Some people say: ''that looks like fun'', I don't think it is... Unless it's a practice the situation will have been quite alarming in the sub, as it was put on the roof like that. And if you're in a submarine that's making an emergency blow you'll probably be scared stiff because of the moaning of the hull due to pressure change and all... So: no it probably isn't ''fun''
I was lee helm and after we hit the surface and started down again the ship took a hard roll to starboard. I flew across the con and landed by the torpedo firing control board. It was like being weightless when we started to drop. We sank to right around 100 feet and then bounced back to the top. That was something I never will forget. SSBN / SSGN 641 USS Simon Bolivar
Everything thats not tied down or put away goes flying though the air. I got hit by a trash can once and didn't see it coming. Got a nice cut on my leg on the Uss George C Marshall. ssbn 654.
@TheVaxo except it isnt..... and there is no admiral on board a submarine unless he is riding the boat to do an inspection..... i was on a submarine that is not one of the reasons the emergency blow
This is something that is done to test the emergency blow system every once in a while to ensure that the system works and will get the boat to the surface quickly in the event of flooding.
I served 23 years on British Nuclear Subs and i only ever did it once and not quite so dramatic.
The engines are put to full ahead (maximum revs) the planesman pulls back on his stick and they blow the ballast tanks and up you come.
What do you do to a drunken sailor, what do you do to a drunken sailor?

Thats fun. Especially at the helm. Better than angles and dangles going down. That's a little scary.

it's like pushing a basketball under water and then letting go... now think about how it would be inside it.

looks like so much fun,but from the engine room, its a little anti climatic. Still cool to feel the boat leave the water though
