  • been there since the start, and still one of my favs of all time

    beautiful song

  • everlasting

  • Lol at the comments...

  • this is musical perfection loke sgt peppers beethoven its in that league new order from 81-87 were on another planet

  • I think we get it: Good music is good music is good music, regardless of how young or old a person is. I don't think it's really something to crow about if you're a sixteen year old who loves this song, because...well...it's just that good that it shouldn't be special that you're a certain age, I'd think.

For the record, I'm eighteen and think this song is the greatest thing since sliced bread. That, or a lot of New Order's other stuff.

  • @93redballoons Right on brah

  • @93redballoons young people will always seek out great music from hendrix to house music breakbeats this is a b-side to a song called hurt the b-sides are amazing MESH IS ANOTHER GREAT 81 TRACK

  • When they were at their very best indeed ...

  • Epic early New Order. Not anymore Joy Division, not yet the poppy N.O. to come. My favorite period of theirs.

  • There is no end to this I can't turn away Another picture but the scene It's still the same There is no room to move Or try to look away Remember, life is strange Life keeps getting stranger every day A mass of harmless attitudes A type that won't subside No matter what they say You knew your heart beats you late at night Your heart beats you late at night Your heart beats you late at night
  • There is no end to this I have seen your face But I don't recognize all these things You must have kept behind It's a problem, you know That's been there all your life I try to make you see the world without you That just turned black and white At night it gets cold and You'd dearly like to turn away An escape that fails Makes the wounds that time won't heal alone Alone, alone, alone.
  • just before they turned into synth crap muzak

  • for me this new order song definitely marked the new beginning. the song is upbeat, in my mind, modern and pop. it cast off the shadow of joy division because it had to and unlike so many before and after it went its own, completely different way into the new. i think it has to do with pure northern stubbornness and independence. the guts to say goodbye to the old and not look back. of course, a decade or so later it would look different.

  • Great bassline

  • There's something very Salford about this track.

I know,I was born and bred Salford 7.

  • the best song of any genre at any time! period!

  • songs like this are what inspire people to make music, This whole joy division New order thing just blows me away

  • Is this where the big knobs hang out ?

  • what came first, this tune or Clockwork Orange..?

  • @MG3AEH Clockwork Orange broke the mold with its use of Moog synthesizer byt a famous tranny composer, Wendy Carlos I believe. However, in 1981, use of such synthesizer in discordance was rare.

  • @MG3AEH Clockwork Orange broke the mold with its use of Moog synthesizer byt a famous tranny composer, Wendy Carlos I believe. However, in 1981, use of such synthesizer in discordance was rare. Clockwork was 1971, showing the late 20th century in the future. (the calendar blocks out the last two numbers after 19--.

  • It's a problem, you know.

  • so..... THIS IS WHERE THE BIG STARS HANG OUT

  • an absolute minter

  • Can't believe I've missed this song all these years, it's absolutely AWESOME!!

  • Just amazing.

  • rather poor mix..... vocal is pretty buried.

  • possibly the greatest new order song ever in my humble opinion

  • Fucking awesome track has that joy division/new order cross over that hits you right between the eyes...like a diamond tipped bullet ; )

  • The intro sounds like it was inspired by Genesis's "Watcher of the Skies", only much much better. One of NO's very best, but doesn't seem to get the recognition it deserves.

  • top vid

  • You can dance this song with no move

  • サカナクションはかっこいいのでぜひ聞いてください。

  • I can't believe that I had the audacity to call myself a huge New Order fan for five years without having heard this song...

  • @kurdt1000 I's never too late, but I understand what you mean. I discovered New Order in the 90's. I don't know how I was able to survive till that moment

  • I wish that i could have been born to this song

  • Do you remember lying on your bed listening to this beautiful thing and being just blown away?

    Do kids still do that?

  • @MrMoufflon Yes!! And no.

  • @MrMoufflon

    I just finished doing it.

  • @MrMoufflon yes, they do!

