Nice work from 2:50 onwards when you point a loaded gun at the camera man, clean it up its people like you who shoot people on accident and give everyone else a bad name.
at last - some proper hunting - those tosspots aka waikarimoana - ross and tony dont post any negative comments - they purport to be "professional" guides - more like amatuers hunting farm deer - anyone in a whechair and ability to point a rifle could shoot - what a joke!! - s I said good to see proper free range hunting - wel done boys - good roar hunting- cheers - exculler
@exNZFS verseas hunters spend avrg.25000.00 on airfare, acomm.,food,&trophy fee. This money helps lots of familys in small towns. The hunter wants 8hours hunt breakfast, lunch, dinner, shower&warm bed. There are nearly 40 hunting stations in N.Z so millions of Dollars comes to N.Z.Thanks a lot for supporting a Kiwi venture mate and if you think you can do it better than us you should come and show us because Argentina,&Eastern Europe are taking the hunters away & don't get negative comment like yous
I use 7mm 08 (short action is good) 308 is common as they can punch through scrub. 243 I have used alot with great results on reds but it can deflect of small branches and leaves.
@NZWildThings well said wildthings.... .243 is not a calibre I would recommend for nz bush, at least not for a beginner - in saying that they are brilliant out in the open..... I use a .223 in the open, .308 in the bush (kaimanawas, ureweras) but most of the deer (fallow) I've shot have been a single shot in the ear-hole with a .22LR from anywhere upto 100 yards away :D certainly wouldn't try that on a red lol....
Just play on a deer farm, they'll be going from now on. I have a piss poor roar technique and they still come, you can just cup your hands, so don't need a horn. I find the horn just gives better volume when the stags are not close.
just a little advice with that one that was still kicking, to save you a couple of bucks just stick a knife in the chest either side inwards or just cut the throat and theres a good reason for that as it makes the meat taste alot better, you can tell when someone gives you some venison that they havent done it, well done anyway "shakes hand"
cptkirk2007, You should try carrying out a nice stag like that, its next to impossible, you take it out in parts, and if your hunting it areas like me where there it has very large population of falcons, hawks, stoats and pigs, theres no problem leaving the caucus and guts in a clearing, it will be goin in a few days.
NZWildThings, when you where talking about DOC poising them, i was recently up at one of my hunting spots, i seen 11 and pluged a full grown hind, a yearling hind and a young stag and just before i left i had a chat to one of the locals and he said if DOC finds out about the amount of deer in this area they would just fly a chopper over and 1080 the hole lot, my heart droped and all the way home i was thinking of what i could do to them if they did, somones always got to ruin others fun.
good shit bro, im 18 and just starting out, hunted the roar this year but was n't too sucessful, saw a couple tho, Hopefully il get one this year!! be good to see some more vids from the next roar from you... chur
What ! did i see that? did you just take the hind legs? There is a Rule to all NZ hunters, You can Gut and bury at a minimum of 300mm. Did you BURY the rest of your kill. ? i would say not, or you would have put that on your vidi.
Do not misunderstand me, I have to do the same thing here in Chile, but everytime I shoot a stag, female or calf (and believe me I have to do a lot of shooting) I show more respect on the animals I`m culling. Nothing fancy you know, just common sence respect. I guess diferent countrys diferent cultures.
If we don't shoot them the New Zealand government poisons them and they are wasted!! All mammals are treated as a pest here (except two tiny native bats). We are brought up in that culture.
yeah I do what your talking about sometimes. I just hang the back straps through my belt. Helps let them cool. No good if you fall down a muddy bank though.
Many hours from any river or road, so hard to carry the entire beast out. Wild red stags are 110 - 150 kg gutted so not light. There are no bag limits or tags or regulations on numbers you can take... so no point carrying shoulder meat too far, just get another set of back legs instead!
Yeah I keep missing out on getting the stag on screen properly for the shot.... guys are too keen to drop them as they are usually very close and the bush is heavy
3rd and 4th stags are beauts. Will have to get over to the West Coast for a roar by the looks of it.

you want that resinating sound you get from a horn, i found cardboard rolls work best, varnished so they dont get soggy.

I maybe going to the roar this year. Is it possible for the deer to know I'm bullshitting as I have never roared before. Is it better with a horn?
