@RichardElden Fair assessment that Kennedy botched the Bay of Pigs, which, if successful, would have negated the missle fiasco, but that Kennedy did a great job in handling the missile crisis when it occurred? And Kennedy would have kept the USA out of Vietnam, and was a champion of civil rights. Had he lived the cold war may have come to an end sooner, and it may have been more peaceful world, even to this day.

@RichardElden Are you saying that the Republicans had undisputable knowledge of pending missiles in Cuba? How could they foresee that occurring? I think if Kennedy believed that was to occur he would have instituted the blockade at that time.

@RichardElden Kennedy did say he wasn't go to directly intervene, and the CIA did not take him at his word. Probably should have acted when Castro was battling Bautista, and either backed another regime, or did whatever necessary to get Castro on the side of the USA.

@RichardElden I'm thinking Kennedy may not have done so because of the potential ramifications with the Soviet Union over Berlin, and even the potential for nuclear war. This was at the height of the cold war, and LaMay was out his gord for wanting to have preemptive nuclear strikes against the Soviet Union. Turns out that some of the nuclear missiles in Cuba were armed and ready to fire, so good decision we did not use that as an excuse for invading.
