The song was first performed by the Michalis Patrinos rebetiko band in Athens, Greece in 1927. As with almost all early rebetika songs (a style that originated with the Greek refugees from Asia Minor in Turkey), the song's actual composer has never been identified, and its ownership rested with the band leader. The melody was most likely composed collaboratively by the band, as was often the case at the time; the initial lyrics were almost certainly written by Patrinos himself.
I love youtube because of all the idiots debating back and forth.
As an ancient beast once said, "Struggle through misconception and fear the truth for as a mind is only that of a whole when truth is told." Anyhow as this isn't the original song and the reality is that the song was made so far back in time that several countries thinks it originates from them. It is impossible to say where it originates from.
My apalogies to the downloder of this video about the interaction with a racist bigot here. However, I have to speak the truth regardless. At least, I should have the right to correct few things up. Thanks.
@Fussinated Thanks for that explanation! That's awesome, I had no Idea that Dave Brubeck adapted Turkish music into his music. No wonder it sounds so amazing. I love a Pioneer.
@Hungry4Herb actually it's not turkish.it is taken from an old greek song of rebetiko style called Misirlou(means egyptia muslim girl) which was firstly performed in Athens in 1927 by Michalis Patrinos, who was a greek refuge from Minor Asia.
@novaera5 Actually, Greek still today play and dance with Turkish tunes, so the tune is definitely has Turkish character regardless where was it performed first.
@Fussinated its not turkish tune.the kind of music of the song is called rebetiko....which only Greeks were playing and still play. And we do not dancing to Turkish tunes please.Sometimes we dance tsifteteli(belly dance) which is Arab dance, but not turkish.
@novaera5 "Sometimes we dance tsifteteli(belly dance) which is Arab dance"
You guys are mazing, You claim Imam bayildi as Greek yet you can't tell its greek name sine there is none, You claim that Yoghurt is Greek yet you use the Turkish name, You call ciftetelli as Arabic but it is a Turkish tune, You call Misirlou (Misirlu how you say it) it is the broken form of Misirli meaning from egypt in Turkish, you claim baklava have no idea why you call it baklava. Why do you hate Turkish this much?
@Fussinated We don't claim imam bayildi as greek.as for the yoghurt we do have greek word for it....and its called Myzithra....and you know we are making myzithra since ancient years.we just use both words, but it doesn't mean that Turks invented yogurt.many countries makes their kind of yoghurts. Also i didn't say that the word Misirlou is greek.I said that the music is based on greek rebetiko. As for baklava Turks also took it from Arabs. We don't hate them. They still hate us.

Everyone in the world can trace roots back to somewhere other than America ---its America that embraces such a fertile enviroment for growth and new idea's---looking forward-- not to the past. A true melting pot of any and all, bringing their heritage and going forward ;););)
The penultimate surf instrumental tune of the early 60's. Who cares if its based on Middle Eastern music and that Dick has a Lebanese background. It rocks !! That's all that matters. There's a whole swag of fabulous early songs he did - both instrumental + vocal.
