You said that you "sized It" for your uncle. It's a leather strap on a deployant. Would you not just move the stud from one hole to the next? Maybe It's because you dont want to use any other hole but the one that fits your uncles wrist. Im thinking this Is no average leather strap, nor timepiece.
@chronomax1 That's exactly it.. I did not want to use any other hole but the one that fits his wrist. Brand new watch and strap, popped it out of the sealed plastic - didn't want to ruin the perfection! Also, when pushing it on the hole it requires some force and bending/manipulation of the strap.

you got ripped off, I got a timex at walmart for 15 bucks that keeps more accurate time! and i dont have to worry about breaking or losing it, I will just buy another one.
A scratch will not diminish the value of a watch, it all depends on the demand for the specific model, material of said model, and other certain attributes; either way, most watch freaks won't sell their watches, I don't sell mine for example. If you're buying one of these watches it's for yourself, and you won't be thinking about resale value at all.
the money is already spent when someone buys a watch for 42 clams, ppl have already gotten their saleries from it. so what he does with it i dont give two shits.
First thing you'll notice on a great watch is the silky smooth movement of second hand. This watch should have an above average bph. I have an automatic watch but it is not as smooth as that.
Although a high bhp is usual present on most higher end automatic watches, bhp doesent have to correspond with the quality of a watch. Some very good watches beat at lower bhp.
True, because that's the way it is.High bph watch needs more maintenance than an average bph watch. This includes lubrication because of the faster moving parts. However, they are more accurate because it divides time into finer increments. This is like the sports car of watches wherein a Ferrari , though it performs a lot better, will have more maintenance than a Honda Civic.
while watches with a 36000 bph are rare (from what I know, only Zenith's El Primero mvmnt and a few Grand Seikos have them), they are not necessarily "better" or more expensive than its slower-beating counterparts. For instance, Tag Heuer uses ETA movements that beat at 28800 bph while A.Lange&Sohne's watches beat at either 18000bph or 21600bph. Moreover, IWC's 7-day power reserve movement also beat at 21600bph. So, there isn't really any correlation between beat rate and quality or exclusivity
@bowcapp not necessarily better? what are you on? The El Primero movement, especially the chronograph, is regarded as the best mechanical chronograph movement ever made. designed in the 50's started selling in the 60's and is still made today.
@bobbymonks1 The El Primero is more accurate ( the chronograph can measure up to 1/10th of a second whereas a typical valjoux7750 is only able to measure up to 1/8th of a second) BUT does not mean that it is superior in all other aspects. I've personally handled my friend's Zenith Defy Open, while the El Primero is amazing, I wouldn't dare call it better than the movement found in Patek 5960 or the Lange Datograph.
@bobbymonks1 Furthermore, any watch aficionado will tell you that a faster beat rate is not always "better" especially when you take into account the non-technical factors such as level of finishing, decoration, durability, prestige, etc. Not hating on the El Primero, in fact I admire it but I am just saying that just because it is faster, doesn't mean that it is "better" than everything else on the market.
Very true, in the 70s Logines created movements in the 30,000 bph range which are higher than any other watch maker. The problem with high beat rate is it tends to wear the parts faster. So yes high beat rate does not equal quality.
It is true both the Lange 1 Moonphase and Glashutte Original PanomaticLunar are exquisite watches. My pref would go for the Lange 1 purely as it is thinner by approximately 15%. On the other hand, the Lange 1 is not yet automatic, and this is what I admire. Tough choices ;-)
For the Datograph, I have had the chance of holding one. Looking through the back sapphire just gave me chicken pots. It is a remarkable piece. It seems so deep with all the layers. I hope you get the chance of seeing one.
Nice to see in the background the "Glashutte" logo. In glashutte they make very nice watches too... A Lange & Sohne, which in my opinion will be better and go beyond Patek in the years to come... Germany is good at it.
I agree! Glashütte Original and A Lange & Sohne make even more impressive watches than Patek in my opinion. My favourites must be the Glashütte Original Panomatic Lunar or the Lange 1.
Yes, A.Lange & Sohne is definitely up there. I like the Lange 1 and the Datograph...though I don't own any of em, I think they are really impressive watches. Too bad not may people appreciate it just because it's German. I hope Breiltingsource will do a review on the Datograph
not at all, Patek has waaay to much history and prestige to be able to be outplayed by Lange, i love lange and glashutte watches. They might even do better watched the patek. but that doesnt always matter. since history and collectability sometimes matter more.
@lolcat23 ... patek developed its first completely inhouse movements in the 30's ... before that they used to step on other manufacturers' movements such as JLC's. Sure compared to Lange has much more history and certainly more prestige, but to be honest i can't really say that the difference is as vast as you think it is. Anyway, to end this all i got to say is that in the contest Chronometrie 2009 PP failed to enter and compete against JLC and AP ... and that right there tells a lot!
btw let us not forget Patek's idiotic move to "march" against the Geneva Seal ... and because i won't even bother to explain why this is bad and what hides behind that move and the "press whore" way they announced their intentions, you might wanna think of it a little bit on your own. Anyway not trying to bash PP or anything like that! But if you ask me i'd get the Lange Double Split Chronograph over any PP Chrono out there every single day! But hey that's just my opinion ;)
The truth doesnt matter in the eye's of the collectors. Allmost everyone you ask will say that Patek is the "best" watchcompany, ofc i dont agree at all(Gruebel forsey, JLC etc etc). So the fact alone that "everyone" says pp is the best, it is the best. Normal collectors dont have the knowledge of how to see difference or the instruments to measure it. so the reputation alone is almost enough to keep the reputation alive.
Well the fact that the whole population of Earth believed once that the Sun rotates around the Earth wasn't enough to make it truth! There are two kind of people who are willing to spend that much money on a watch. Those who do it just cause they can afford to do it, and the Connoisseur or the WIS as we like to call ourselves. And to be honest i couldn't care less about the " truth " of the best group ... But what i have to give PP is that they try their best to live up to that reputation
What "WIS" or connaisseur's know i have often found painfully wrong, so i take little faith in the knowledge of those that call them selfs "Connoisseur"[hic]. Like i explained in the last comment, most of the ppl buying this type of watch dont have the knowledge of HOW to measure the quality of a watch. so they will never find out if Lange is in fact better or not. Not to mention, 42 thousand dollars isnt much for watch, even those buying watches for half a million dont know how they work.
bah i guess i have to give you that ... some of the most stupid things i've heard in my life about watches came from people that i expected would know better .
@Rublo8370 One hell of a classic watch that will definitely appreciate in value. Truly amazing timepiece. It's very unfortunate that almost all of us will never afford to own a Patek. Then again dreaming never hurt anyone.
