Superb guitar music.

  • Excellent, could anyone tell me what tuning mike's in?

  • @saul446 standard tuning with low E string dropped to D

  • he's the best !!

  • se lige,,,,,Hun kigger kun ind i hans øjn

  • Mike Oldfield's a tremendously skilled guitar player. But I guess that tends to be obscured by the popularity of his own work.

  • pero que pedazo de mierda de programa , parece tele5 por dios "tu ya no puedes tocar tubu....absurdaaaaaaa"

  • The word genius doesn't even cover it.

  • Grande,Grande,Grande Mike Oldfield.

  • she had wet pants while listening to him :D

  • You can really hear the orchestration in that!

    fucking retard

  • damn he is great.. and damn those two could have been better prepared.. great though

  • ''Mike Oldfield'' He is who he is. I'm just glade God give hem to us. Thank you.

  • Poor Mike. He's painted into a corner by an idiotic series of questions and comments. And I've always assumed he was somewhere towards the right hand side of the Asberger's spectrum.

That comment about him being being accused of being an electronics wizard...Jesus Christ, the dude didn't use a single synth on the album for which he's most famous. I mean, suggesting that Oldfield, one of the world's great multi-instrumentalist, is some sequencer-punching charlatan or something...

  • 1:16 that woman has seen genius and she knows it.

  • I can do that........ but I don't wanna

  • Who the hell acused him of only being a button pusher or electric wizzard?

  • Fantastic! I love the Amarok intro that melds perfectly into Taurus 3. Now where the heck did they find these mindless hosts? I'd be snarky too, it's hard to tolerate extreme idiocy like this! I'm twitching from it decades later and thousands of miles away!

  • Great 5 Stars!

  • Mike behaves like a living juke-box :) Less talk, more music!

  • Mike does come across as thoroughly unpleasant and snarky in this at times, it has to be said. Trouble is, he was having some ridiculous statements coming his way, such as - "You can really hear the Orchestration in that". Great music in the video aside, it was the meeting of air head presenters and a man who although a genius with his music, is not known as the most socially condusive man.

  • That first bit is VERY Leo Kottke, with Oldfield's own style to boot. Oldfield is a genius.

  • "You can't still play Tubular bells can you?" Stupid bitch. What a stupid question.

  • Comment removed

  • @iCONICAACINOCi Let's face it , Ann Diamond isn't exactly an authority on intellectual music now is she!

  • @iCONICAACINOCi Maybe I'M wrong but actually I think she says "You can't s t o p playing Tubular Bells" which makes the question a bit less stupid ;)

  • @Yerodineran

She actually asks "You can't just play Tubular Bells can you?", which isn't so much a question as a request. She may not use her actual words 100% correctly, but she means "Would you please play a bit of Tubular Bells".

  • @Yerodineran Yeah, you are wrong. She asks "You can't still play tubular bells, can you?", to which he replies sarcastically (justified) "Urm, I think so". If she said "You can't stop playing tubular bells can you?" the intonation on the "can you" was wrong, and he wouldn't have replied "Urm, I think so". Because if he was agreeing with her, he'd have had to have said "Urm, no I can't".

  • @Yerodineran What is your problem with accepting the fact that she asked him if he can still play it? It's a daft thing to ask, and it got a daft answer. Why are you trying to come up with alternative things she could have said which wouldn't have been so bad?

  • @iCONICAACINOCi

I think her point is how difficult it would be to play Tubular Bells on a single guitar. She seems amazed and talks about how he can make the guitar sound like an orchestra, or as Mike puts it: "a walking orchestra". She then wonders if its possible to play Tubular Bells (on guitar). He replies by playing the intro part, which was NOT played on guitar on the album. Shes amazed again and says "oh, how beatiful".

    Nothing wrong or stupid here.

Great playing from Mike as always.

  • @iCONICAACINOCi Hahah, what did she expect him to answer? "Uhm.. no... what song? Tubular Bells? Never heard of..."

  • @iCONICAACINOCi it's called a joke...stop being so serious :)

  • Le meilleur !

  • Comment removed

  • You are completely right. He doesn't realize the way he comes across I suspect.

  • Who is the person next to Oldfield

  • I still remember seeing this at the time! My, what a numpty that bloke truly was!

Mr Oldfield still one of the greatest and most versatile guitarists. This just reminds me what a great album Amorok is.

  • 0:51 rocks.

  • dont forget Steve Vai!

  • She looks just a bit charmed... :)

  • she is definitely one of the girls you can charm with music!;-)

  • yes, amazing... acoustic guitar but so many sounds - because Mike Oldfield playing. Fantastic and incredible for all time he is. Still one of my favourite artists. (sorry for all word bugs, no dictionary in hand and empty in head :)

  • "There's living proof you don't just push buttons, cause that what's you're accussed of, for being sort of electronic wizzard..." This woman is so annoying.

  • apologies. i have just hit the wrong thumb. should have been a positive. i shall change it tomorrow!

