I feel awful xD I was laughing out loud at his spasms (and half of the dream sequence, because lets face it, its old, its going to look cheesy). It isn't till he says John that all the emotions start to sink in and I feel sincerly sorry for him. ):
Very touching bit, this. From "I thought I knew my Watson" to his worry at the end there. The fact that he used Watson's first name in his delirious state shows just how vulnerable he was here. Aww. I love these two. Such good friends. And JB as Holmes is so amazing. :)
@GordyLake Well Sherlock Holmes wasn't a real person lol, but this is taken unedited from an episode of what is considered the best TV adaptation of the Sherlock Holmes stories.
Holmes yells out "John!" at the end of this clip, not "Done!", as some subtitles would have you believe, because he was reaching out to Watson, his friend, by yelling his first name, something the professional Holmes wouldn't do
@prolifeprincess He got sick of the slicked back hair and cut it himself (Without asking the directors, and man were they mad.) I'm sure you can tell what a bad job he did in the latter ones that looks like a dog chewed it off. I don't know why the poor darling didn't just ask to not have it slicked back. Ah well :) I love him anyways, bad hair cut and all. <3
@Starryvideos idiot! he did it because he was despite for human realization! he was going through with drawl from cocaine and not working he needed to feeling something other than boredom
The only time in the entire series where he calls him "John" and not "Watson". Always thought it odd calling each other by their last names anyway, although that's what they did in the stories.
This was probably the stupidest thing Sherlock Holmes ever did. "I think this powder might be an exotic poison that has killed two people and seriously injured two more. To test my theory I think I'll expose Dr. Watson and myself to a half-dose of the substance in a secluded cottage far away from any possible help, and without telling anybody what I'm doing."
@AnacreoninHeaven Holmes was going through withdrawal fro cocaine and not working. he chose to have something else stimulate his brain. have you ever been so intellectually board it hurts to think and all you can do is sleep but sleep is even too boring? that was what Holmes was going through.
@AnacreoninHeaven xDDDDD rofl wow....that made a lot more sense just watching it...and even /THEN/ it didn't make much sense at all!! I have to admit...not exactly Holmes' brightest moment U.U
As much as Brett is the definitive Holmes, Edward Hardwicke is equally the best Watson ever portrayed.
When other writers and actors attempt to make Watson out to be a bumbling fool, it makes me sick.
First of all, Holmes is far too educated and would never associate with an idiot. It wouldn't be logical.
Secondly, Watson was a studied medical doctor and a surgeon in the army. Only an idiot would portray Watson as anything less than the wise and adventurous assistant that Hardwicke gives us
Have you watched the russian series? It really is very good- I'm a staunch JB fan and agree entirely with the Watson-Is-Not-An-Idiot argument, and these guys are VERY GOOD...
He doesn't really go crazy, the freaky poison stuff makes him hallucinate. This was a very weird episode of Sherlock Holmes, very creepy where it shows what it did to the first people. I wouldn't want that stuff in my fireplace :o
They didn't do the whole thing, instead incorporating part of the story into their adaptation of The Mazarin Stone. JB was ill and not in it, but even when they thought he would be, they STILL didn't include that wonderful moment. I can't understand why myself. I'm with you, I think it's a splendid snapshot of Holmes in a different light!
Exact-tic-tacly! The Three Garridebs moment is one of the very few where we get to see Holmes might love Watson as much(AS A FRIEND) as Watson loves him!
I heard "John" the first time I saw it. Then I watched it with subtitles and they said "done" so I thought I had misheard it. Later I read somewhere else that Jeremy had gotten some complaints from the purists for having Holmes call Watson by his first name. Jeremy defended his decision by saying that Holmes had been drugged and half out of his head, and in that situation he would call Watson 'John' and that he did it to show that Holmes is not a heartless machine.
"It was worth a wound-it was worth many wounds- to know the depth of loyalty and love which lay behind that cold mask. The clear, hard eyes were dimmed for a moment, and the firm lips were shaking. For the one and only time I caught a glimpse of a great heart as well as of a great brain. All my years of humble but single-minded service culminated in that moment of revelation."
The more I think about it, the more miffed I am that Brett and Hardwicke never shared that exchange.
I know exactly what you mean! That has to probably be one of if not my favourite quote from any of the Sherlock Holmes stories (and I've read them all!) And as Jerermy and Hardwicke were in my eyes the quite essential and best Holmes and Watson ever, I too wish they had of had this exchange of words!
yes if only Watson did not just write it but also told Holmes about his thoughts it will surely be very very very dramatic. Good thing there was that "Garrideb" to make the scene. (I've read them all too)
@RenaissanceWomanNY They combined my two favourite episodes, The Mazarin Stone and The Three Garridebs (the MS because Holmes is so badass is that and the TG because the Watson-Holmes moment), and took Homes out of it... I will never get over it...
@Ramigurl I'm trying to! :) I have this really old awesome Sherlock Holmes complete book that I got from a big book sale. I want to be careful with it. And I have school to do too... :)
I like Watson yelling at Holmes, it is a far more believable(and human) reaction than just saying, "It is my greatest joy and privlige to help you." Holmes calling Watson "John!" was pretty sweet.
Agreed. Not even Watson is patient enough to say something so banal after his best friend could have gotten the both of them killed or institutionalized- even if it is in the interest of justice.
