The whole warm/cool thing has always driven me nuts. I tried some Shu Uemura liquid foundation in 564 and it was too yellow for me. I love Shu Uemura foundation, so I am going to try 364 next time. I have redness to my face, but I think I am cool bc I am 100% Irish and I burn in the shade....yes? Wish I could send you my pic so you can tell me for sure.
Got the bottom info from a blog and its sooo true! but generally, we need to respect people's preferences and their makeup techniques! I hate ignorant people who want to force th ewolrd how to wear their makeup
@launwatch I never contradict myself you idiot! youre the one telling folks to put powder on their ears! with all that fold and stuff! thats just unsanitary! you mihgt as well tell others to put it on their feet too! I hate dumbass folks like you! leave people the fuck be! if they like the look..than so be it! I hate these ugly papercut thin lip/beety eyed bitches who tell folks how to wear their makeup! if they want to put it there, FINE! but dont preach your false gospel on folks! U DUMB BITCH
Usually we humans are not one tone! we are not all yellow! there are fair skinned yellow people with pink undertones. Its actually preferred to use a combo of tellow/olive and red/pink undertones. You have to experiment. If you are yellow and use only yellow foundation than you will appear more flat( which is great if thats what you like) but addingpink makes you look rosier and many people love that. SO I and other people who worked in the makeup industry can and will disagree with that.
It depends on what you are trying to bring out the most. On some days some people prefer to look more rosier so they use a pink undertone. Some people want that more rosier undertone because it looks fresher/young. We all know that NC is gold and NW is pink in MAC. NC is lighter than NW, NW is more reddish/pink. An NC40 and NW40. There are people who see both yellow and splotches of pink on them. A yellow person will not look "ashy" when wearing pink undertones, they will look PINKY
Some people are yellow toned which is light but with alot of splotches of pink. Ive seen many clients who are light/yellow but certain foundations made them look like "jaundice/yellow" they complained. The right combo of pink and yellow made them soo bright and radiant. Its all on personal preference, thats all.Our skin is very diverse
I am hooked. It all makes so much sense. Must admit I have become a little more daring lately, particularily when it comes to the amount of concealer and foundation.
Don't forget your EARS. White ears next to a toned/tan face JUST DON'T LOOK RIGHT! Remember to brush a little powder over around your ears, and the back of them at neck so it all matches. Just a quick swipe does it.
@launwatch you cant tell a person what looks right because makeup is subjective! I hate bronzer, I prefer pale whenit comes to foundations/powders! I dislike any bronzey looks..but I dont tell people to stop wearing bronzer. Some people are naturally lighter in other parts of their bodies! I doubt people will put powder on their ears, thats gross! u might as well put it on ur feet and hands
oh and thanks for discussing undertones! i am light at the moment but can tan well if i'm out in the sun. but my cheeks have a natural pink flush. so i've always been a bit confused as to whether i was "warm" or "cool" but now i know i'm just warm w/ pink cheeks! lol. no one ever mentions this either. they make it seem like if you see any hint of pink, that you are "cool."
Interesting concept with using the chest as a matching point as opposed to using the face. BUT what if my face is slightly darker than my chest? It is exposed all the time after all. Should I go with a shade darker then?
THANK YOU for clarifying the undertone issue! I was debating whether or not to get a foundation with pink undertones. The lady at the makeup store said I should, and I though the foundation looked TERRIBLE. Upon your recommendation, I switched. Oh my, it looks much better. :D
Goss you are so damn fabulous. I love your easy going, professional, non snooty attitude. If I become a millionaire, you can move into my guesthouse and do my makeup for $5,000 a day. K thanks!
Gass You're totally right about the skin tone colors, all of my sisters have warm tones, I have red in my cheeks but my arms get tan in the summer and when I started really wearing foundation a year ago I gravitated to the cool tones because I thought that's what I was, It never looked that good though so after your recommendation I switched to a warm undertone color and it totally cancelled out the redness in my cheeks, around my nose and eyelids and looks fab! <3'd the jaundice comment lol
you really have a very good bone structure. you don't really need a model at all! please make a "HOW TO" video about mineral make up applications by the way.
