Wow! The first cell phones came out in 1991?! Awesome! They were so HUGE & bulky back then! I'll bet they cost anywhere from $500.00-$1000.00 when they first came out! Thankfully they've made them smaller & smaller through the years! I wonder how many of the original models people are still carrying around? Cell phone technology has come a long way, hasn't it?
@ChihuahuaboyDH Actually, cell phones had been out since I believe the 80s. Not many owned them until the late 90s/early 2000s. Cell phones were originally just used in cars.
This version lasted just 14 weeks? No wonder I missed seeing it back in 1991! Was this at about the same time those 1-900 ads popped up where someone could call to play an "at home" type version of "LMAD"? Monty Hall was almost 70 years young here! He still looks the same at 90!
@ChihuahuaboyDH This version actually lasted about 6 months, Bob Hilton hosted at the start, until NBC decided he wasn't "Good enough" and asked Monty to fire him and take ove himself, threatening cancellation if he didn't. Nothing against Monty, he IS Let's Make a Deal, but NBC should've given Bob a chance. At least CBS isn't screwing Wayne Brady over the way NBC screwed Bob over. Mr. Hilton should've warned Conan O'Brien about what to expect from them.
@johnissoevil I had no idea Bob Hilton hosted this version of "LMAD" from the beginning! Isn't he more associated with announcing various game shows rather than hosting? I like the current version of "LMAD". I hope Wayne Brady remains as host. He's doing a smashing job!
@ChihuahuaboyDH Hilton indeed is best known for announcing, but he's always wanted to host, and this was actually his third hosting job, the other two being the short lived 1977 Truth or Consequences revival and the Guiness Game in 1979.
This soundstage did not host "Superstar Television," now "American Idol Live." LMAD was taped in Soundstage One, where they taped "The All New Mickey Mouse Club." I know this because I was there, at LMAD, and afterwards went to "Superstar Television," which was in a completely different section of the park.
Wow! This show was usually taped at the then Disney/MGM Studios which is now Disney's Hollywood Studios and it was formerly "Superstar Television", but it's now the new home of the "'American Idol' Experience".
Also at Disney/MGM Studios during that time (late '90/early '91) was "The New Mickey Mouse Club" (or MMC). I don't know why I find that interesting, it just is for me.
@nextbarker Probably. He went natural between 1989 or 90 I remember he was still dying it brown when he had did the 1988 Variety Club Telethon in LA. but he gave up the dye a year later in a PM magazine interview (not about his hair but gameshows in general.)
On the following Monday - January 14, 1991 the LMAD time slot was replaced by Wheel of Fortune with Bob Goen (acquired from CBS which dropped it for Barbara DeAngelis' talk show), but then 2 days later the original GULF WAR started.
When he returned, it was already too late to save the show. When CBS cancelled Wheel, NBC saw an opportunity to regain the show, and they chose LMAD's slot for the show. Feud kicked LMAD '90's ass in the 10 am ratings the whole time.
More then likely, yes. When Pat left the daytime show two years earlier, that version never got the daytime numbers it did during the Woolery/Sajak eras. Goen was an improvement over Rolf, but everyone obviously had already said "Ah, forget it" by then.

Just cruious, why did Bob Hilton step down in the first place?
nextbarker 2 years ago
NBC thought that Bob was bringing in the ratings and in thier wisdom wanted Monty back.

@nextbarker Because he knew he sucked.

I love the cheesy sounding 80's intro music.
baconhead2008 2 years ago
@baconhead2008 It slightly resembles the music used from 1984-1986.

Did Monty appear in the 2003 revival? even more boring with Billy hosting.

Yes, Monty did appear in the 2003 revival... on the final episode of that version.

Was Monty the second game show host to let his hair turn grey unannounced?

Do you have Monty's first show of this incarceration?
nextbarker 3 years ago
Monty Hall was originally to be LMAD 1990 special guest host for 4 weeks and then for 8 weeks but his hosting lasted 14 weeks.
heine71 3 years ago 3
@heine71 Yeah, he of course is really the only one who has any business hosting "Deal" (sorry Bob, Billy, and Wayne!).

@disneyfan81 But Wayne Brady is thriving in the current CBS Let's Make a Deal as host!

Monty's voice and deal-making hasn't changed, yet it wasn't enough. Maybe it was the video screen or something...

Is that what also happened to Wheel of Fortune? Ratings were more on the Feud?

More then likely, yes. When Pat left the daytime show two years earlier, that version never got the daytime numbers it did during the Woolery/Sajak eras. Goen was an improvement over Rolf, but everyone obviously had already said "Ah, forget it" by then.

They probably were like, "Let's watch Family Feud instead. I heard Ray's pretty handsome."
And yes, I find Ray handsome.
Hondo20132 3 years ago
Well, there wasn't really as much studio space as there was in previous incarnations. That was one of the factors.
