Another reason soviets were okay with a modest material existence is that they knew in the Soviet Union that all the people were sharing in the wealth of the society generally, which is a worthy reason to accept a little less for yourself. Unlike in capitalism, where many people live uncertainly and poorly with no real promise of change.
