Now even at my own level, I give him little chance to run a 5/10 marathon, and I would even challenge him in the long and high Jump.... Enough of those greatest blahblaha, he is an amazing if not the most amazing swimmer off all time, but that is all

He probably is the best athlete in any sport, simply because he's dominated his field to such an extent. In some events he'll just dominate, and take things to amazing levels, then the next minute he's out of his comfort zone racing a whole different bunch of swimmers in the sprints and wins the tight ones. In other sports there is regular debate about who the greatest ever is; whereas in swimming, for anyone who know the world of elite swimming, Phelps had ended the debate (to this point).

Right right because there are better athletes right? WRONG. Hes fcking amazing at one sport, but then so are all the other great athletes. You dont see usain bolt making the olympic team in swimming, or Kobe in soccer. He won more Olympic gold medals than anyone ever. How can you not think that hes the best athlete? lol that dude is not the best athlete in the world, he is the best swimmer though. I bet the only sport Phelps is good at is swimming. That makes him the best swimmer not overall athlete. He even said when he tried other sports he was too uncoordinated.

@cmoney1928 , i would like to see you train for 8 Olympic events....................Have swum the 400IM and 200 butterfly? you have no idea what it takes to swim 8 events in a week plus heats and relays,etc. Im a swimmer myself and swimming could be as demanding as it gets.........I don't know if phelps is the best athlete out there but he's right up there along with Bolt, etc.

That's exactly my point, it's physically impossible to run 17 races(marathons anyway)in 13 days. You could maybe run 17 sprints but no contest would expect that of a runner they're bound to get hurt. Swimming 17 races? No problem. It just isn't as physically demanding. You HAVE to breathe when you run, there is a greater demand on the muscles. Sprinting is an anaerobic(no oxygen)activity, the race is over in seconds. Technically sprinters don't get to "breathe" either.

try racing against people from all over the world, rather than a few select countries that have the equipment/facilities for swimming. not one african even competed

Greatest athlete ever is a stretch, all he does well is swim. The decathletes or heptathletes are the only ones who deserve that title as they do a variety of disciplines. Running is way more rigorous and requires way more athletisism. As far as I'm concerned Usain Bolt has way more endurance and is stronger than Phelps, no question. Remember the olympic creed: higher, faster, stronger. Between the two: the lightning Bolt is the better athlete and I still wouldn't call him the greatest Olympian.

@prince2ice Yep, fully agree, but I am not sure about Bolt endurance, he is a sprinter and is very tall, it is actually amazing he made it to ths level whith such height.

I'd agree he's a fantastic athlete to actually win that many olympic gold medals, but I believe that Ussain Bolt should take the top spot since he broke world records for every race and athletics is so much more competitive than Swimming :D All the same, phelps is still good.
