This is what singing with the whistle register for years and years will do to your voice. Mariah's voice is still great, no doubt. Let alone she is Mariah fucking Carey, a living legend. But back in the day there was no voice at all that could touch her outside of a couple select singers. Not that there are many more nowadays. But that whistle register will tear up any voice with the high notes if you continue to tour around the world continously and strain your vocal chords.
@gayfarmerboy Whistle register has nothing to do with ruining the voice. If done properly, with no tension, it is fine. The voice will 'fall into' the whistle register to produce the higher pitches. Singing fifth octave notes in chest voice is what damaged her voice (ala belting).
@rekupp It's a combination of both i'm sure. The stress on vocal chords over the years of continuous touring. I've never heard of anyone being able to use the whistle register without putting tension.

A lot of people said the Mariah's voice is gone. It's wrong. The truth is, her voice got worse in 2001, but definitely not gone. She's getting better after 2001 and have done several amazing albums and live performances. You'll know it after watching this video.

um yeah it is true that the note kept sustaining at the end when she had already quit singing... i think they put special effects on the end to make the note last longer ... I love Mariah but this is the worst live performance I've ever heard her at... If you think this is one of her worst, you should see some of her performances from the last couple of years she had some pretty bad days. There is no echo in her mic or her voice,not even when she recorded it in the studio.The only reason people say it's an echo is because she pulls it father away from her mouth,and then it looks like as she closes her lips that the sound is still echoing...So no the human voice cannot phontate echo,unless amplified by mic or sound bouncing off the walls.
That C5 at the end was not live. She has only done it live a few times. But who can blame her? It comes after successive E5s and literally no time to catch a breath. This song is damned hard to sing.
@rekupp um that note IS in fact live. if it wasn't, the volume would be slightly different than the her belting before it. On top of that, it doesn't fade as much as the C5 note does on the album and doesn't last as long. I can assure you that this /entire/ performance is live. And you're right. No one except for Mariah can sustain that long note after belting like that because she's /Mariah Carey./ That's /exactly/ what makes the song unique and special in its own way and so impossible to sing
@TheMCLamb4ever That added echo effect towards the end of the note, is not vibrato. Yes, she does apply it to the C5, but that echo is an effect the human voice can not naturally phonate. It is lipped.
@rekupp It is possible to create the echo effect by pulling the mic away which is what she does. Dunno if this one was live but she's done it on other performances

this aints lipped...she turns all redish at the last chorus when going up an octave..and the raspy and edgy to the sound which actually sounds great is prove...amazing performance ...and people plss tell me...have u seen anybody else sing or try to cover this song like mariah does it....

I think Mariah Carey has one of the best voices I have ever heard and I love watching her live performances but this time I dunno, it's her body language and the way she sings I think, that made me suspect that she might be lipsyncing some of the parts....not judging her, just an observation.

um yeah it is true that the note kept sustaining at the end when she had already quit singing... i think they put special effects on the end to make the note last longer ... I love Mariah but this is the worst live performance I've ever heard her at... I'm a singer too and it's obvious she was struggling a lot... i think she had a cold or something... she recovered the song well and got through it just fine... no singer has 100% perfect days... I love Mariah she's awesome...

@sjtherage I dont know how you can say that. This is amazing, one of her best performances of this song. If you think this is one of her worst, you should see some of her performances from the last couple of years she had some pretty bad days. Maybe you being a singer means you have a better ear for it, but to an average person she sounds fantastic

There is no echo in her mic or her voice,not even when she recorded it in the studio.The only reason people say it's an echo is because she pulls it father away from her mouth,and then it looks like as she closes her lips that the sound is still echoing...So no the human voice cannot phontate echo,unless amplified by mic or sound bouncing off the walls.

That C5 at the end was not live. She has only done it live a few times. But who can blame her? It comes after successive E5s and literally no time to catch a breath. This song is damned hard to sing.

@rekupp um that note IS in fact live. if it wasn't, the volume would be slightly different than the her belting before it. On top of that, it doesn't fade as much as the C5 note does on the album and doesn't last as long. I can assure you that this /entire/ performance is live. And you're right. No one except for Mariah can sustain that long note after belting like that because she's /Mariah Carey./ That's /exactly/ what makes the song unique and special in its own way and so impossible to sing

@TheMCLamb4ever That added echo effect towards the end of the note, is not vibrato. Yes, she does apply it to the C5, but that echo is an effect the human voice can not naturally phonate. It is lipped.

@rekupp It is possible to create the echo effect by pulling the mic away which is what she does. Dunno if this one was live but she's done it on other performances

@xxcrazylukexx You are confusing that synthetic echo effect with vibrato. The echo effect is not reproducible by the human vocal chords...it was not live. She has only done it live at BET Blueprint.

@rekupp and live at Grammy's and the MTV Movie awards 05.and she does it live more often nowadays.Though i'll admit she lipped the end parts a lot because it was so long to hold.Still there isn't really an echo on the last sustained C5,just a long vibrato using the togetherrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

@aquamarine11500 No it is not live at MTV Movie Awards. It was done live at Bet Blueprint and Grammys 06. The C5 is difficult because the ending chorus is raised an octave higher and it comes after successive E5s.

@rekupp Well ok,if you say so.I still think the Movie awards is live. Also if that was the case ,then why is it so hard to go up an octave live? Mariah makes quick transitions between notes all the time.She is always going up and down the scale with ease, transcending registers at an instant..why so hard to believe now??
I mean we ALL know MC has her lipping days or "Vocal rest" every now and again,but it's really hard to believe out of this whole era she only song the end live twice. =/
