Barney's gun did NOT fire a blank! There is a smoke filled squeeze bulb in the bottom of his holster that released the smoke when the barrel made contact with it. The flash was artistically added to the master and the gunshot audio dubbed in. Since this was in B & W, the viewing audience was none the wiser. This was before the days of CGI.

Of course the show is a comedy, and Barney is a decent lovable nice guy...but his "cop" skills and attitudes are a satire on small men with big egos pulling power trips.

If you really don't know or have never met cops (or others in authority) who are officious and ull of them selves, then you don't know many people. lol

To those that object to this bit of truth, is that an indication that the "shoe" may fit you!

Barney so typifies the bad cop who is both incompetent and full of himself (and it usually is a male).

In a TV show about Mayberry and with a sane and competent boss like Sheriff Andy there; Barney is indeed a hilarious joke.

Sadly, it seems that people like Barney have gravitated to the top of too many police and military and political positions of power.

The combination of arrogance and incompetence is costing us all dearly.

If I remember correctly, Don Knotts said that these particular scene required a lot of takes because he kept cracking up at Howard McNear. I loved this show, great comedy is timeless!

I've probably watched every episode of Andy Griffith 200 times but even watching this scene for the 201st time you can see how Andy is trying not to laugh at Howard McNair. The camera has to cut away every time Don Knotts gets in Floyds face. Why can't they make comedy like this any more?

Don Knotts ruined take after take of this scene when he repeatedly broke out laughing at Floyd's response to his question, "What's your badge number?" Floyd quietly looked at his badge and replied, "Three", which repeatedly sent Knotts into spasms of laughter. Several takes were required before he could control himself and continue with the scene.