  • @MrMoufflon Some of us do, but the headphones make the ritual unnecessary. The music that most teenagers listen to is "disposable" anyway; it's meant to be heard, not listened to.

  • @MrMoufflon I do and im 16

  • @MrMoufflon all the time baby

  • @MrMoufflon Yes -.-

  • jeez, why do nerds keep going on about which song they are gonna have at their funeral. Get a life ( literally!)

  • @hufclufc s t f u

  • such a beautiful song, i always listen to this song while im jogging over the motorway at dusk, i cant explain how it feels

  • @stjf1997 i know how you feel !!!! its fantastic music thats why

  • Did anyone else see them at The Plaza at Eglinton Toll, end of January 1981? I think it was only there second ever gig.

  • luv it...........................

  • If you liked this song, try to find Electronic Renaissance of Belle & Sebastian, pretty much similar = O

  • @palmax256 funny thing, I was actually listening to electric renaissance the other day and realized this same thing and here i am

  • @stevenas135 Hehehe, cool = )

  • @palmax256 Yeah, I agree.

  • this their best song. ever. heard it first time when i was 14 and now i'm 41 and it still drives me mental.

  • this is their best song... ever. still drives me nuts - heard it the first time when i was 14 and now i'm 41.

  • One of the most cosmic songs, like, ever. The synths, the bassline and the drum fills along with Barney's vocals add up to a beautiful perfection.

  • @MagicAlex It is pretty fucking harmonious.

  • @MagicAlex Cosmic is a great description!! Check out Windy and Carl if you like that casmic feel.

  • This is there best. Many that are very close, but this base line couldn't be any better. A tighter sound then Gang of Four. So many of their music sends me back to the 80s. Spiked hair, Doc Martins, long black trench with maybe some eye liner. We kicked it in Chicago...... You couldn't ask for better venues to hear this music. The old Exit, Smart Bar, 950, NEO and Obanions, Riviera, is all we needed. It was us against the world. Thanks for the memories!

  • Listen to this, then listen to Electronic Renaissance by Belle and Sebastian...hmmm?

  • living it right now!!!!!!!!!!! you fucks :)

  • Always has been and always will be my favorite New Order song :-)

  • So much going on in this song. I love it.

  • How is this not one of their more popular works? It's by far their most enthusiastic song.

  • thats some fucked up lyrics right der

  • '' lesbians'' comfused'''', GET OFF YOUSELF, U WILL GO AFTER PUSSY AFTER NO DICK WANTS YA!!, your only turn on is==u have pussyy to fall back on!utter tahan that only one word 'MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO''''''''''''''''''', pussy is cheaper than keepin A DICK AROUND.,,, IN THE 'SHORT' run!

  • I completely forgot about factus ....thanks for the reminder

  • I can hear this song over &over again

    great one! tnx !

  • I love this track......I cant remember is it off movement or just Factus 8 vinyl?....New Order is starting to move away from JD.

  • @noveltyme procession appears on the EP Factus 8, 1987 compilation Substance, Movement 2008 collector's edition and as a single with Everything goes green

  • Poppy or not, I think New Order's prime of 1983-87 was special. They did their share of great stuff from 80-83 and 88-01 but starting with Technique began becoming more soft and the lyrics became a lot less interesting. Still, Republic is good and Get Ready borders on great. Waiting for the Sirens Jets wasn't a very good final hurrah though.

  • The most beautifully depressing song I have ever heard.

  • ?deadbeat summer Neon Indian?

  • Nine thirty a.m. on a Greyhound bus going to Montreal in early spring

  • Brilliant single.Full stop.Nobody records music with such true and deep emotion like this anymore.

  • Grande New Order ^^

    ai ai ai...

  • One of New Order's truly great songs and it's interesting so many people are aware of and like it so much, given that it didn't chart very highly in the UK and wasn't on any of their original LPs - I've enjoyed it for nearly 30 years and don't remember others I've met mentioning it - must know the wrong people. Haunting to the point of being scary and I've often had the line "Remember life is strange, life is getting stranger every day" going through my head - sure is.

