I also downloaded the windows xp service pack 2 and 3 about 300mbytes size at 1.2Mbps in virtualbox at the same time surfing the web in ubuntu 11.10, no web surfing slowdown, so the virtualbox works very well splitting resources between linux and windows xp home. Even if you have a pentium 4 3.2 to 3.8ghz it should still run fine but dual core cpu is just perfect.
so hit ctrl-alt and delete to restart the whole system. Linux may be free and sometimes runs faster than windows but it is still so damn buggy on the desktop. Be careful what you download and use for ubuntu it may bring gnome or kde to a halt. If you have a powerful machine just download a windows xp iso and install it in the free virtualbox. I'm using an old windows xp home disc that i purchased a very long time ago. Don't wait for netflix to come to linux desktop.
Linux is still buggy and prone to crashes compared to windows 7 which i only experienced 1 bsod from the kworld driver when i unplugged and plugged back in the kworld tv adapter into the usb slot. I ran clamtk in ubuntu 11.10 and the whole gnome froze, nothing worked. the only thing to do was hit atl-f2 to go into shell mode and stop the clamtk but instead i did sudo gdm stop which ended the graphics driver but then i could no longer use the shell it did not take any commands anymore.
who cares. I just created a windows xp virtualbox in ubuntu 11.10 and installed sp3 and all updates. I installed sliverlight and now running netflix inside the virtualbox. It's fast no performance problems. ps3,roku all run linux OS and use their own custom drm for streaming netflix. I think microsoft and netflix has some arrangement not to have netflix on the desktop. my machine: intel core 2 duo 2.4ghz 4mbyte shared cache, 3gig ddr2 667mhz ram, geforce 9600gt.

Distributed development sometimes could be so back firing. Intel sandy bridge hd graphics and amd or nvidia graphics has failed in kernel and ubuntu itself. It neither supports HD 3000 nor installs priority driver without error. In total Linux has failed to either support old hardware(32-bit p4 old without graphics) or the newer ones. First of all it will take generations for these supports to come, if it does, within few months it will be called old. This is why the pendulum ticks at around 1%.

@Crazyteen28 depends on what you're planning to do in college. if you're going to be doing any programming in Visual Studio, a VM might not be the best option. if your professors require you to use MS Office products, and refuse to take Libre/OpenOffice documents (even .doc from it), you can run Win in a VM and use MS Office there, but it can be a hassle to start up a VM just to do some doc processing.
It might be worth buying something with Win preinstalled and putting Linux on it.
@Crazyteen28 I will say, though, if you're looking to run Linux on something, make sure you're prepared to either fight with graphics, or use the Intel integrated, because most newer laptops come with Nvidia or ATI preinstalled in a hybrid mode with integrated Intel graphics on the CPU. Found that one out the hard way. Even if it's not something like Nvidia Optimus (hybrid on purpose), a discrete card can pair with a Core i3/i5/i7 integrated GPU and, in Linux, the Intel takes over. :/
@Crazyteen28 if i can suggest do like me (had same situation year ago), I'm using windows since 1999 so im a windows user for 12 years now and i didnt have a windows that didnt crash/virused/blue screen/... anyways other than Win7 they kinda suck,so i tried linux pardus distro 4 months ago and i was amazed how good it was, and so far no problems :) i would reccomend (also i have VM Win only for office), try infinetlygalactic or sneekylinux channels if u need some more info, gl hf choosing :)
@mikethedj4 10 hours? what sort of hardware are you rendering that on, and what software? With kdenlive on my quad core AMD system (for the most part it's not even using all 4 cores of it) I can render a 10-minute video in about 15 minutes. With the effects I'm using for newer videos, like Contrast and Saturation, it's taking quite a bit longer, so this video took about 45 minutes to render.
@thisweekinlinux Wax 2.0 on windows, and using Wine, and when I use Blender it takes awhile as well, cause of the zooming and panning effects, or if I take screenshots, and animate everything incorporating the audio it takes a long time. Cinelerra was good, but I just had nothing, but problems, and Kdenlive I had issues with. Might just be bad hardware though. Gonna get me a Macbook, and the Chromebook. (Thinking on the Blackberry Playbook too)
@mikethedj4 it could always be something to do with the software. I'm not familiar with Wax, but I know blender, being a 3d rendering solution, probably does take a while longer to do things.

Also random question, I have a friend with a netbook I recently Ubuntu-ified (W7 starter is so damn awful, can't change the background wallpaper? wtf?) and it's a touch screen netbook, and it has a multitouch touch screen. Do you have any idea how to enable the multitouch functionality, everything else works PERFECTLY including standard touch screen.
@kn100kn100 I believe there are some settings in the xorg.conf file (or if there isn't an xorg.conf file, you may have to create one) to enable multitouch. if you go to the terminal and look at "lsusb" (I think, perhaps it's lspci, but I think because it's a touch screen, it's considered a USB device) you should see the touch screen listed in there, and from there we can figure out what needs to be in your xorg.conf to make it work.

