  • I really am befuddled at Converge and Cave In being called 'metalcore' in some comments. Metalcore is reserved for shit music. Use the label accordingly. There is no semblance to metalcore in Converge's music anyway lol.

  • @TheStinkfister Are you kidding me? Cave In and Converge are pioneers of metalcore. Just because modern metalcore bands have tarnished the name of the genre, doesn't make these guys any less metalcore. "Metalcore" simply means mixing metal and hardcore, which is exactly what this is. Botch, Dillinger, Cave In, Converge - all great metalcore bands. You don't have to disown the genre as a whole just because modern acts turned it to shit.

  • @davethehostage Subgenres are differentiated in definition region to region I guess. Metalcore as I know it are bands that alternate crap, sing-songy metal with hardcore, growly voiced metal. All That Remains, Killswitch Engage, etc. Converge is strictly hardcore. Cave In is too fucking good to label at all, honestly. You have to admit, metalcore has become a negative word in the last few years. If I am totally off base, I accept that, but the state of metalcore today=awful.

  • @TheStinkfister Oh, I don't deny that "metalcore" has become a bad word as of late. 90% of the time, you'd be right to label a metalcore band as unlistenable garbage.

Converge have on various occasions referred to themselves as "metallic hardcore" - which is really just splitting hairs. And while Cave In have indeed gone through many different phases, this album is undoubtedly a metalcore landmark.Bands like these set the scene for what those trendy kids would eventually ruin.

  • @davethehostage Common ground successfully achieved, I %100 agree.

  • @TheStinkfister Huzzah! Take note, rest of Internet.

  • As I Lay Dying suck balls friend

  • one of the few metalcore bands that are able to incorporate melodic elements without it sounding likea sort of cynical cherry picking of whatever is popular (see: devil wears prada, attack attack, etc)

  • botch shits on this.

  • @blotchy67 Why even compare the two bands?

  • All that "I wish the hadn't changed" noise is for simpletons. I hear it said about so many amazing, usually genre destroying/defining bands. Artists grow. If they did it all for the "fans" they would be The Wiggles.

...also, what @phuckingemailmehere said. For real.

  • they switched styles cos they fuckin dominated with this album and crossbearer........way ahead of their time.

  • I think Cave In could of done some really awesome things with the Metalcore genre had they not abandoned it after this album. I mean such an abrupt change in sound put many off, myself included. I know we'll never get a true follow up to this album, but at least we (the fans of old school Cave ) still have this and, to a lesser extent, Beyond Hypothermia.

  • @GoongalaGoongala

Nah, they'll never be Starkweather. But they did a fair go at it, still came out a little popish like Poison the Well. White Silence totally sounds Converge's Jane Doe style Metalcore though.

  • First listened to this album back in 2003, still one of my favorites ever.

  • This is when cave in was good.

  • @MrHorror33 You insulting Jupiter and Antenna, boy?

  • I have a CD that is labeled 'Cave In: Until Your Heart Stops' but when you play it, it's actually Botch's "American Nervoso"!! I've never been able to explain that.

  • @ArchDukeFrancis1914

That's fuckin weird, but super cool at the same time. haha

Maybe they were on the same label or something, and the producer or someone accidentally put the wrong label on the wrong disc lmao

  • this is tim mcilrath of rise against's favorite album

  • I love the structure of this song, its perfect!

  • i've only heard antenna, this just blew my head off. how many albums do they have?

  • @lecrapauddejerri9

4 full length albums: Until Your Heart Stops (1998), Jupiter (2000), Antenna (2003 ) and Perfect Pitch Black (2005) and a compilation album called Beyond Hypothermia that came out before their first album.

They also have a bunch of other stuff like eps, split eps, and a couple live albums. They were also on a bunch of compilations.

If you can't find this stuff, I can burn you some copies of the heavier stuff they did.

  • @thesunnandearth Nice one, cheers. I'll get back to you on the burning. Thanks.

