  • I love the part where Jimmy Carr explains Goth and Emo music and the only reaction is "...What?"

  • As hilarious as QI is, I'd rather you lot didn't joke about self harm, it's a serious problem.

  • @QueenOfTheAubergines

Rule #1. If it's funny it's probably offensive.

  • im not emo im goth, we hunt emos for sport

  • OMFG, so funny! (and yet só not true... xD All goths I know just want to hug people, and be friends with every single person that doesn't spit on them, and they like kitties and puppies and birds. =P) QI is só cool, to bad that there aren't any good shows like this in the Netherlands. And everytime I see Jimmy Carr, I think "does this rag smell like chloroform to you?" xD

  • jimmy is on it! respect lol

  • Emos want to kill themselves, and goths want to kill everyone else.

    How eloquent :)

Put them both in the same room and we all know who the survivor would be. Emos are what happens when natural selection fucks up and the genetic dead ends reach adulthood. At least they have the courtesy to remedy that mistake of their own volition. Which is something, I guess.

  • "I was an Emu for a while."

Oh Alan, you never fail to crack me up XD

  • There's a girl in my daughter's school who does her best to be as Goth as she can. Which is funny because it's a VERY small, extremely conservative private school with a very strict dress code. She does the best she can, though. ;)

  • what's the painting called?

  • @TheFallenangelme American Gothic by Grant Wood.

  • Jimmy Carr said My Bloody Valentine is an emo band. Idiot.

  • I was an Emu for a while as well... it stopped when someone pointed out to me that Emus only lived in Aus and I was living in Hampshire.

  • Goths think they are dead.

    Emos wish they were dead

  • ..Wow, As a Goth of 15 years I must say I'm astonished to find out that Jimmy knows bands like Fields Of the Nephilim lol

  • @Dungarth You've been a goth for 15 years? Wow...

  • Comment removed

  • And they're all wearing black.

  • I think Jimmy means My Chemical Romance, My Bloody Valentine are a shoegazing band.

  • The simple fact that a man of Jimmy Carr's age knows, even the slightest, difference between bands of these genre's is amazing. Who gives a shit if Death Cab aren't emo - Death Cab sucks either way; so do any of the bands that he mentioned.

  • jimmy just picked some bands with emo-sounding names! death cab arent emo

  • im trying to find that QI clip where they talk about the legal drinking age for children in britian. ive seen it before but can't find it now can some one give me a link please ?

  • @Daleksaresupreme1 Is it this one ? watch?v=IHrZ52KIobo

  • @894utube thanks (:

  • MY BLOODY VALENTINE AREN'T EMO

  • @goldensloth7 its probably the most emo sounding band

  • @SirrSnowman youre probs thinking of bullet for my valentine, they are shit, whereas my bloody valentine is more akin to a smashing pumpkins crowd (involving emo, but not mainly)

  • Comment removed

  • wow, first time Jimmy Carr's ever been quite likeable, though My Bloody Valentine are shoegaze

  • @madjack18 Let's be honest, if you're gazing at your shoes during the music, you're pretty emo.

  • Love Jimmy at 1:14

  • My friends went through a goth phase that I skipped. It meant a period of time in which we'd go out somewhere and people would stare at me like I was the strange one in my jeans and t-shirts ^^

  • @MintyInTheSky

if it was a phase it was emo not goth. goth is a lifestyle not a one off thing :)

  • I wish my grass was emo, that way it would cut itself. :)-

  • @mrkingid Self harm jokes aren't funny.

  • @ChloeLuvsYouTv Yeah, they are. Hilarious in fact.

  • @ChloeLuvsYouTv That one actually kind of is.

  • @mrkingid Thanks man, you made my day :D

  • Sue Perkins isn't funny, she's not unfunny, but not funny enough to be a comedian

  • I am painting my toilet black - am gonna have a goth toilet-bathroom

  • @finehomemadewine I did that and put luminous stars on the ceiling. Lovely for taking a bath but the landlord wasn't very happy.

  • @Easyandy100 That is very nice, I had a bit similar idea for the toilet, only instead of stars I chose the phosphorescent beetles. Landlords are nuisance, no sense of style usually :-).

