Hi Helene, I just finished reading your book that I bought at Starbucks in Logan, Utah - USA back then on vacation in November 2008. I LOVED IT!!! Thank you for sharing your memoir; I didn't even know anything about Liberia and all related details. So happy I brought this with to read on vacation here in Phuket, Thailand. Wishing you all the best. - Jason Peterson, from Germany
LET ME B CLEAR! DIS LADY IS LIKE OBAMA 2 ME. SOME BLACK AMERICAN VOTED 4 HIM CUZ HES BLACK N BROUGHT DEM PRIDE. IM CHERIN DIS LADY 2 DA END CUZ SHE MAKE ME PROUDE 4 HER ACOMPLISHEMENT. WHETHER R NOT SHES 100% ACURATE DONT REALY CARE MUCH. DA WHITEMAN WROTE OUR HISTORY WIT 80% ACURACY N WE STUDY 8, SO IF HELENE IS OFF BY 10% I SAY BRAVO. KEEP WRITIN HELENE WE NEED MORE.
Please, congratulate this book. Believe me, no-one complains about the tons of books on the various aspects/family life of the THE HOLOCAUST in Europe, I can count 10 books and even films that deal with the good the bad, the ugly of that history,
Helene: Thank you. I'm native. When the uneducated took power, the country burned. Since 1980, Liberia has never become peaceful. Education is Light to Evil. Tolbert was the only well educated who ever ruled Liberia. He tried very hard to stop divisions. Liberia is actually not in our hands today. His enemies where the once he mainly helped. Most Liberian regret and ask God for forgiveness. I look for the book.. There is nowhere in the World one can get a Bag of Rice for $4.00
@Ancientafrica i disagree wit u, we al suport a gud education but education witout morals is dead n lib hav goten educated ppl since 8s formation but no morals. da uneducated man (doe) was surended by educated 1s n arguably is consider 1 of lib best pres givin his background compare 2 previous leaders. honestly da war didnt start as a result of 10yrs of doe but da fail policy since 1847. 10yrs of ignorance dont bring bout cannibalism. da educated fail us way b4 da uneducated. Tolbert was great
No, Doe didn't have educated people around him. The people you are thinking about were never able to fine any meaningful jobs in the USA; then how could they transfer knowledge and know-how to Liberia? They were complete serious fools; Liberia and Ellen still have same problem. In the 1970's we were thousands of children going to school. How many are medical doctors, engineers, etc today? Find a Liberian working as a high-end technical person in USA? Liberia is not free now.
@Ancientafrica disagree again bro. bcuz our educational system wasnt high tech focused r individual career choice is/was not high tech focused dont mean dey r not educated. deir education was strictly admiistrative n da same trend continous 2day (i gues we wish more lib wil choose a career dat is high tech oreinted, 8 is hapenin on a smal scale). if u wil regard educated ppl only as dose in da high tech career field, dan lib is being led 2day by bunch of fools includin ELLEN da economist.
Being clueless and seeing what was going on around you are 2 diff. things. Lets just say it mostly did not affect you so u didnt care ... typically Liberian! Guess what? We all have a fvcked up Liberia b/c of that attitude!

In a memoir, all you do is speak your truth, lucky for us, more books will come from some who grew up differently in Liberia at that time
(let say for instance the Ghanaian driver in her book, or even the mother of her "adopted" sister who lived in the country side).
