  • I have the entire series on DVD! Love it! Not a cheap investment but worth every penny

  • Who else thinks it's adorable that Holmes called Watson "John" for once?

  • This episode used to freak me out when I was younger.... just funny now! :p

  • I feel awful xD I was laughing out loud at his spasms (and half of the dream sequence, because lets face it, its old, its going to look cheesy). It isn't till he says John that all the emotions start to sink in and I feel sincerly sorry for him. ):

  • Of course I will stay

  • That's more or less how the 'Bi-polar

feels most of the time anyway..

  • Someone's high.

  • Very touching bit, this. From "I thought I knew my Watson" to his worry at the end there. The fact that he used Watson's first name in his delirious state shows just how vulnerable he was here. Aww. I love these two. Such good friends. And JB as Holmes is so amazing. :)

  • After he yelled "JOHN" I was expecting him to follow it with "HOLY SHIT"

  • @MrsCamui I would of XD

  • I find it so sexy when Jeremy has long hair and it's NOT slicked back and in front of his face.

  • Like this is totally the first time this has happened to him...

  • I love the end. awww Sherlock does care about his dear Watson. They are such cute friends.

  • "of course i shall stay"

"i thought i knew my watson..."

    <3

  • @darijoe *facepalm* Sorry ... my sister got into my account and looked through my faves. Sigh ...

  • @GordyLake Hahaha! Oh boy...

  • Umm. Lol, is this real?? XD

  • @GordyLake Well Sherlock Holmes wasn't a real person lol, but this is taken unedited from an episode of what is considered the best TV adaptation of the Sherlock Holmes stories.

  • ahhh those were the days

  • whoa man thats like pot

  • Watson: 'We could've been killed!'

    NOW you tell him?

  • bad trip.. bad trip.

  • Holy... freaking... crap...

  • That..

    that..

    LOL

  • What the crap is up with the kid at @ 4:02 ???

  • Holmes's mind scares me O+O

  • daaamn he sounds just like alan rickman :o

  • He sounds like some angry cat when he screams XD

  • @DrBreakfastMachine

LUV YOUR COMMENT -3- I REALY THINK SO!!!

  • At 3.40 when Holmes is running, Jeremy Brett looks much more like how he looked in real life.

  • Omg. That was way too trippy for a Sherlock Holmes episode. It made me think of Jeremy Brett's own struggle with mental illness. =(

    But also: funny.

  • when watson says "we could have been killed" my mind automatically says "or worse expelled" XD

  • @TheHalftimelord Hahahahahahaha!!!!! Harry Potter meets Sherlock Holmes!! :D

  • wooouh

  • I don't know whether to call this guy stupidly reckless or recklessly stupid=_=

  • Yeeah, never let David Lynch direct Sherlock Holmes.

  • Holmes yells out "John!" at the end of this clip, not "Done!", as some subtitles would have you believe, because he was reaching out to Watson, his friend, by yelling his first name, something the professional Holmes wouldn't do

  • @vincentpricesnephew I thought it was really sad, and yet really adorable. He let himself go, and showed that he cared, aww

  • Ok, i love JB, but seriously, dude, what is up with the hair???? I like it much better longer and NOT SLICKED BACK! Lol

  • @prolifeprincess looks like Sherlock Holmes forgot to take his gel with him on holiday!

  • @darijoe LOL!!!!!!!! Yep, looks like it indeed!

  • @prolifeprincess he was going though withdrawal in this episode for cocaine use in this episode. Holmes was a well-known cocaine and morphine user

  • @vincentpricesnephew yeah, i know, it's still kinda freaky though.... ;)

  • @prolifeprincess i find myself agreeing with you very much on that.

  • @prolifeprincess He got sick of the slicked back hair and cut it himself (Without asking the directors, and man were they mad.) I'm sure you can tell what a bad job he did in the latter ones that looks like a dog chewed it off. I don't know why the poor darling didn't just ask to not have it slicked back. Ah well :) I love him anyways, bad hair cut and all. <3

  • "JOHN!"

  • this is the only stupid thing holmes ever does

  • @Starryvideos idiot! he did it because he was despite for human realization! he was going through with drawl from cocaine and not working he needed to feeling something other than boredom

  • i have been there !!!!

  • Holmes is trippin' balls!

  • 2:34

    "Of course I shall stay."

"I thought I knew my Watson."

    <3 I love these two.

  • JOHN!!!!!

  • Pause at 3.09. stick a tiny moustache on him and he becomes Hercule Poirot. Conspiracy? i think so!!

  • sometimes his experimentation goes a tad too far :) thanks for uploading this!!

  • he sounds like snape...

  • The only time in the entire series where he calls him "John" and not "Watson". Always thought it odd calling each other by their last names anyway, although that's what they did in the stories.

