Bummer, dude. I don't know what to say. if you get the chance to get into Sonic Youth, I REALLY hope you reconsider your decision. He's literally, beyond my bloated fan opinions, a musical genius. Thurston makes guitar playing look like a way of life-he's done work with Glenn Branca's guitar symphonies and had countless side projects all based around his totally unique guitar style.

Well, I too can play a lot of different instruments and I know a lot about music theory, and I love Sonic Youth because they NEVER go near clichéd scale runs or formulaic chord progressions. They are artists who are more concerned with textures of sound, both built up by effects, but mainly by alternative tunings, cluster chords and drones. However, they are rarely experimental for the sake of being awkward, rather they use their unique approach to create songs of great drama, beauty and emotion

There is more to guitar playing than 'virtuosity' in standard tuning. Music isn't a science, or a sport, it is an art form. It is about personal expression and creativity, not adhering to a set of stifling rules. That's why I have no interest in shredders who are more into exercising their forearms than their imaginations.

Secondly, there are hundreds of songs where both Thurston and Lee Ranaldo play in minor keys.
