Came across this "OSTROV" unexpectedly. What a good film, was funny in some places. Nice to know monks have humore also and at times lose patience. it's very difficult to walk the walk.

This movie is good proof that Russians too cam make beautiful movies.

This is great film.It represent the spiritual connection between God and man.It's good piece of work.

@difficultjuggernaut Well, I am no chauvinist, but why do you need proofs that Russians can make good movies? I think that Russian (or rather Soviet) cinema is no worse than that of any other country. Although, of course, since the 1990s the quality has definitely gone down. The Island is, alas, a rare exception.

@koshka435 Whell ,here on television,there is just holiwood movies.I dond doubt in soviet cinema,like Andrey Tarkovskiy.There are geniouses too.

Also,one of the best Russian movies ive seen is Ѕвезда.Поздрав ;)

russia has many movies hollywood is not capable off. however some of them, only russians can understand e.g. irony of fate is a movie no foreigner can ever truly enjoy, even though it is my favourite movie of all time.

@woodyaan there is no canonized way for exorcism. There are two sermons that are used very often (The prayers -or curses- os St Vasile the Great and the Prayer of St Ciprian) but there is no canonised way. It is only prayer, confessions (of both the possessed and his family), eucharist. You are very much mistaken.

I got the movie recently from a friend of mine, but only in Russian, without the subtitles. I didn't understand much, but I loved it, now I like it even better. There is always a deeper level of why things happen.

This is such an incredible and memorable film...a masterpiece of interaction between the main characters: Anatoly,Filaret and Jov.The additional players add a complexity and sublety to their roles...truly amazing work.I watch it repeatedly and find layers of nuance each time.Pavel Lungin's newest work TSAR features Petr Mamonov as Ivan Grozny,and pits two widely varied views of faith against each other.Fascinating films!

Enjoyable film....sleeping on coal next to a furnace is certainly roughing it or in this case paying your 'dues' to God.. I just wonder, at the end how did the admiral know the man he shot ?