  • od kilkunastu lat słucham procession ,perfect .perfect.pefect

  • Your heart beats you day at night? Anyone care to elaborate?

  • @mef1975, oh, LATE at night. That makes more sense.

  • alone , alone , alone ,.,.,.

  • where is Gillian's vocal on this track? I cannot hear it.

  • starts at about 2:30

  • no, no, I lied. it's more like 2:48.

I wasn't even looking the first time :P

  • @Teasle586

you can hear female vocals clearly on: "your heart beats you... late at night" - tho i always thought they were saying "your happy tune... day & nite"

  • yeah, depression!!!! you fucks this is new order!!

no offense! greatings to all listerners!!!!!!

  • I like this band..

    their sound is so good.

  • This is such an amazing song-I've loved it since it first came out in ?1981. Listen to Hooky's bass, which he plays like a lead guitar & Steve Morris playing the drums like a musical instrument, intricate percussion patterns that prove he's the best drummer in the world since Keith Moon died. This was the B side of the 7 inch single 'Everything's Gone Green', but it's so much better! The 12" version had 2 other songs: 'Mesh' & 'Cries & Whispers' - both AMAZING & years ahead of their time.

  • @GerryTeekman Genius song!!! - dark AND uplifting. Angry AND joyous.... takes a clever band to do that. Many have tried, but only a few have come close to New Order and Joy Division.

  • what a belter for a b-side love it

  • @fuzzbuzzuk Thought it was the A side or was it a 'double A' . ( nerdy fact : Radio 1 played this song on the chart show when the record briefly went into the Top 40 )

  • who gives a fuck, listen to that hookie bassline, morris' drums..i love it..i never get depressedlistening to JD or NO, this song is well uplifting.

  • It's the essence of NO then, dance and melancholy in one. Right into the heart. Brilliant song.

  • I like this song and listen to it, but does anyone else feel a deep sense of depression in this song?

  • lyrically its downbeat, but musically its uplifting, full of energy

  • Must be my brain chemistry. This song is completely depressing for me.

Don't get me wrong, I like it.

  • Immense !! Let your head bounce !!!!

  • this is the song that made me a fan!

  • Its timeless. This is when they became New Order. Right here.

  • People always talk about "Blue Monday" and many other hits by New Order, and really they all are great songs, but New Order have a lot of underrated themes. "Procession" is one of those, and the same happens with "Leave me alone" which has one of the Greatest Guitar Riffs in the History of Creation

  • Fucking great song. Impossible to listen to with a low volume. And impossible to listen to only one time. Every time I listen to this song I do it 7 times at least

  • I do the exact same thing, I think there's just so much emotion stuffed into this track you could never absorb it all in one go.

  • I agree with chikito72... however i press the "Repeat" button on my CD player.... what a tune !!!

  • @chikito72 Agreed I feel the same way about Leave Me Alone also. 7 times minimum!

  • @chikito72 AGREEEEEED!

  • this was always a good song, one of my favorites...takes me back pretty far since i haven't heard it in so long.

  • yes mopbrush, that would be epic!!!!!i will be buried to this too!!!!

  • One of the greatest songs ever.

  • i will be buried to this song.

  • @mopbrush sounds fucking amazing, I want to be buried to "Motion Picture Soundtrack" by Radiohead, But I think that "The Eternal would be almost as good."

  • this is easily my favorite New Order song. It's utterly beautiful and fantastic.

  • new order are f..kin the dogs bollocks forever !!xxx

  • Does that mean you like them boardy?

  • Nothing gets a Friday off to a finer start than this!!

  • you said it!!

  • Awesome tune, up the volume!!!!!!!!!

  • belle & sebastian totally ripped off this song when they recorded "electronic renaissance."

