I never dance, I can't I don't like and I don't want, but everytime I listen to this song some parts of my body start to move. And there's nothing I can do
I think we get it: Good music is good music is good music, regardless of how young or old a person is. I don't think it's really something to crow about if you're a sixteen year old who loves this song, because...well...it's just that good that it shouldn't be special that you're a certain age, I'd think.
For the record, I'm eighteen and think this song is the greatest thing since sliced bread. That, or a lot of New Order's other stuff.
@93redballoons young people will always seek out great music from hendrix to house music breakbeats this is a b-side to a song called hurt the b-sides are amazing MESH IS ANOTHER GREAT 81 TRACK
There is no end to this I can't turn away Another picture but the scene It's still the same There is no room to move Or try to look away Remember, life is strange Life keeps getting stranger every day A mass of harmless attitudes A type that won't subside No matter what they say You knew your heart beats you late at night Your heart beats you late at night Your heart beats you late at night
There is no end to this I have seen your face But I don't recognize all these things You must have kept behind It's a problem, you know That's been there all your life I try to make you see the world without you That just turned black and white At night it gets cold and You'd dearly like to turn away An escape that fails Makes the wounds that time won't heal alone Alone, alone, alone.
There is no end to this I have seen your face But I don't recognize all these things You must have kept behind It's a problem, you know That's been there all your life I try to make you see the world without you That just turned black and white At night it gets cold and You'd dearly like to turn away An escape that fails Makes the wounds that time won't heal alone Alone, alone, alone.
for me this new order song definitely marked the new beginning. the song is upbeat, in my mind, modern and pop. it cast off the shadow of joy division because it had to and unlike so many before and after it went its own, completely different way into the new. i think it has to do with pure northern stubbornness and independence. the guts to say goodbye to the old and not look back. of course, a decade or so later it would look different.

The intro sounds like it was inspired by Genesis's "Watcher of the Skies", only much much better. One of NO's very best, but doesn't seem to get the recognition it deserves.

@MrMoufflon Some of us do, but the headphones make the ritual unnecessary. The music that most teenagers listen to is "disposable" anyway; it's meant to be heard, not listened to.
This is there best. Many that are very close, but this base line couldn't be any better. A tighter sound then Gang of Four. So many of their music sends me back to the 80s. Spiked hair, Doc Martins, long black trench with maybe some eye liner. We kicked it in Chicago...... You couldn't ask for better venues to hear this music. The old Exit, Smart Bar, 950, NEO and Obanions, Riviera, is all we needed. It was us against the world. Thanks for the memories!

Poppy or not, I think New Order's prime of 1983-87 was special. They did their share of great stuff from 80-83 and 88-01 but starting with Technique began becoming more soft and the lyrics became a lot less interesting. Still, Republic is good and Get Ready borders on great. Waiting for the Sirens Jets wasn't a very good final hurrah though.
One of New Order's truly great songs and it's interesting so many people are aware of and like it so much, given that it didn't chart very highly in the UK and wasn't on any of their original LPs - I've enjoyed it for nearly 30 years and don't remember others I've met mentioning it - must know the wrong people. Haunting to the point of being scary and I've often had the line "Remember life is strange, life is getting stranger every day" going through my head - sure is.
you can hear female vocals clearly on: "your heart beats you... late at night" - tho i always thought they were saying "your happy tune... day & nite"
This is such an amazing song-I've loved it since it first came out in ?1981. Listen to Hooky's bass, which he plays like a lead guitar & Steve Morris playing the drums like a musical instrument, intricate percussion patterns that prove he's the best drummer in the world since Keith Moon died. This was the B side of the 7 inch single 'Everything's Gone Green', but it's so much better! The 12" version had 2 other songs: 'Mesh' & 'Cries & Whispers' - both AMAZING & years ahead of their time.
@GerryTeekman Genius song!!! - dark AND uplifting. Angry AND joyous.... takes a clever band to do that. Many have tried, but only a few have come close to New Order and Joy Division.
@fuzzbuzzuk Thought it was the A side or was it a 'double A' . ( nerdy fact : Radio 1 played this song on the chart show when the record briefly went into the Top 40 )

@mopbrush sounds fucking amazing, I want to be buried to "Motion Picture Soundtrack" by Radiohead, But I think that "The Eternal would be almost as good."
you are right...and what's even funnier, is after belle & sebastian ripped this groove off to make "electronic rennasaince", Au Revore Simone then ripped off "electronic rennasaince" to make "Knight Of Wands"...it's like a continuation of ripping off this dope groove.
Ok then, it is the cut that incorrectly appears on the double CD Substance as "Mesh" when it should of been titled "Cries And Whispers" - it was a mistake from the record company or God knows who - where as in the cassette format the original "Mesh" actually is included and it appears as "Cries And whispers"...

What is the name of the song with the lyrics that go,
"Below the surface, this day I need it light .
Beside the virtue, lies another secret place.
Thoughts out of reach, we never speak, we never compromise.
As they turn to go, the edges froze, and seem to turn to ice.
All flight departures, assembled, not returned.
Left in these passions, I look for other words.
There's hope, you've heard, there's life in other worlds.
Sometimes, we'll find, that truth is never kind...etc"
