If you were to fight a actuall MMA fighter you would lose really fast, fighting is about the simplicity and the ability to deliver a quick and powerfull blow to the target, not about how well you can show boat, I have yet to find an actual capoeitra fight on youtube.

My teacher told me yesterday that this is what it is and also a martial art. He told me, that some time when Brazil had slave owners (don't know when this is) that they made the slaves dance and in order for the slaves to protect themselves against their masters, they would practice the dance and incorporate offensive moves.

its an art... not just any fighting style... its a DANCING FIGHTING art... they do make contact. but they dance more.. they dance and then while they're dancing they hit.... and mostly sweep eachother.. you have to work with your opponent in this style.. nice style.. but not the NICEST!

@nexus1g Only partially right, you are talking about the original style of Capoeira, Angola. This video for the most part depicts Capoeira Regional, the reinvented style by Mestre Bimba in the early 1900s. Capoeira regional has contact, sweeps, take downs, knees, elbows and even submissions in some schools. Mestra Bimba was influenced by styles such as judo, tae kwan do, karate and so on. Demonstrations are usually contact free, but training is done with contact.

@nexus1g The amount of contact varies between schools. Demonstrations don't often have contact because it just looks nicer and smoother lol. But in training at the academy and when 2 schools meet, there is much more contact. The idea of Capoeira is not to kill each other, that being said, it is up to the other person to get out of the way and sometimes when Capoeiristas are testing each other out or just having a biff they make it much harder an look to hit the other person.