I LOVE YOU GOSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! I CANT SAY AND WRITE IT ENOUGH! I WISH I HAD THE MONEY TO SHIP YOU FROM THE UK TO MY HOUSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I WOULD MAKE YOU MY PERSONAL MAKEUP ARTIST EVERY SINGLE DAY!
i am indian with dark skin. at the mac counter they gave me a nc50 powder foundation and an nc45 concealer. is that wrong for me? am i nw and not nc? i hv yellow undertones. the lady said that nw will make me look red.
i really love watching your videos...yes we all agree you're hot, but you're really smart and present yourself well, you teach without condescending, and you seem to have plenty of info to share! i'm not even a makeup artist, i was just hoping to get some tips to make my 42 year old male self look better without looking 'obvious', but i'm super impressed with your method of teaching!
Haha - Yes, we Americans notice when the English and Aussies say "Haytch".
Seriously - Thank you for the helpful tips on this, all of this. I love the tricks - getting the foundation to set without a "locking" primer is golden - I want them to look like they are in their own skin - not someone else's. YaY!! \0/ And yes - you are a doll...because you are real...giving.
so if you are warmed toned, are you supposed to counteract that with foundation? or buy a warm toned foundation. so do you match skin or counteract it?
what do you think of mac studio sculpt foundation? i know it was very popular for a while but do you think it is a good foundation? i have semi oily skin and am nw20 in mac
I like to know if the MUD Foundation clog pores? is it non-comedogenic? I have oily skin. I'm looking for a full coverage foundation that doesn't clog my pores.
Thank you for the great tips. I now realize that I have been putting on my make-up so wrong; now I know why my concealer creases under my eyes and in the past it actually turned me off to even put make-up on as it makes me look older. Thank you again for all the info and tips.
I have a large port wine stain on my face what foundation would you recommend to cover it' I've used Mac studio fix fluid but it breaks me out and I hate the studio tech please help
I love you. You're brilliant. Oh btw, I second TheKenosan1. I'd like to mainly see the diff between cream and liquid foundation applications; close up, if you don't mind. Thanks.
Part 2 has proven as good as part 1. I'd like to see the difference between cream, mineral, and liquid foundations in application and ease of use, best coverage, etc...
Wayne - I really want to thank you! You have helped me sooooo much. I have suffered with oily skin and can't stand the fact that I spend alot of time on applying make up only for it to sink into the skin and end up with a greasy shine on my face! I have followed these very simple steps and guess what? It works!!!! I never have to touch up and am far less oily than I used to be. Thanks so much x
Are cream foundations bad for oily skin? I used to wear MAC's Full coverage, and even if it was set, i touched my face and it came off on my fingers. or when i hugged someone it would get on their clothing. I prepped and set my skin. was it due to applying foundation to heavily?
Wonderful video. Also is the MUD foundation a cream or liquid?
Love your videos. They are so informative and I have learned alot from watching just part 1 and 2 of these series of videos. Thank you for making them.
Thank you very much for all your videos. Learned lots from you; if possible could you please share your thoughts and tips on aged, pigmented (melasma) skin? What kind of foundation to use? Cheers!
Hello - EXELLENT tutorials. I have a question: I have deep wrinkles under my eyes due to eczema. This means the under eye area and sometimes, the eyelid are very dry. What is the best way to prep these areas. I find that my lines often appear deeper and emphasized with foundation and certain concealers. Any tips would be most appreciated!
Awesome as always! BUT I am sooo confused as I just had a Mac MUA suggest NW20 as a color of foundation for me. What does NW stand for? Not Warm? By your definition I am most definately warm. So should have NC something which would stand for? Sorry I am confused.
Wow - I am a very oily skinned girly and can't stand the fact that I spend alot of time on my Make Up only for it to slip and slide a few hours later. The tissue trick and place and roll with a puff really worked a treat - thanks so much x
I have been following your videos over the past month...applying everything in your recommended ways and getting such great results and compliments! Very impressed with your videos and info you share...thanks for the great work!
This is an awesome series, thanks so much for going to the touble. One question I would like to ask... what is the trick with the wet sponge, you mentioned it helps make skin look more natural but because the foundation you used doesn't require it we didn't get to see... is it just a matter of a 'stippling' technique, for want of a better word?