  • @finehomemadewine I did have a landlord in 1997 that wore a shell suit whilst wearing shoes. I thougt that was quite stylish. Turned out he had a past as an armed robber and he punched me once.

  • Comment removed

  • Is it a coincidence that they're all wearing black?

  • @872463051 i'm sure they were told to wear black beforehand

  • My Bloody Valentine has never EVER been associated with emo (in fact they were remarked on for their complete lack of emotion in their songs and performances). He definitely means Bullet for my Valentine. I like Jimmy but find it kinda embarrassing to see him here act superior while make this glaring error. (But then again I'm obsessed with mbv and my skin crawls when people make this mix-up and label them emo.)

  • @monkeypeas He could have meant My Chemical Romance.

  • @monkeypeas dont label anything, fuck that, just listen to music for what it is not what its meant to be

  • Jimmy knows his goth from his emo!!! lol!!! ^-^ Xxxx

  • Is Jimmy Carr wearing mascara or something?

  • Love Jack Dee!

"I was a goth for a while. I was asked to leave because I was just too miserable."

  • LOVE Jack Dee's 'what??' reaction to Jimmy Carr's explaination

  • When I was 12 my dad asked me what colour I wanted my room painting, so I chose two shades of purple, brightest orange woodwork and a glans penis pink ceiling. He was meant to say don't be so stupid, you're having beige. But he went and did it. The bastard. Parents never understand.

  • I think it's awesome that Jimmy Carr actually knows the difference between the two. Instead of Jack who clearly only knows the extreme stereotype.

  • my bloody valentine? he means bullet for my valentine?

  • "When did the hand come out?" was a reference to Rod Hull, a comedian who played an animal handler of some kind, carrying an Emu (puppet), big in the 70s and 80s.

  • Think he means Bullet For My Valentine LMAO!!! XD

  • @lauralovesjohnny no he definitely means My Bloody Valentine

  • 1:54

  • Wait, Goths had dyed hair, shitty "actually fucking awesome" music, punk clothes?

    OH MY GOODNESS.

    my friends are right.

    I'M GOTH! Stephen likes me(:

  • @melgboom

Don't put yourself into a stereotype, seriously just be yourself.

Sick and fucking tired of people that go "I'M SO EMO XD SO RANDUMB"

  • what does emu mean?

  • @shingblu flightless bird from australia. Smaller than an ostrich.

  • @Wyrmshadow

Not only is it smaller than an ostrich, it's also larger than a colibri and greener than a penguin! It also has more legs than most snakes.

  • @leckerwurstbrot Neither penguins nor emus are green. Emu's are brown.

  • @Wyrmshadow

Certainly up for debate, as well as entirely beside the point - being that calling a bird smaller than the largest flightless bird is just a wee bit redundant :)

  • @leckerwurstbrot only slightly smaller.

  • @shingblu

It's a bird. Kinda like an ostrich, only uglier.

  • watch 1:54 over and over again..

  • No one thinks it's ironic how they talk about Goths and they all wear dark clothes?

  • @TheHeroInDisguise that was the point...

  • im a happy goth :L i think,, i dont rebel

  • i got called emu but im a goth ^^

  • Great way to get kids to watch this

  • Haha. My grandad calls me Emu ^_^

  • Can't believe there aren't any comments saying how good 0:13 is. Seems like an easy one for thumbs up as well.

  • 1:13 - Jimmy sounds rather turned on! lol Xx

  • I think he meant bullet for my valentine when he said my bloody valentine

  • what episode was this

  • Ugh, it makes me cringe when people think that goth is pasty white face, baggy black clothing, etc. Oh, and saying My Bloody Valentine is emo - shame on him.

  • @jordanprincessai 'Cept he said PUNK clothing.

But Jimmy Carr go the music right ;D.

  • My Bloody Valentine and Death Cab for Cutie aren't emo bands.

MBV are a shoegaze/noise band, and one of the most respected and innovative bands of the 80s and 90s.

I think he may have them confused with Bullet for My Valentine (a crappy Welsh emo band).

Jimmy Carr does not know his stuff.

  • @nicktenenbaum wow, bullet for my valentine are not crappy (however they are welsh), you start acting all intellegent then go and pose your own opinion into stuff which doesnt need to be said, and clearly, you dont know this stuff either,

  • @nicktenenbaum what the hell is wrong with the welsh!? Admittedly i hate bullet for my valentine but ah well...