  • This band sounds like a metalcore version of From First To Last. I like it a lot!!!!!

  • @TooLateTomorrow lollllllllllllllllllllllllllll

  • Reminds me of Tusk with breakdowns.

  • so someone tell me.. what's up with everything Cave In made after this? it's so... bleh. Like they just one day decided "ok guys.. we gotta pay the bills. let's write some really uninspired and generic shit that the masses will eat up." their other albums don't even hold a candle to this.

  • @lightthiscity11 are you fuckin serious?! when they changed their style it still was great music. just goes to show how talented these guys are.

  • @dubk311 since writing that i got a further taste of their newer stuff and i somewhat retract my previous statements haha.. some of it is actually pretty damn good.. i guess just overall it's not really my cup of tea. but this album right here has been my savior the past few weeks :)

  • @lightthiscity11 yeah, the masses will eat this shit up, which is why they get no response ever. For your general information, I heard the metallic influence took a halt because the singer suffered from vocal damage. If you think the change is just to be financially feasible, then fuck you, everything this band has recorded has been incredibly inspiring and I'm sure you're just a jaded piece of shit who can't enjoy music that has no relation to hardcore. Besides, it never reached mainstream.

  • @lightthiscity11 my response was pretty unnecessary, go play COD and listen to Bloc Party doucher.

  • @phogjuice mmm anything else you care to enlighten me with? your troll-speak is absolutely enthralling. not only have you proven yourself to be a giant opinionated asshole.. you went as far to look at my profile, and make a sweeping generalization based on a couple videos I've associated myself with. Your knee-jerk and insulting responses lead me to believe you are probably a very insecure person and thus need not be dealt with :). May you have a lovely evening. <3

  • @lightthiscity11 you're just as bad as me then, your OG statement was hypothesizing Cave In made intent to "write some really uninspired and generic shit that the masses will eat up," you were the troll in the first place. I had a marvelous evening thank you.

  • @lightthiscity11 you obviously havent listened to their newer material.

  • Got this album ten years ago or so, still listening, still love it. Only got to see them twice.

  • This is really different.. it's got a techy groove

  • snare snare snare snare snare snare snare snare snare snappy snappy snare snare

  • fuck all the gay genres its just good music metalhardmelodicpunk who gives a shit really?

  • @LAHC4Life no dude this is totally "fiercely carnivorous harmonicore"

  • Don't get me wrong Portrait of a Goddess is good, but this owns that on every level!

  • Please upload the rest of the album, I had it on a tape when I was 15!!!

Those were the good old days...

  • WATCH WITH YOUR HEART, RUN WITH YOUR GUT.

  • 3:40 - such a sick shriek leading into the riff.

  • i learned about this band after i clicked random article in wikipedia

  • epic masterpiece xXxxx <3

  • God damn what happened to these guys...

  • if you listen to the music this bands shit is the best fuckin bomb ass diminished shit and good rhythms

  • no way man, stephens screaming fuckin tears, its so raw and gutteral, you try and scream that way during an album recording, he couldnt talk for weeks afterwards.

  • segue 2..... fucking awesome

  • Seriously?

  • Are you kidding me?? This band was what those bands wish they will never be. As I Lay dying!! Pssssssss.....

  • this band destroys as i lay dying but what can you teach kids about this kinda hardcore you were probably listening to green day and cave in destroy talent wise do some research

  • get the fuck out of here with this shit. Those two bands sound nothing like these guys, and shouldn't even be in the same sentence as this band.

  • Green day are the gods of black metal

  • @gpunk76 If there's anything green day aren't besides straight it's black metal...

  • @BennettForPresident

That couldn't have been said any better.

  • @gpunk76 LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL no. green day sucks more nuts than Carmen Electra. The only difference between them is that Carmen Electra has big ass boobies. ( . Y . )

  • @gpunk76 you're calling punk... black metal... dumb...

  • @elvinzoriapa Wow, you guys took me seriously. You guys are now the gods of black metal. "Dumb"