  • @Hendo56 but it is even weirder when they call each other by first names

  • 4:35 - new dance form? XD

  • aha he called him John!!

also that was a lot more psychadelic than i imagined in the book lol

  • Oh, wow. That was SO caring.

    1. Because Watson wants Holmes to solve it, and knows he cannot stop him from trying, he stays just to make sure he'll be okay.

    2. Because Holmes is sorry to have included Watson in his stupid idea. He is never sorry about ANYTHING, really.

  • JOHN!!!!!

xD I shouldn't have, but I seriously lol'd right there.

  • "Holmes!"

    "EEEAUGH!"

    "Holmes!"

    "EEEYOUAAH!"

    "Holmes! HOLMES!"

    "...JOOOOHHHNNN!"

  • "JOHN!"

wow really is the first times iv'e heard him say his name..

  • holmes! aaaaah holmes!

    AAAAAAAH HOLMES! ah?

  • That was rather creepy.

  • Watson, for the first time, couldn't be more right? What was Holmes thinking? *shakes head*

Either way, that illusion was creepy and his little freaking out session was quite entertaining.

  • Sherlock is cool

  • This was probably the stupidest thing Sherlock Holmes ever did. "I think this powder might be an exotic poison that has killed two people and seriously injured two more. To test my theory I think I'll expose Dr. Watson and myself to a half-dose of the substance in a secluded cottage far away from any possible help, and without telling anybody what I'm doing."

  • If I was Watson I would have just proceeded to slap him. That was definitely the stupidest thing he's ever done.

But I'm glad he did it, so we could have a look at those stellar eighties special effects.

  • He didnt need to slap him. the drug did it for him lol.

  • I agree, but I forgive him ... Sherlock Holmes is still my favorite fictional character and will be forever.

  • He had a self-destructive streak sometimes. Was a bit addicted to excitement and danger. So I think it makes sense according to his character

    :-)

  • you forgot cocaine among his addictions...

  • True. Thank you.

  • @ZolotayaKoshka the whole point of this episode was he was in withdrawal for cocaine, so he chose this to help him with his case and his addiction

  • @AnacreoninHeaven - Dude! - LOLZ and right on the mark! Awesome!

  • @AnacreoninHeaven Yup yup defiantly sounds like a good plan to me. I mean, what could possibly go wrong? lol

  • @AnacreoninHeaven Holmes was going through withdrawal fro cocaine and not working. he chose to have something else stimulate his brain. have you ever been so intellectually board it hurts to think and all you can do is sleep but sleep is even too boring? that was what Holmes was going through.

  • @AnacreoninHeaven In the book, he even says so afterwards...

  • @AnacreoninHeaven xDDDDD rofl wow....that made a lot more sense just watching it...and even /THEN/ it didn't make much sense at all!! I have to admit...not exactly Holmes' brightest moment U.U

  • when holmes hells john i always thought he yelled darn! only just noticed it.

  • Englishmen don't say, "darn". I should know, I am one.

  • what do Englishmen say?

  • "Damn!" "God!" "Good Lord!" "Gosh!" ... those are the ones that don't involve lots of swearing.

  • Most Americans don't say it either, unless their parents happen to be looking over their shoulder while they're typing.

I find it silly to use because "darning" is mending socks.

  • It is said many times on this page, yet "I thought I knew my Watson." is SUCH a great, beautiful, sexy and homo erotic line... I can't bear it!

  • As someone who is a devotee of all things Holmes, YES Brett is the quintessential HOLMES. DOYLE would be proud..I miss him.

  • @RachTrinity - We do too. He left us far too soon.

  • As much as Brett is the definitive Holmes, Edward Hardwicke is equally the best Watson ever portrayed.

When other writers and actors attempt to make Watson out to be a bumbling fool, it makes me sick.

First of all, Holmes is far too educated and would never associate with an idiot. It wouldn't be logical.

Secondly, Watson was a studied medical doctor and a surgeon in the army. Only an idiot would portray Watson as anything less than the wise and adventurous assistant that Hardwicke gives us

  • Have you watched the russian series? It really is very good- I'm a staunch JB fan and agree entirely with the Watson-Is-Not-An-Idiot argument, and these guys are VERY GOOD...

  • @doctorcropcircles - From two other Staunch JB fans - he was BORN to be Sherlock - We salute you. :)

  • "I thought I knew my Watson." Beautiful, beautiful line....

  • lol sherlock holmes had a bad trip

  • i thought i knew my watson lol

  • He doesn't really go crazy, the freaky poison stuff makes him hallucinate. This was a very weird episode of Sherlock Holmes, very creepy where it shows what it did to the first people. I wouldn't want that stuff in my fireplace :o

  • JOHN!!!!

  • Jeremy Brett: a wonderful voice, magnificent actor.

  • the trip gives a glimpse of moriarty

  • it is so NOT COOL to see Holmes ever lose control. Did Granada ever do an adaptation of the Three Garridebs? A great moment in that story!!!!

