I recall hearing this song somewhere in the early 80's when I was a kid, maybe on the Real People show or something like that, ring a bell for anyone out there?
I remember when this song was popular. When it came on during the trip home from school my mom wouldn't turn the radio off until it was over. We spent a lot of time in our parking lot listening to this one.
@kja427 i'll tell u why "they" don't make novelty hits like Junk Food Junkie or Mr. Jaws or Dead Puppies is because creativity is dead in Hollywood. Think about it, all the old movies and tv shows are being re-made. too bad because it (creativity) can be a lot of fun!
I used to be a jukebox mechanic in the '70's so I collected some real jewels back then. This was one of my favorites and it's still on the one jukebox I kept, sitting in my living room right now.Thanx for posting.
@jreno665 Yes, it exists. And it was a big hit back in the day. It's a novelty song, which meant that it was intended to make us smile and laugh as we listened to it. Unfortunately, today's musicians can't be bothered with such songs, with certain exceptions like Ray Stevens. You might try broadening your horizons a bit.
@AdmiralCSN I actually love novelty songs. Weird Al and Flight of the Concords are awesome. I was being what one would call "ironic". You might try broadening you allegations a bit, jackass.
Wow!! I can't believe I'm actually SEEING Larry Groce!! I totally never pictured him looking like that! I remember hearing most of his music on Disney records. Though there is one question: How is Groce pronounced? Is it "gross," or is it pronounced just like Jim Croce's name?
Now that was pretty cool...I haven't heard this song for probably 30 years or so. I'm an old crusty air-dog now, but thanks for reminding me that I was once young and silly, too :)
I attended Ashford Rumble Grade school in Ashford, WV and I remember this guy coming to our school and singing this song and helping the class to write a song. Thanks for posting.
Larry Groce(born 4/22/48) in Dallas, Texas. Singer/songwriter/musician and radio host. He became A One-hit-wonder singer with "Junk Food Junkie" in 1976. Since then he has be well known for his classic children's songs for Walt Disney Records. Since 1986, Groce has hosted the public radio program MOUNTAIN STAGE.
Sorry shellback963. "Junk Food Junkie only got as high as #9 on the Billboards Charts in Feburary 1976. Check wikipedia on-line for more info on Larry Groce. I have the original 45rpm.
You're right! My younger sister and I own most of the 45rpm records in our family. She lives in Jersey City and I'm here in Surfside Beach, South Carolina.
45rpm means "45 revolutions per minute" for that size record when played on A Record Player at that adjusted speed. Older record players had 78rpm, but record players that came out in the late 1950's and early '60s had three speeds, including 33&1/3rpm. They gave way to cassettes and 8-tracks in the early '70s.
This is a great song. I once recited this song as a poem in a junior high poetry reading contest (declamation contest) and won second prize! Thanks to Jim Groce for a great song and thanks whomever posted this video.

There was a really good AMV for this song on YouTube once; it was all live-action, and it was hilarious! Too bad I can't find it anymore... :(

This... exists? This isn't a joke? This has to be some kinda gimmick. It can't be real... it can't be... please?
jreno665 9 months ago
@jreno665 No joke. It was a big hit record in the '70s. Back in those days, novelty tunes often made the charts. I kind of miss that sometimes.
aircap 9 months ago
@aircap Yep. "Dead Skunk" "Uneasy Rider" "Wildwood Weed" " The Streak"
Lots of novelty tunes thet were big hits and great memories
Being pre-video era helped also - a video locks an idea into
your mind - you can imagine something every time you hear a
song if you don't have a video clouding your imagination Yes it's nice to know what the artist or director assigned by
the rec. co. meant to instill but as we all know sometimes a
video just ruins a tune