I think this series is awesome!! I can't wait for the next one! I'm a makeup artist in NZ and I still learn new things all the time!! Keep up the good work!
Thankyou for sharing your insider knowlege with us. I am really getting in to your videos. You are and excellent teacher. I really apreciate this free knowlege, esp as I am going to be paying to learn this stuff at college soon!
If only I could give you 5 more stars because this series deserves 10 stars per installment! You are so informative! It is like watching a fantastically interesting professor of make-up application! I am anxiously awaiting the other installments. I know I have stroked your ego a bit tonight, but it was all sincere. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. **SMOOCHES**
Great tipson the powder, tissue and q-tips. Wayne can you do a tutorial on correct moisturizer with various types of foundations such as matte, mineral, dewy, and oil free?? Thanks :o))))
great tips in here. There were a couple different things you did that I've never seen and never would have thought to do: one being using something to blot the face after foundation and another being the q-tip under the eye to remove the excess powder from creases. I'm going to start doing this and see how well it works out for me! Thanks for yet another great, informative video!
you are super genial thank you for all those great tips I can't wait for the rest. every time I watch a vid from you I learn something new.xoxoxo stay fabulous and god bless you
I have combination skin and when I use a liquid foundation it looks fine on its own. When I try to set it with a (loose or pressed) translucent powder either with a brush or with a puff, it looks terribly cakey. Am I using the wrong powder? The wrong foundation? The wrong technique? All of the above?
Btw...that MUD foundation...is that the actual name..or is that an acronym..?...I found a website..but wanted to make sure..and u use the cream? Where can i find the SHU brush..? Please and Thank you..!~
i do that with the tissue too....but i'm old school....lol.
When i use a brush..q-tip or whatever..I look up..to flatten that area out a bit..Or i'll put a q-tip there right under lash line.. to flatten the area...however i only like certain powder in that area..like a veil...I absolutely love a mineral veil..I've just ordered the Silica powder...i'm going to try it ..can't wait till it gets here..!..lol..
do I wish you lived next door. I would make you a cuppa and you could do my foundation for me. Oh well. guess I just have to keep practicing and learn to do it myself . lol
Thanks for such an informative tut. Do you have any recommendations on foundations for super oily skin? I have issues with oil coming through after only 10 mins and it can oxidise my foundation. I use a mineral make up with mac blot powder at the moment. Thanks Wayne!!
1.If your foundation oxidises (turns darker) pick a foundation with 1 shade lighter.
2.I think Rimmel or Revlon (but i think revlon.. hmm) has a foundation perfect for super-oily skin.
3. Try natural treatments for oily skin (NEVER alcohol). For example: aspirin mask, some citrus juice (oranges, grapefruits, lemons) with water (2:1 proportion).
4. Natural toners (put some water on organic rice, mix it until it gets whiter - theres's your toner to help control your oils). Don't use alcohol on your face becauseIT WILL stimulate oil secretion even more.
Thanks so much for your comments. I am very pale so it's difficult to go 1 shade lighter as the lightest shade in most ranges is too dark. I did try silica powder from TKB but it didn't really make a huge difference. I'll try your rice water toner suggestion though. Thanks again!
Use a Silica powder..to set your makeup...its awesome for oily skin...i was just saying I ordered some..can hardly wait till it gets here..to try it..lol...MUFE has some...however i bought mine from CS...alot cheaper..and is the same stuff..:)..Add me as a friend if u want...see when i get it..:D
Oh ok..well i know there is a difference between the concentration...particle size...Mufe uses 7..CS uses 2 microns..TKB uses 5...The smaller the better.....Which is why i went with them..but i've yet to try it...I look forward to it..and I hope it works..thanks for reply..!~
Thnx for the tip. I was always confused about which tone I am b/c I have reddness. And LOL at "doesn't mean you've got to look jaundice"! That made me laugh!!
The whole warm/cool thing has always driven me nuts. I tried some Shu Uemura liquid foundation in 564 and it was too yellow for me. I love Shu Uemura foundation, so I am going to try 364 next time. i think mud maybe be the foundation for me. im using prescriptives right now in cocoa y/o and it just isnt deep enough!!
nto to mention ashy.
i have dark skin but with a nice orangy/gold undertone that i dnt want to mute out! mud maybe the one.
i had a look at illamasqua(sp) but that was too theatrical and heavy.
so it is a toss up between mud and becca???? which to choose.....some help would be cool if you could.

