This reminds me of Autechre, Tangerine Dream, Boards of Canada, and others...I really like it, since I like all of those mentioned. I love the way RB works keyboards and synths...!
Wow, this is good. I never realized it before now, but I think Richard Barbieri's work in Porcupine Tree is one of the things that really make me like the band. I always figured Steven Wilson created most of the electronic sounds in the background, but clearly Richard has added a lot to the sound.
It's allmost unbelievable, that he began his carrier with his boy band 'Japan'. His talent cannot be overlooked when we watch their video at that time in the 70's. This ist the same to the other members of 'Japan'. The musicians of 'Japan' are now all highly professional and just brilliant.
When i heard this and Light on Glass on Youtube i immediately ordered 'Things Buried' and 'Stranger Inside'. I think from a guy that created the acoustic synthesised feel of the great 'Tin Drum' album by Japan and the many people he influenced as a result of, that it is great to hear that he himself is open to those he infleunced i.e Autechre, Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada etc and interpret, develop and be infleunced to the same degree as to produce such work as fantastic as these 2 cd's.
Barbieri is so fucking cool. I saw Porcupine Tree live a couple of days ago, it was fantastic, but when Steve started presenting the band (at the gig's closing) when he mentioned Barbieri, he rose some wine cup and made some wicked noises with his machines. Fucking cool, it was!
Richard was interviewed in Keyboard Magazine a year and a few months ago (Feb '08 I think), and he mentioned that his new album was geared more mainly toward synth/keyboard folks and audiophiles.
I agree with h4xOy in that it does offer alot to any music fan, electronic or not.
Hey, this is the video for me, I'm on 12 different medications! (4 of them psych meds)

This is the song from the beginning of the "Arriving Somewhere" DVD, I take it? Albeit in a different arrangement....

Barbieri is certainly underrated. He's absolutely brilliant, whether solo or in PT.

Things Buried and especially Stranger Inside, are just two must have albums, no matter what kind of music you listen to.
