I make a lot less money at my union job then I did for non-union work, and I also have to pay union dues so it's a lot less.

By two-tier system, I mean that people will have the option to stay with a private insurer, or go with a govt. plan. That way, you can get immediate care for elective procedures.

We're opening a door with this, which will make it possible to pose an argument in favor of limiting people's unhealthy activities for the benefit of everyone.

Providing health care for everyone is different than requiring it, right now, the plan in congress does require you register for health insurance.

You've got to realize that under a publicly-funded system, there are patients who will take priority based solely on how severe their illness/problem is, keep that in mind.
Honestly, if I was in charge. I would propose a two-tier system (which I believe is actually what this bill proposes, correct me if I'm wrong). By two-tier system, I mean that people will have the option to stay with a private insurer, or go with a govt. plan. That way, you can get immediate care for elective procedures.

Hey, if Canada's system is so much worse than ours, then why hasn't their health care crisis driven them to try privitizing health care? Come to think of it, why is the rest of the developed world suffering this failed system instead of electing someone to office to end it? Could it be that the vast majority of people in those countries like their system, in spite of the higher taxes? France and Canada both have nearly 90% approval for their health care systems. If the overall cost is extremely high because America has unhealthy habits, the people who don't have such habits will become more vociferous in wishing others to curtail their unhealthy habits. I doubt this will happen immediately, but what about a few years down the road after the system is in place.

I usually agree with Cenk, but I'm not sure if I can on this issue. It is true that there aren't currently any 'health police', I think that Steele had a somewhat valid point. We're opening a door with this, which will make it possible to pose an argument in favor of limiting people's unhealthy activities for the benefit of everyone.
The current health plan may not include such a system, but it could put us on course down a slippery slope.

Second, my point is where do you draw the line? I am always being told I look malnourished even though I eat three meals a day and generally fairly healthy food. So do I count as malnourished or not? How do you decide who does?