  • tsartodd,

you are right...and what's even funnier, is after belle & sebastian ripped this groove off to make "electronic rennasaince", Au Revore Simone then ripped off "electronic rennasaince" to make "Knight Of Wands"...it's like a continuation of ripping off this dope groove.

  • What is the name of the song with the lyrics that go,

"Below the surface, this day I need it light .

Beside the virtue, lies another secret place.

Thoughts out of reach, we never speak, we never compromise.

As they turn to go, the edges froze, and seem to turn to ice.

All flight departures, assembled, not returned.

Left in these passions, I look for other words.

There's hope, you've heard, there's life in other worlds.

Sometimes, we'll find, that truth is never kind...etc"

  • The song you refer to is called "Mesh",

but you got the lyrics kinda mesh jejej

    take care man.

  • No man, "Below the surface" is Cries and Wispers.

NEW order misplaced for many yeras Mesh and Cries. Only recently when they did it again in the remasters, fans complained and it was fixed.

    Steven himself said it...

  • Ok then, it is the cut that incorrectly appears on the double CD Substance as "Mesh" when it should of been titled "Cries And Whispers" - it was a mistake from the record company or God knows who - where as in the cassette format the original "Mesh" actually is included and it appears as "Cries And whispers"...

  • so is all a big mess. However I've come to refer to the song Cries and Whispers as Mesh because that's the double Cd I own. And the lyrics bishop is asking for belong to Cries And Whispers, but if he happens to look for a the song he will certainly find it as Mesh.

  • the original vinyl has "cries & whispers"

  • See my comment posted above about 'Mesh' & 'Cries & Whispers'

  • @bishop42962 that is Procession.

  • Great song ! Not a huge N.O. fan but the early (first two) albums were dark, even heavy on some levels. They kind of went in to the shitter after that.

  • agree 100%..first few singles and albums 1 and 2 awesome...then they went E-beeth-a on us..

Pity..had they continued their earlier sound, they would be called RockGods today, instead we have Radiohead to wear that mantle..

that said, they had pretty cool Pop tunes later on..

  • I really love these older tracks, the Ceremony through Temptation era is just awesome.

  • Aye, after Movement only a few songs took my fancy, it went pishy and pop-y!

  • Come on, you can't say you don't like some of the later stuff! What about Bizarre Love Triangle, The Perfect Kiss, Crystal, Regret, etc..

A personal favourite of mine is 'All Day Long' from Brotherhood. And if you can call Elegia from Low-Life pishy pop-y then your out of your mind.

Not that the early stuff isn't good though. This is a great track and I also absolutely love Leave Me Alone of Power, Corruption & Lies, simply stunning track.

  • Along with "In a Lonely Place", this is truly their greatest song.

  • Absolutely. Another song that gets me every time is "Lonesome Tonight".

  • Irgend wann in den 80gern bei peel`s gehört. jetzt endlich gefunden, danke internet, danke youtube. ein riesen song.

  • i always loved this song but when i read the lyrics my jaw just dropped. its obviously all about remembering ian, both his beauty and his suffering. the line "your heart beats you . . . late at night" is one of the most beautiful and tortured lines i've ever heard -- in music or in literature. truly inspired.

  • Nearly thirty years on and it still gives me goosebumps and it still makes me sad. Godlike.

  • That synthisizer in the beggining of the song gives me gossebumps.

  • Probably their best track.

  • Great song.

  • Comment removed

  • Agree. Their best song, easily.

  • best thing they've ever done

  • reminds me of joy division

  • Yeah, early New Order (1981ish is really close to the stuff on 'Closer.'

  • this is SUCH A GOOD SONG!!!! I love New Order but i hadn't heard this song. AAAAH!

  • I still say JD/New Order sounded more modern back then than we do even now. Powerful stuff

  • The end of Joy Division's post punk sound and the birth of New Order...I LOOOVVVEEE THIS TRACK!

  • Oh man, this song is soooo good! Brings back good memories of my teens :)

  • this song always brings back memories of something, somewhere and i don't know why because i first heard this a few months ago.
