This Lady Shiva is obviously a far cry from that of her comicbook counterpart who doesn't wear a mask. Lady Shiva is most likely the deadliest assassin in the DC Universe but here they made a joke out of her who can barely hold her own fight.
@live4marilyn She couldn't. Because she was a super whiz with electronics and technology she created a device that could HELP her walk but only for short periods of time and it was excruciatingly painful. It was not perfected at the time but desperate times call for desperate measures. :)
I think Michelle Yeoh should have been cast as Lady Shiva, especially after seeing a showcase of her fight scenes recently and remembering Crouching Tiger. With a little makeup they could make her appear younger or older depending if they did a flashback or not. But the ill-fated WB 'Birds of Prey' show went a slightly lower-common denominator route by having Playmate Sung Hi-Lee portray the most dangerous martial artist in the DCU as a common thief.
lady shiva becomes 1 of the birds of prey in the comics!! n apparently is 1 of the best fighters in the DC universe oh n could some1 plz upload these episodes this is the only part ive ever seen of the entire sereis
To be honest i think those writers as well as the producers Mike Tollin and Brian Robbins were too busy playing with their disco sticks when Ashley Scott was prancing around in that underworld like outfit that Kate Beckinsale would wear. The writers do have a sense of humor, however. They have fun with the fact that these super heroines don't wear costumes and that, despite having millions of dollars worth of computer equipment in her home, Barbara Gordon has nothing to eat in her refrigerator.
This show could've been really great but they just made a few bad choices which sadly, put together, caused this show to fail. I think the idea of Harley taking centre stage from the Joker, Batgirl leading her own team without Batman and Huntress being involved are great ideas. However, they should've kept Barbara in the wheelchair, Huntress darker, involved more bat-villains and kept true to the character of Harley that we all know and love.
lies lies inever seen this but it looks like i sucks, have you read to comics, lady shiva is nothing like this and whos the random lady with short hair
Seconded! The first time I saw Underworld on the shelf at the video store, I picked it up thinking vaguely that it might be a BoP movie or the same actress or something.
In the shows, Birds of Prey, Batman is RETIRED and Robin is now, if I remember correctly, NIGHTWING, but he's havin' fun beating up bad guys in another city :)
Barbara was the best thing about this series, the actress really did the role justice. If they ever do a Batman movie with Batgirl/Oracle they should ask her.
As much as I'm hungry for superheroine fare, I have to agree. It didn't outright suck, but it was disappointing. For someone who read the comic from the beginning and really admired it in the Chuck Dixon years, I was bummed to see the WB pump up the melodrama and lose the slangy believable women that Chuck wrote. I may buy the DVD anyway, but I can't say I absolutely loved the series.
I would like to add to what you said: I think that there is the f/f writing because there is so much of the lesbian subtext in the comic book the show was based off of, so people like to write for that as well, bring plotlines and character twists from the comic as well as the show when it comes to putting their fic together.
That's very true. The comics really did bring people in, I think, though not as much as they could have because on the show, everything was Babs/Helena when the comics are mostly Babs/Dinah. But I've noticed quite a bit of that to varying extents, the mixing of the universes.
Fave show ever...but i hate how everyone turned it into a femslash show...none of them were lesbians....except gabby. so the fact that everyone seems to write helena/barbara pairings or dinah/helena pairings baffles me quite a bit. O well....i guess many of the fans were lesbians or gays?? No offense to whoever uploaded this, just an observation for everytime lately that i go on the fanfic sites or this site and see so many femslash things for birds of prey. it saddens me.
Really? Well, I appreciate your viewpoint on this. There was a very strong, almost dependant friendship undercurrent to the B/H interaction, which is I think where a lot of the femslashers came from. I don't identify as a lesbian, but I'm attracted to the f/f because of those strong friendship tones that lie under lesbian relationships, so this one caught me right off of the bat.
Though compared to different fandoms, BoP femslash fandom is tiny (there are a few very prolific authors, which is why it looks big), I do agree that there is little to no het content for BoP. I'd blame that on the fact that Barbara was already in a relationship and they introduced Reese as the romantic partner for Helena right away, so there was little time for the slow buildup/hinting that attracts shippers to a pairing.
Het probably would have picked up were the show to have gone longer, but femslash fandom is good with sticking with cancelled shows once subtext has been identified because of the disparity in the volume of shows that have such potential; we've got to take what we can get, which is why you see more femslash content while the het fans, who have plenty of choices, moved on a long time ago.
And no offense taken. I often feel the same way from the opposite side for various fandoms.
Actually, if based on the comics BoP there was femslash, but not quite open. The show kept the same "spirit" however wasn't a reason to spice the Internet up with the fics you're referring to. It's in the eyes of the beholder, I don't see the subtext due to years of comics reading. It's just not there. Batwoman in the other hand, she's "out". I agree with you was a great show. Have'ol recorded. Cheers.

According to executive producer Hans Tobeason, WB had "issues" with Oracle and her chair (what's more, they tried to freeze her out of the show altogether by limiting her screentime.

Michelle Yeoh looks older and could balance intelligence, sensuality (she was a former Miss Malaysia!) and danger very well.