  • one of fave clips of mike. raw and powerful and surrounded by fools.

  • No joke! He's being all incredible and amazing and those idiots are asking all manners of inane questions (my fave being 'is that an acoustic guitar?' but I liked the gesture Mike made, lol)

  • @ClaudeWaiter so funny how he respnds to their questions!! ;)

  • @chefchrism yes he has this kind of look of . you are an idiot. haha

  • @ClaudeWaiter LOL!!!!

  • 5***** :)))

  • An entranced Anne Diamond - and rightly so.

  • Ah, I love Mike's laid back attitude :P

I mean the interviewers aren't all there are they? I mean with comments like "This is acoustic guitar isn't it?" and "You can't still play tubular bells can you?" and "By the way, if you break a thumbnail..." Come on! This is Mike Oldfield the music legend you're talking to!!! :P

  • Just amazing. I'm sure Mike could perform the whole "Tubular Bells" - album only on his acoustic guitar and it would sound marvellous. Thanks for posting this.

  • hahahahha 0:0-03 hahahhahahaha Mike:-))0

  • Gotta love the poster of this video and Youtube for unearthing these things from the past... Great to see Mike Oldfield, but good grief, what a pain it must have been for him..."can you still play tubular bells?", what stupid comments and questions... the only proper ending for this performance would be him smashing the guitar on the hosts! christ!

  • love his attitude! he almost makes the others look like idiots! he doesn't say much with words, but with his guitar.. ouch.

  • Hahaha! MO not happy at all. Shame really as if he had been interviewed by people who knew the first thing about music (as opposed to a pair of tossers), the rest of us might have learnt something.

  • Genius

  • mike oldfield is a musical genius!

  • Nicely Done !

  • Bloody hell Mike that was hard work...loved the attitude :)

  • Jetzt nochmal nen konzert von ihm mit all den guten liedern wie Crime of passion, Shadow on the wall, Tricks of the Light, Discovery, Poison Arrows, Innocent und all den anderen guten Liedern.

Das wäre doch toll oder ??

  • Mike Oldfield - GENIUS! Mike Morris and Anne Diamond - IGNORANT BUFFOONS!

  • Gotta agree with you there.

  • Mike must have been "pregnant" with Amarok a long time as this video is from 1987, 3 years ahead of Amarok.

Fantastic performance from the best guitarist in the world.

  • There are actually parts of Amarok on his and Sally Oldfield's Sallyangie from the early 70's. He was only 16 I think?

  • Which tracks do the Amarok bits show up on? I'd like to check that out.

  • Amarok is one long song (60 min). At 39:14 you have a really great acoustic lick for example which he plays here at 1:13 ~.

  • I was asking where the Amarok bits show up in the Sallyangie, which was recorded almost 20 years earlier.

  • Hm, what Mike Oldfield did with the guitar was fantastic. But not only Mike Oldfield is a fantastic guitarist, also Richie Sambora or Eric Clapton. Everybody of his kind.

  • Mike you are great!

  • "You can hear the orchestration in that." Why say something stupid like that? Just thank the man for gracing you with his presence.

Also, I gotta get my lady a sweater like the one that anchorwoman is sporting!

  • Is she not correct?

  • wow!!

saw this on breakfast tv when it was broadcast in 85/86..not sure exactly

love the ending of taurus3 which made it onto Amarok album...credited in liner notes as TV-am

pure genius and one of the great under-rated guitarists

  • Mike is my hero and my favourite guitarist with Reinhardt, Hendrix, Iommi and Clapton. Why is he so underrated? He's a fucking genius!!!

  • Surtsi, perhaps it's because he avoids the big guitar gettogethers like Crossroads. I agree, he should be up there with the favourite guitar players!

  • The perfect contact with the guitar.

    Long life, Mike!

  • Musical genius right before your very eyes, shame the same can't be said for those two absolute 'tards with their amazing presenting skills...NOT lol. You can tell Mike (not Mike Morris) was thinking "god who are these thick bastards" ha ha. "that's an acoustic guitar isn't it" erm, no, it's a fookin snare drum mate....Jeyysssuusssss wept lol. I love the way Mike takes no crap though "well you people have been doing it for a while here haven't you". Brilliant. Thanks for this :)

  • he brought out a great acoustic album

  • I play guitar and that sound is a sound makes by a little touch on the chords of the guitar

  • How does Mike Oldfield create the different sounds from the guitar, from 0:51 - 0:59, then 0:59 - 1:08.

  • He's muting the strings lightly with the palm of his strumming hand.

  • 0:51 to 1:08 is cool.

  • i like the tremolo effect from the bad video

    ahahah

    thanks for sharing :)

  • How old is this?

  • What an amazing display of pure talent, forget the idiots that Simon Cowell comments on, Mike Oldfield is pre natural talent, fantastic.

  • "you cant still play tubular bells can you?" lmao silly woman.. .what do you think.... XD

  • Bloody hell lady you're a moron. So's the other idiot.. is that an acoustic guitar?