  • They didn't do the whole thing, instead incorporating part of the story into their adaptation of The Mazarin Stone. JB was ill and not in it, but even when they thought he would be, they STILL didn't include that wonderful moment. I can't understand why myself. I'm with you, I think it's a splendid snapshot of Holmes in a different light!

  • Exact-tic-tacly! The Three Garridebs moment is one of the very few where we get to see Holmes might love Watson as much(AS A FRIEND) as Watson loves him!

  • True, very true,akirakun7.

but,heh...i've never seen Holmes actually scream before O.O a little disturbing

  • Bad trip man! Brett was priceless in this, never saw him anything else - he's definitely from the Tom Baker school of acting!

  • lol that is one of the best episodes that i have seen!

  • it's so sweet that holmes calls him john ^.^ i have to say this epsiode is even better than the story. luv it!

  • Why in the world would Holmes say done? That makes no sense. I like how he says John. Its sweet and more human.

  • I heard "John" the first time I saw it. Then I watched it with subtitles and they said "done" so I thought I had misheard it. Later I read somewhere else that Jeremy had gotten some complaints from the purists for having Holmes call Watson by his first name. Jeremy defended his decision by saying that Holmes had been drugged and half out of his head, and in that situation he would call Watson 'John' and that he did it to show that Holmes is not a heartless machine.

  • Well, good for Mr. Brett! *cuddles Watson and Holmes plushies*

  • lol omg

  • Holmes yelling: "JOHN!!" It's so incredible sweet :)

  • Lovely!!

But Watson has to be much younger (he was 2 years younger than Holms)!!!!!!!!!

And he undoubtedly has to be more charming...

  • I think he was two years older? But I'm not sure.

And if you watch more Holmes with Edward Hardwicke as Watson, trust me, you'll see how wonderfully charming he really is. ^_^

  • "I thought I knew my Watson." ^_^

My favorite Holmes moment EVER is in the story "Three Garridebs." Someone tell me if you can tell which moment it is. ^_^

  • "You're not hurt, Watson? For God's sake, say you are not hurt!" Did I even get that quote right?

  • Just so.

"It was worth a wound-it was worth many wounds- to know the depth of loyalty and love which lay behind that cold mask. The clear, hard eyes were dimmed for a moment, and the firm lips were shaking. For the one and only time I caught a glimpse of a great heart as well as of a great brain. All my years of humble but single-minded service culminated in that moment of revelation."

The more I think about it, the more miffed I am that Brett and Hardwicke never shared that exchange.

  • I know exactly what you mean! That has to probably be one of if not my favourite quote from any of the Sherlock Holmes stories (and I've read them all!) And as Jerermy and Hardwicke were in my eyes the quite essential and best Holmes and Watson ever, I too wish they had of had this exchange of words!

  • yes if only Watson did not just write it but also told Holmes about his thoughts it will surely be very very very dramatic. Good thing there was that "Garrideb" to make the scene. (I've read them all too)

  • maybe its because brett was quite anti drugs and didnt want any positive effects of drug taking included in the show

he buried his needle is this episode too didnt he, again betraying the book

he wrote to conan doyles daughter grand daughter to get permission to do this i think, what right she had to have any say so i dont know

anyways yeah, good scene "JOHN!" - brilliant

those drawing are by william blake if anyones wondering

    which they probably were not

  • I was... Thanks! Tattoo worthy!

  • oh my god love that bit in the book it moved me so much i had to read it again!

  • @RenaissanceWomanNY They combined my two favourite episodes, The Mazarin Stone and The Three Garridebs (the MS because Holmes is so badass is that and the TG because the Watson-Holmes moment), and took Homes out of it... I will never get over it...

  • @Elanel That happened in the book too? awwwwwwwww

  • @SpockLover27

    yes in the story, too.

    Read the stories!

  • @Ramigurl I'm trying to! :) I have this really old awesome Sherlock Holmes complete book that I got from a big book sale. I want to be careful with it. And I have school to do too... :)

  • Waaaa aaaargh aaargh... JOHN! I love it!

  • You know, I was wondering awhile ago whether Holmes said "done!" or "John!" So I put in my DVD, turning on the subtitles.

According to them, he says "done." Of course, they could be wrong, and I want for him to have said "John," but I don't know.

  • The subtitles are incorrect more than once. He says "John."

  • I like Watson yelling at Holmes, it is a far more believable(and human) reaction than just saying, "It is my greatest joy and privlige to help you." Holmes calling Watson "John!" was pretty sweet.

  • Agreed. Not even Watson is patient enough to say something so banal after his best friend could have gotten the both of them killed or institutionalized- even if it is in the interest of justice.

  • Doyle sure thought he was though! Isn't it amazing how Granada was actually able to improve upon the original story?
