  • Nice rendition of Joplin/Marshall's little "cake-walk". I'm learning this, but on flute! I'm hoping to add in whem/if I end up going tto Sutter Creek this summer for their RagFest!

By the way, I love the tuning of this piano!

  • what kind of book do you have? most books show different notes but actually those are the correct

  • Aww~ It's such cute music x)

  • ... sympathic, that, in the end you did a cute mistake... wonderful interpretation, with a steady beat, loving it!

  • You're really good!!

  • I love this song; especially on an old piano like yours. If it isn't old, then it's a little out of tune, which is the best while playing ragtime. <3

  • good job!

    thanx to you an scott!

(what would ragtime fans do without tempo-discussions??????????)

  • Great! I'm learning this song myself! Love it!

  • This is bootifull!

  • slower!

  • Faster . .silly .lol. Tempo should be about 100. It's also in 2/4. So, as a matter of fact, it's a lil too slow. Seriously. =o)

  • it's actually perfect tempo. (i think)

  • Until I post (create a Swipesy) video. Hit up the 1st video response to get an idea of the "excitement" I'm talkin' about! =o)

  • Well, after listening it makes me want to create a Swipesy vid and post right here! All the right notes were hit, but where is the excitement?? Yeah, get ready for a "video response" soon. =o)

  • i did that when i was 6, without parts

  • I Like the fact that you think your shit don't stink! A good rendition, and I KNOW it was well played...but I don't like the fact that u don't share comments with people that like you...asshole!

  • wow, i like this rag, graeat performance

  • try not to alter the written rhythm too much, a cake walk is a specific rhythmic pattern: beat 1 is 16th 8th 16th, beat 2 is 8th 8th, over and over again. other then that, good tempo. have heard too many people play this piece way too fast. i usually play it around 70bpm. work those little technical difficulties, and youll have a good interpretation of what i consider a ragtime gem.

  • Actually lots of people like the way ragtime sounds on an out of tune piano.

  • i like it very much! only, one could play it a little slower... i like your bass-line, good to follow!

  • i like it very much! only, one could play it a little FASTER;...

  • Wow. I wish I could be a piano expert to play that music. GOOD JOB!

  • super! the piano has a great sound even though it needs a tune

  • Tocando piano!!

    el facho qliao!!

    Eris hijito de papa!!

    Viva Allende!

  • TUNE YOUR PIANO!!!! Other than that, pretty good. Keep practicing.

  • hm. i had been playing this faster. is it this slow?

  • he isn't really playing it all that slow

  • When asked at what speed one should play Swipesy, co-composer Arthur Marshall said, "As fast as you can and still hit the octaves."

The sheet music does say "Slow" on it. Professional ragtime musicians play it no slower than this performance (which is indeed slow compared to the marches and cakewalks of the time).

  • good !

    I like this song

I would save if this version is a easy version or the true version ?

  • For some of you that are making comments about the Piano ruining the sound, please understand that this piano is from an earlier era and if scott joplin had played this song himself the quality of the sound would have been probably similar to this back in the days when it was written. So really it gives it song a more authentic feel for the era this song is from.

  • That's not true at all. Hiring pianists to play was one of the ways businesses got customers in the door. It was in their best interest to keep their pianos in good shape and tuned -- and they did, by all accounts.

Unfortunately, pianos that date from the early 20th century (like my own), tend not to old tune very well anymore. You can tune 'em, but they'll go funky in a matter of days.

  • I just love Joplins on a piano that's a little out of tune.

This is one of my favourites!

  • @Ragtime85 Yes, the piano is perfect for it!

  • I stand by my comment of 4 months ago...GREAT!

  • Valiant effort! I would have polished this piece before posting. Your style is very "player piano" not "Joplinesque". Too mechanical, needs feeling. You can accomplish this by accentuating the syncopation. I know you can do it, then repost and wow us. Thanks

  • Not bad. But IMO the variations you did were worse than the original, sometimes the original "flavour" was lost...

  • Fantastic-may I ask...is that piano a Ricca & Sons (New York)?

  • wonderful!!!, don't listen to what they say, i think it was great

    keep it up!!!

  • boring...put some feeling into it

  • no emotions. just playin notes :-/ kinda boring :-///

  • Ordinarily that piano would ruin a piece, but not a Joplin, great sound!

  • The material you selected and the tone from that piano are FABULOUS. You should do more of Joplin.

  • Haha it sounds like a saloon piano. :P Which actually really works well with Joplin.

  • Wow, you're loved

  • Nice old piano! sounds very good. We used to have an old one but my mum gave it to my grand dad and now we havce a new one, it has alot better sound quality but just isnt the same if you knwo what I mean ;)

    Nice work!

  • Scott Joplin #1 baby!!! For an amatuer, that was fantastic. I counted about 12 errors not including the debacle at the end, but that was still very good and much better than I could perform.

  • try adding some soul to the piece, as of right now you're just playing notes and not making music

  • special in theme, but it seems that your piano needs tuning right now. The pitches are sometime inaccurate, you know what i meant, :)

  • actually, the piano not being in tune creates a very authentic ragtime sound for the pianos in the saloons and bordellos were not regularly tuned

  • really?

  • No, not really. Having a pianist was a way for these business to attract customers (besides the "goods" themselves), therefore it was in their best interest to keep them tuned. The whole out-of-tune ragtime piano thing seems to be an invention of the 1950s.

  • APPROVED BY THE ANGEL OF MUSIC

  • I love it! =D

  • Tune your piano please. Damn man. IOt would make ur playing sound so much better

  • VERY NICE. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PLAY PIANO? I HAVE

ALWAYS LOVED THE SCOTT JOPLIN MUSIC. HOPE YOU WILL

DO SOME MORE. DON'T KNOW IF YOU HAVE SEEN THEM, BUT

MIKE WILLITT (SPELLING) HAS SOME GOOD PIANO MUSIC ON

YOU TUBE ALSO. THANKS FOR THE FUN,bw

  • Great!. You remembered me Eric Rogers. I have uploaded my short arrangement of the Swipesy (for guitar). I hope to complete it soon.

  • wowee pretty freakin awesome!!! i have yet to learn this one!!

  • now thats what i love to hear! great job!

  • What advice do you have for learning this piece? I am learning it for a ragtime competition. Thanks!!

  • i would definitely focus on keeping the beat steady. the nice thing about ragtime is that it all matches up somewhere, not like chopin pieces. use the left hand as a way to steady the beat.

Good luck, and let me know how it turns out!

  • he's just stomping to the beat.

nice left hand playing. i'm learning this piece too and the left hand is killing me. >_<

  • what pedal are you clicking with your left?

or is it keeping some weird beat?

  • i am just keeping the beat, it really helps

  • Wow this is reeeeeally nice!

  • Boy that piano could use a good tuning, the pitch is too low

  • I haven't heard that one before and really like it. I thought your performance was really controlled. Ragtime can sound a mess if you don't keep in time. It also wasn't played too fast - brilliant!

  • Pretty damn good! Thanks!