    IDIOTS !!

How excruciating that must have been for Mike. His face says it all.

Just love his reply mate... a walking orchestra.

  • The interviewers, Diamond and thingy (cant recall his name) do leave you pulling your hair out lol.

Wish MO would do more stuff in britain. A revisit to Hergest Ridge would be brilliant... for me anyway since i don't live too far off ;0)

  • Lady "you can hear the orchestration..."

    Mike "Can you???"

    Freaking awesome XD

  • lmao yeah... like hes thinking... "news to me...." lmao XD

  • he messes up at 1:32 for a sec

  • those people are too stupid to even understand what they are listening to

  • And What song is 1:13?

    It is beautiful

  • That bit is at 39:15 in Amarok

  • The parts he plays from Amarok; where are they(timewise) in the song Amarok?; i'd like to hear the original

  • amazing

  • perfect...

  • at 3:00 "why don't you use..himm... the ordinary ..sort of" even the inerviewer doesn't know what pick is... poor mike oldfield, he had to spend his morning with these people and answer.

  • "You sort of write like you're an orchestra, don't you". Oh Anne, Anne, please just be quiet for all our sakes LOL.

  • the stupid bastards interviewing him are clueless

  • hmm, is that an acoustic guitar?

  • No, it's a clarinet.

  • And I thought nothing could make me smile more than listening to Mike's music ;]

  • wat was his last album ? sorta lost track since his singles albums!

  • mots

  • IS that an acoustic guitar?? the guy belows right, they dont have a clue. Jeez mike oldfield is amzing, its always a priveledge seing him like this, woowee wata legend lol

  • The pair of them (Anne Diamond, and that guy with the tash)are totally ignorant to the mans music.

I totally agree with the last commeht that his music will be remembered in hundreds of years to come.

His new album is amazing by the way, and if anyone isnt into classical music, his latest record will certainly change your mind.

  • the interviewers are a pair of insipid twats. Poor Mike. In 200 years, people will be talking about Mike Oldfield in the way we talk about Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, et al.

  • Immortal

  • i recently purchased earth moving and i think it is realy good and the lyrics i like too. i play it all the time at the moment, are the 2 albums he plays from here done on acoustic instruments like this? in this style i mean

  • Yeah, Amarok used basically no Synths at all.. Its fantastically done, but very very odd.. Crises (where taurus iii is from) is a wonderful mix of the two, but using more live acoustic instruments.

  • i think mike oldfield is in fact, the greatest musician that ever lived, because he mastered so many instruments. the guitar the greatest ever hands down.i wish mike would have a concert in the US someday,we're waiting for you mike.

  • Amazing how he copes with such dumb "interview"- questions ... He's got more going on in his fingers than they have in both brains put together.

He is as a very good guitar-player. Needless to say how much I appreciate all his other work.

PS. I couldn't help wondering what it was that he kept inside his guitar - but it made itself wanting to be heard ... :o)

  • I can't say he is guitar God - i will hurt David Gilmour. So Mike is multinstrumental God :)

  • Amen to that.

  • amazing playing

its brutal that he play the guitar as he'd play a piano

  • Hes so cool and amazing.

  • WOW!

  • This is horrible. I mean the video is great but it pains me a great deal to see him this uncomfortable.

    //H from Sweden

  • Mike is truly a musical God. I have remote links with him but still put his music on top of the rest of the musicians, but not in a biased way. Mike has been my favourite since childhood. So what if he seems insecure. Its that quality that has brought out his music I think. For example, autistic people have a huge talent somewhere. They are just different and to speak to Mike he doesn't come across as insecure.

  • I have been a fan of Mike's music for years. I agree that he seems to have a verbal communication problem/social shyness or something which makes him sound a lot less intelligent/complex than he is, and insecure - his real way of talking is through music, and I believe his comm. problems led him to find a voice through music to express feelings he cannot in other ways - and what a voice !

  • I don't think that it's necessarily social shyness. I think that it's modesty because he don't need to boast or even share his talent with anyone in order to know that he is an extraordinary musician. He reminds me of Peter Gabriel in that way- they both love a show but they are essentially private, wise people.

  • Maybe he's a bit weird, but one of the most talented musician.

  • fantastic... when she asks him to play tubular bells, she didnt think it was coming

  • This interview is like watching 'Alan Partridge' i'm sure Steve Coogan based the Partridge character on all these inept 1980s breakfast show hosts.

Mike Oldfield looks really awkward, he had already pre-warned them not to expect too much banter i bet he cringes watching this.

    Excellent musician very strange man.

  • is he like antisocial or something he seemed a bit weird.

  • most artists are ... where are you been livin?!?!?

  • anne diamond cant believe her eyes. its a shame they dont do interviews like this anymore. you dont get many musicians just jamming on the couch. awesome job mike

  • Very interesting recording, I grew up with the music of Mike Oldfield somehow: QE2, Platinum, Expose and all that stuff.