@thisweekinlinux I'm back on Arch and love it, but I don't like GNOME 3 .. I tried it and out and it's ok, It's missing a lot and not just because it's a major release but because by design they simplified it too much. I moved to something else for now.. like OpenBox.. messing around with that and XFCE, Rat Poison, and I want to try out a few more like DWM, XMonad, Awesome. I can't believe GNOME 3 pushed me completely away to a Tiler haha, or even a minimalistic stacker (OpenBox).
For the Google laptop, is that 100MB limit for access anywhere? And you can continue using your own wall connection for "free" (no extra charges, I mean), correct?
@emersonhitech Well, thats what i like about it.. It doesn't try too hard to impress. It boots faster than anything i've tried and is extremely fast and lighweight..
It just feels stable and like you can do whatever you want with it. I also think that OpenBox is fantastic. i love the shortcuts etc.
It's not super cool or anything. But it gives you what you need and does it well!

I'm not sure if you know or not, or how old this "news" is, but the developer for Regnum Online (an MMO) ported their game to be supported on Linux. As far as I know, this is the first MMORPG that's officially supported on Linux.

@jeff30458 either they put out two different generations of cr-48, or I got ripped off then. :P I've got one with the Intel N455, which is a single core, underpowered Atom processor.
@EnavSounds Unity is just a different shell for Gnome 3. Ubuntu 11.04 actually uses Gnome 3 right now, just with the Unity shell rather than the normal Gnome Shell.
@EnavSounds Ubuntu 11.04 is still Gnome, it's Gnome 2.x.x. For the first time it has a Unity shell on top of it. Which is why you see a dock on the left. From 11.10 onwards it will be Gnome 3 with the Unity shell. So it shouldn't look that different but under the hood it's a pretty huge upgrade.
BTW Google released a Go SDK for App Engine in the Google I/O, since Go is a system / general purpose programming language which also works with gcc 4.6; I think these are good news for linux users.
@pedrojaviero Oh, and I forgot to mention, someone asked Rob Pike if Go is coming for Android and Rob said "it would be great, but I'm not allowed to talk about it". I think there will be good news in the next few months.
@Ditherliss a REAL version? ChromeOS is not even a derivative of Ubuntu. My little netbook runs Joli OS and it loves it. I think it's the perfect OS for such a small computer.

On top of that, there is a built in screen reader called ChromeVox for Chrome OS which is fantastic because this is the first out of the box talking computer solution I've seen for under $1,000, and to make it maintenance free (as most maintenance software is hated by screen readers), this is a real plus for myself & others.

@thisweekinlinux I'm back on Arch and love it, but I don't like GNOME 3 .. I tried it and out and it's ok, It's missing a lot and not just because it's a major release but because by design they simplified it too much. I moved to something else for now.. like OpenBox.. messing around with that and XFCE, Rat Poison, and I want to try out a few more like DWM, XMonad, Awesome. I can't believe GNOME 3 pushed me completely away to a Tiler haha, or even a minimalistic stacker (OpenBox).

For the Google laptop, is that 100MB limit for access anywhere? And you can continue using your own wall connection for "free" (no extra charges, I mean), correct?

@emersonhitech Well, thats what i like about it.. It doesn't try too hard to impress. It boots faster than anything i've tried and is extremely fast and lighweight..
It just feels stable and like you can do whatever you want with it. I also think that OpenBox is fantastic. i love the shortcuts etc.
It's not super cool or anything. But it gives you what you need and does it well!

I think that what holds ubuntu back is not the operating system itself, or just derivative if you want to get picky, i'd say that it just simply lacks alot of the popular software people want.

I switched from Kubuntu to Debian and then to Gentoo (because it's summer vacation, and my car is in the shop so I wasn't going anywhere anyways! XP)
But I feel kind of like Ubuntu is getting a little clogged up, Unity was kind of the last straw so to speak.

@lucatechxx Ubuntu makes more than 1 desktop option. Logout, then use the login option to choose from the available desktops, such as gnome 2.

I'm not sure if you know or not, or how old this "news" is, but the developer for Regnum Online (an MMO) ported their game to be supported on Linux. As far as I know, this is the first MMORPG that's officially supported on Linux.

You mentioned something about a reliance on Silverlight for netflix, not sure if this would work (I just don't use netflix, and haven't run into issues where I'd need Silverlight), but there is an open source solution called moonlight on the mono-project website

the cr-48 has a dual cole processor, I know this because I put ubuntu on it and checked the usage and it had meters for both processors

@EnavSounds Unity is just a different shell for Gnome 3. Ubuntu 11.04 actually uses Gnome 3 right now, just with the Unity shell rather than the normal Gnome Shell.

@EnavSounds Ubuntu 11.04 is still Gnome, it's Gnome 2.x.x. For the first time it has a Unity shell on top of it. Which is why you see a dock on the left. From 11.10 onwards it will be Gnome 3 with the Unity shell. So it shouldn't look that different but under the hood it's a pretty huge upgrade.

BTW Google released a Go SDK for App Engine in the Google I/O, since Go is a system / general purpose programming language which also works with gcc 4.6; I think these are good news for linux users.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY to you both! :D Also the ChromeBooks will be available for purchase for between $349 to $499 depending on which device and configuration you go with. On top of that, there is a built in screen reader called ChromeVox for Chrome OS which is fantastic because this is the first out of the box talking computer solution I've seen for under $1,000, and to make it maintenance free (as most maintenance software is hated by screen readers), this is a real plus for myself & others.
