In two biographies, I've read that her German-born mother was partly Jewish. Most Swedes of her generation learned German in school as their first foreign language. Her German is understandable, though she speaks with a pronounced foreign accent. Moreover, her diction is somewhat nasal in tone, most likely traceable to her Stockholm upbringing, where the locals speak Swedish with a similar tone (compared to the rest of the country).

Her mother was German :). This is an early Third Reich film, though Bergman never identified at all with the Nazi movement. She just had a contract with UFA.

Ingrid Bergman was an actress whose face transcends language...which is basically an eloquent way of saying I don't speak German but love Ingrid Bergman.