  • @MizLuvOranges I haven't got a problem with the Welsh at all; I live in Wales.

  • @nicktenenbaum ooo sorry =) I'm quater Welsh :L

  • @nicktenenbaum What a coincidence, my Grandpa is Welsh. I hate to point out an old stereotype, but apparently I should be able to sing, because everybody on his side of the family can/could... Useless bit of info for you :p

  • I wasn't expecting Jimmy Carr to know the difference between Goths and Emos. He has now earnt respect from me. His put downs on Jack Dee were funny too.

  • Which series is this from? And why are there only 3 series available on DVD? I love this show =)

  • I don't mind either, as long as they grow out of it by the time they're 20, then it's just looks depressing and desperate!

  • Was it "Black Shirts On Blokes Day" on QI this time round?

  • @bitchezdontknow Facist theme?

  • Fields of Nephilium? Jimmy Carr knows Fields of Nephilium? I love him even more.

  • Jimmy Carr, you just sky-rocketed in my book of cool people.

"It's like being on a show with your dad." XD

  • Woa.... Jimmy Carr sure knows his stuff! I'd love to meet him at a concert, lol.

  • @peagleuck

They said they liked goths and emos.

    Idiot.

  • @peagleuck god were you not paying attention- first words out of Stephen Frys mouth were "I like goths, I have to say", Jimmy Carr named some bands that made it pretty clear he knows the genres.

I hearby deem you too stupid to watch QI

  • @EmmaB3545 Don't, Its educative!

  • @EmmaB3545 hereby, rather than hearby. :P

  • @FrisianDude correcting a year old spelling mistake? really?

  • @EmmaB3545 Yep, so it seems.

  • @FrisianDude Ok, just checking there :P

  • My Bloody Valentine? The late 80s /90s shoegaze/indie band? Emo? News to me Jimmy Carr :P

(I'm pretty sure he meant the shitty emo band Bullet for my Valentine, though)

  • @Supaduck0 u are a moron, emo is just a style and bullet for my valentine is a very talented band

  • Really top shelf comedy, personable, real, and relevant!

  • I like the fashion, but I'm too positive to fall into anything that they've said.

  • I love jimmy's little groan when jack says "rubbish music"! It's fantastic!

  • goths and emos are a look for crying out loud all it is is a fucking hair style a look and music and 2 diffenet types so stop going on about it if you know fuck all about

  • Gothic punk came about in the early 80's and had more to do with Nick Cave and Bauhaus than a bunch of dumb teenagers with black umbrellas and frankenstein boots.

  • i wonder what episode this is from....

  • @Centuria13 Series G (Gothic)

  • hehe interesting discusion x

    Stephen's looking good xx

  • Jimmy Carr looks so skinny.

  • i had to pause this video to watch QI on tv : )

  • Carr surely meant to say My Chemical Romance there, not My Bloody Valentine. Will the Internet forgive him?

  • LOL Jack Dee looks so miserable like he'd rather be at home watching the show instead of being on it!

Isn't the guy on the left side jonathan creek??

  • Yes, but mostly he's Alan Davies. He's the only permanent panelist on QI -- the other three seem to be selected from a pool of about 20 of the British panel-guest set (like carr, dee, mitchell, brydon, locke, jupitus, bailey, andy hamilton, rich hall, brand, clive anderson, o briain, etc.)

  • alan davies:)

  • @ChannelRiyya yes, and jack dee is miserable, thats his act

  • My Bloody Valentine are not an emo band, Jimmy Carr does not know what he's talking about.

  • @shevville Oh, semantics! Is it really important that we should be so eager to put everything in a box? People like certain bands and certain images but wouldn't it be wonderful if it was left at that? It all just seems so very exclusive, always trying to divide one another based on taste. There are more important things in life!

  • @bertiethetoupee4

That's not the point i was making. My Bloody Valentine are not associated with emos at all. I suspect he was getting them confused with Bullet for My Valentine are some other crap like that.

  • what? i dont even like them, but they certainly arent "emos"

  • niether are death cab for cutie.......

  • emo is technically any music that expresses emotion... but the term emo past few years has been adapted to... essentially... whiny kid music. In short... which is pretty much true.

