in IMDb, this movie is considered as a flop one cause it was the first directed movie by Jet. but i don't think so it was bad. i like this movie a lot. its dramatic, tragic, patriotic.
In the Thai version (that can be seen on YouTube), when Jet walks in the background, we hear a sound off a gun being loaded, the screen freezes, the credits come up, a sinister music cue plays and the sound of multiple gun shots.
In the English dubbed version, the screen freezes, there's no sinister music cue or sounds of a gun being loaded and fired. Plus there's no credits other than waiting around for 1 minute to see The End caption come up.
I have seen that thai version just now. I don't think were meant to assume he get shot by the old bill. The gun shots we hear were just somthing that went with the song in the credits. Well atleaset thats what I think.
Oh by the way, since you know this film very well, why did Jet get arrested after the girl and her old man were pushed off that cliff?
If you remember, one of the pedicab (or rickshaw) drivers was going to report to the authorities in case the Americans took things too far (like raping her).
Despite the obviousness of what happened, the Chinese officials didn't want to lose their allegiance with the Americans (since they helped them in the war).
Figuratively speaking, the Chinese officials wanted to sweep scandals under the carpet as the situation was one out of many skeletons in the closet regarding the presence of the U.S.

I think it would have added to the depression of the film if it showed scenes of the American soldiers raping women (like in Casualties of War) and killing kids.
For example, if Jet's cousin was raped before being killed (during the same scene where the uncle got killed), it would have added to the emotional power of the film.
If Ringo Lam was the director of the film, he would have given the Western actors a less cartoony sense of character.
