I'm about to get into the 5th Gen battling scene and while I'm not new to the ins and outs of battling I have little actual battle experience. Is there a tier you would recomend I start in?

@SergeantBrowning Start in OU and learn how pokemon work together on your team before you do anything else. In OU, there are great examples of team synergies (defensive and offensive cores) and other roles (sweepers, clerics, walls, etc.) and learning what works and what doesn't as well as establishing for yourself what you like to play (offensive, stall, balanced...) will be easiest for you in OU.

Then when you get accustomed to how things work and you get bored, lulz around in the low tiers.

Random question, and keep in mind that the only competitive Pokemon battling experience I have is your videos - But at the end, when all you needed was Alakazam to live an extra turn, wouldn't you have been better to use some kind of non-attacking move (assuming you have it) so you didn't get Life Orb recoil, meaning the only way you would've died was absolute min/max or a crit?