Goth is pretty much an expression of the dark side of love without all the "i neeeeed you giiiiirl" kinda shit... listen to TYPE O NEGATIVE, they're one of the biggest Goth bands around, though not REALLY goth, but they heavily borderline it, and they're the only band in that genre worth listening to!

  • The way Jimmy Carr says "cutie" is nice.

  • I agree with Protagonists choice of telly but he forgot Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy

  • Stephen Fry likes Goths. This makes me happy :)

  • @Ravenixrising I'm happy that I'm not the only one who was happy about that.

  • Watching Jimmy Carr point out the difference between the Sisters of Mercy and Death Cab to Jack Dee may be one of the highlights in my (admittedly a bit dull) life

  • @BentonRox I would like to know if he just read the Wikipedia articles on "Goth"/"Gothic" before the show, or if he already knew that. It would be quite funny if it turned out he had been a goth as a teenager, wouldn't it? He does seem to be the only one there who knew what he was doing with that eyeliner.

  • @BentonRox Death Cab to Jack Dee?

  • Jimmy knows his stuff! :D

  • Wow, Jimmy Carr actually knows what he's on about. I am impress :D

  • : )

  • Looking forward to this week's episode! I love Stephen's enthusiasm he has in almost everything^^

  • Haha, err, My Bloody Valentine I think was an error. My Chemical Romance he meant. Death Cab For Cutie aren't stereotypical emo, either. Brilliant band.

  • @PaulyPlz Death Cab have such an emo name though, I didn't check them out for a while because it sounded so pretentious :L

also, like the 'cute is what we aim for' ref in there somewhere, very good

  • What's the "Cute is where we aim for" reference? I don't know much about them. If you mean Death Cab's name it's a song by a satirical band in the 60s.

  • yeah, but for the generic kid who wouldn't know that (ie. me two years ago) it sounds quite pretentious.

  • LOVE JIMMY !!!!!!!!!

  • this is actually better than Mock The Week now!!!

  • most things are better than mock the week to be honest :P

  • @hollium I quite like Mock the Week.

  • it's alright but it gets a bit bland, especially since frankie left and andy parsons has tried to step up the role. alistair mcgowan's andy parsons impression (from live at the apollo currently on iplayer) is spot on.

  • i thought jack dee was clive anderson for a while then!

  • shut the FUCK UP AND WATCH

  • Cant find it on Iplayer! BAWNN :(

  • It's not on until this Friday

  • not been broadcast yet

  • I am not looking forward to my parents seeing this, as I am considered 'emo' myself.

  • I think it's because you want novacaine

  • look deep inside yourself and ask if this is a good thing.

  • @jeremyfinch troll!!!!!

  • @jeremyfinch Well troll'd, sir. Had me going until halfway through.

  • Cheerio? Holy crabpipes....

Just so you know love- it IS scripted (for the most part) and Stephen Fry is a Very grand host of this show, in my submission. He's the only reason I watch it. When he does makes jokes they're pretty damn good and he's fully of interesting wittisms, facts and thoeries that usually enlightens the reader :D He's epic :P but yeah BRITISH KING!

  • i love this show!!! i like the QI Xl! i find it funny yet i learn things... schools should take a leap out of Stephen's book!! :)

  • are all the british shows funnier than the american, they seem to be. All we got in america now is reality shows

  • @dravarian26 depends on taste but I personally believe that most are better. :)

  • @dravarian26

It's the same here, back to back reality TV, it's awful!

Consider yourself lucky you dont have the Jeremy Kyle show in the US *shudders*

If youre interested, look up Red Dwarf, Blackadder and Father Ted. Three of my favourite UK TV shows.

    Red Dwarf is awesome!

  • Jeremy Kyle is actually going to do a show in the US. Maybe he'll stay there and we'll never have to watch him again!........or they'll probably show a US version of his show on ITV2 :(

  • @dravarian26 We still have the Simpsons.

  • @dravarian26 Trends change. But also, you probably see only the best of Brit-comedy. We have some awful TV in the UK, possibly American-inspired. Possibly not.

(IMO) Best American TV - The Wire. Worst American TV - Married With Children.

  • @dravarian26

If you like this then you'll love something called Mock The Week