Awesome as always! BUT I am sooo confused as I just had a Mac MUA suggest NW20 as a color of foundation for me. What does NW stand for? Not Warm? By your definition I am most definately warm. So should have NC something which would stand for? Sorry I am confused.
Catalina031 2 years ago
makeupbytiffanyd has a great explanation on the nw vs nc. i suggest you go look it up.
itslaurennlove 2 years ago
thank you for the direction to tiffany
Catalina031 2 years ago
nw stands for neutralize warmth..which would mean you are warm toned, but you are toning it down.

Wow - I am a very oily skinned girly and can't stand the fact that I spend alot of time on my Make Up only for it to slip and slide a few hours later. The tissue trick and place and roll with a puff really worked a treat - thanks so much x

Great work again, thank you so much

great tips in here. There were a couple different things you did that I've never seen and never would have thought to do: one being using something to blot the face after foundation and another being the q-tip under the eye to remove the excess powder from creases. I'm going to start doing this and see how well it works out for me! Thanks for yet another great, informative video!

I have combination skin and when I use a liquid foundation it looks fine on its own. When I try to set it with a (loose or pressed) translucent powder either with a brush or with a puff, it looks terribly cakey. Am I using the wrong powder? The wrong foundation? The wrong technique? All of the above?

Even the NC15 is too dark for me. It's annoying.
LSxo7 2 years ago
get outta here...that probably means you are NW15 because that one is lighter.
You might need to mix a bit of foundation with moisturizer. That always seems to help lighten my foundation for the winter :)

Btw...that MUD foundation...is that the actual name..or is that an acronym..?...I found a website..but wanted to make sure..and u use the cream? Where can i find the SHU brush..? Please and Thank you..!~

Thank you! :)
Ayla888 2 years ago
i do that with the tissue too....but i'm old school....lol.
Thanks for sharing..I love your videos..!~

Thanks for such an informative tut. Do you have any recommendations on foundations for super oily skin? I have issues with oil coming through after only 10 mins and it can oxidise my foundation. I use a mineral make up with mac blot powder at the moment. Thanks Wayne!!
chewyliz 2 years ago
a few stuff (unless you know them already).
For example: aspirin mask, some citrus juice (oranges, grapefruits, lemons) with water (2:1 proportion).
mnyvld 2 years ago
4. Natural toners (put some water on organic rice, mix it until it gets whiter - theres's your toner to help control your oils). Don't use alcohol on your face becauseIT WILL stimulate oil secretion even more.
Hope it helps.
mnyvld 2 years ago
I said organic rice because pesticide-treated rice leaves pesticeide solution "artefacts" in the water.
Also try HUSK with warm water as a mask. Works great but smells a bit weird
mnyvld 2 years ago
Thanks so much for your comments. I am very pale so it's difficult to go 1 shade lighter as the lightest shade in most ranges is too dark. I did try silica powder from TKB but it didn't really make a huge difference. I'll try your rice water toner suggestion though. Thanks again!
chewyliz 2 years ago
Use a Silica powder..to set your makeup...its awesome for oily skin...i was just saying I ordered some..can hardly wait till it gets here..to try it..lol...MUFE has some...however i bought mine from CS...alot cheaper..and is the same stuff..:)..Add me as a friend if u want...see when i get it..:D
MercedesGames 2 years ago
Hi and thanks for your comment. I have tried silica from TKB (much cheaper than MUFE) but the diference wasn't that spectacular on me :(
Hope it works for you ;)
chewyliz 2 years ago
Oh ok..well i know there is a difference between the concentration...particle size...Mufe uses 7..CS uses 2 microns..TKB uses 5...The smaller the better.....Which is why i went with them..but i've yet to try it...I look forward to it..and I hope it works..thanks for reply..!~
