Jeez. Do people actually think that the lyrics to "Pearly Shells" were written by native Hawaiians? In English? If you want to complain about it, at least think it through first, and give the actual title of the original Hawaiian song, not the title as given by the authors of the English words.
If you are going to be aggressively politically correct and take offense on the behalf of someone who is not even complaining, at least try not to be a maroon about it.
Sigh, what memories. Such a sweet song. Kudos to the C&H team for developing such a prize tune. Oh wait, they didn't. They ripped off a native Hawaiin/Filipino tune called "Pearly Shells" without giving due credit. Shame on you, C&H.
@sirmolio How old is the song? I am betting it's in the public domain. Also do you have any proof they didn't get permission from who ever owns the rights to the song if it's not in the public domain?
@DJBell1986 No idea about the legalities of it. It's more the principle of not acknowledging the cutlural authorship of the song in any way and exploiting it for commercial purposes. I doubt the Hawaiian natives who's heritage created this song care much about our westernized "public domain." It just would have been nice, i.e. the right thing to do. They could have exploited the song (yes, that's what they did) while still acknowledging its origins in some way.
OmG yes I so remember this one Thank you for posting it......when we first moved to Hawaii there was sugar cane on both sides of the road going to Waianae I so remember it....it was so beautiful & peaceful then :) the little boy is adorable :)
Thanks for posting this. It reminds me of when I saw this as a kid, and my father was able to get me an actual sugar cane- in North Idaho. It was one of a few memories I have of my dad before he died.
My 5th grade teacher was Hawaiian and taught us "Pearly Shells" among other songs. He used to tell us that he was in a C&H commercial that used that song. I'm thinking this might be it...
Thanks for posting this. I grew up in California and have been living in Hawaii since 1986. I was trying to tell my wife (from Hawaii) that this C&H commercial jingle is the song, "Pearly Shells". She has never seen this commercial. I don't think they aired this commercial in Hawaii. I have to show her now.
