Wow! Very nice looking dome! My only concern would be that you glued (siliconed) it together. That would make it very difficult to replace the plastic when necessary. Awesome job! Thanks for sharing.
@jimginnyohio If all goes well, in a few years, the greenhouse film will be replaced with twin wall polycarbonate. Thanks for watching and for the compliments.
sweet dome..on my list of 1000 plans for someday! question. can you replace the poly the way its attached? i was thinking of using clear mylar for durability and Uv resistance what do you think.thanks..PS havent tried it but Minwax makes a Helmsman clear spar urathane UV stable spray...might protect poly.
@CheapEnergyIdeas In order to replace the poly, I would have to deconstruct the hexagon and pentagon panels. The plan though is to replace it with polycarbonate when the time comes which could be added without deconstruction. I'm not familiar with mylar so I can't really say. This poly is called TuffLite and is made specifically for greenhouses... 6 mil thichness, multilayers, and UV protection... also diffuses sunlight for the plants.
@johnkew Thanks dude, that tube in the video is caulk but I also glued the bear wood surfaces together too. I used a waterproof "Elmer's" type of glue for that. After the white caulk ran out, I switched to clear silicon. The window opener is made with a heat sensitive wax in the cylinder, no electricity. So far, they are working really well. I wasn't sure how big the dome was going to be... I just knew the diameter would be about 14 feet 10 inches
wow, Jim that dome looks fantastic, It's great to get the family involved in a project like this. I am sure there were ups and downs and lots of laughs that the kids will talk about for years to come.
phenomenal cover of this song. Even hubby came to listen and commented what a great singer you are,
@mommarox2 Hey Thanks ! The look of these geodesic domes was what attracted me. I could have built a hoop greenhouse but there is something about these domes. They just look so damn cool.. I figured I'd go for it. My nephew really had a great time helping me with the build. He was all excited heh heh Glad you like my Beatle cover, it's one of my all time favorite tunes. Those guys could write some music.
Congratulations on the excellence of BOTH projects--great dome, great cover! Do you know approximately how many hours the dome took to build and construct, from start to finish, once you had all the plans and materials? I'm curious.
@17drums Thanks man ! I didn't keep track and the time went by pretty quick. It took about a month so I'm guessing maybe 150 hours? For the wood, I used treated deck lumber 1 x 6 x 12 and ripped then into 1 3/4 wide strips. I had never used a table saw before now so there was a bit of a learning curve there too. I had level the ground... never did that before either. I learned a lot from this project. I still have to build raised beds and get the underground heating system goin
Turned out awesome Jim!!! Enjoyed the song cover too:)) You kids are adorable and it is something they will surely remember when they get older!! Thanks for sharing this with us and good luck with the growing my friend:)) *****
@Cameragirl803 Thanks Jane, really appreciate it. I was glad the weather let up while we were putting it together. My nephew had a lot of fun. He says it looks like a spaceship or something lol
@herbiesnerd Hey thanks Randy, it was good to finally put this thing up after all that preparation. I put my first test plants in today. I'm still working on installing a door too.
OK, first of all, great job on the Beatles cover! But maybe you should have done " 'Dome-o' Arigato, Mr. Roboto."
I can really appreciate the time and effort that went into this and you did a superb job. The same craftsmaship you show in your musical tributes was evident in the attention to detail and the end product. Very well done, and incredibly cool. "Dome-estic Bliss" at its finest.
@WeepingZeeGuitars hahaha good one... Mr. Roboto.... what were they thinking? It's good to finally have it done, for the most part at least. I'm still working on the door. Amazing how solid this thing is. Thanks for all the help and support.
@TheDigitalMafia I went into it, not really knowing what to expect but it turned out pretty good. There were a few "Oh Shit" moments during the building part but the vice grip clamps kicked ass.... amazing how solid it is. I'm still working on that damn door. Just got the side triangles done for it. Now if the rain will stop, I'll be able to put em in and get the rest done. Rain here since the end of August has been unbelievable.
@ScalerWave - Well now you'll have to build another one for the plants after you move the dirt out of this unique club house and move the toys in. lol 8O)
Jim - You might have already covered my questions elsewhere (but I'm too lazy to look): What is the life expectancy of that poly? Is it a special product? What about hailstorms? Very awesome and inspiring nonetheless.
@doctorcastille This product is called "Tuff Life" and is suppose to last at least 4 seasons. UV light is the major problem with plastic but it has UV protection as well as some other protective additives. I would like to have covered it in polycarbonate but the price is pretty steep. Hail? That's pretty rare here. It might mark it up but I think the poly would handle it. It's 6 mil thick and pretty tough. Glad you enjoyed it. This was a very interesting project.

That auto-window opener is cool! The whole thing is looking great - a lot bigger that I had imagined. Is the wood glue to keep it water tight?
Great job on the Beatles tune too!
