You do realize that "posturing" is never really a reference to physical postures, do you not? to be a posturing clown, is to refer to someone who consciously seeks attention---"a conscious mental or outward behavioral attitude"...zizek would probably consider this a correct interpretation, and not be affected by chomsky's opinion. Philosophical comedians also may be referred to in a similar way, and yet this does not diminish the truth they convey.
I loved Batman growing up. Now, to me, Batman represents a right wing character, specially as he is presented in the recent movies. Frank Miller who wrote some of the more popular batman stories is very right wing. But anyway, I like listening to Mr. Zizek and his ideas are thought provoking. I would fist bump him if the occasion rises.
The truth is that the science has inventors and this guy is inventing new theologies, which are his passion and I respect that, but damaging other theologies is cruel, most of all when the idealism of respect is based on not using the history for personal perceptions, because history is only history, the facts are provided by the acts of the present.
I have no trouble at all understanding this reasoning, it all makes perfectly sense to me. I just wonder what he would make of all that when including the knowledge of Skinner on the one hand, or how humans are to some level still like animals and on the other hand the neurological knowledge about addiction (prof. Margriet Sitskoorn), so based on a true understanding of for example greed on which kapitalism is based or as Ad Verbrugge stated: materialism is a mental disease.
DogSneeze, such a superficial reading would seem to me to preclude the possibility of such inventions. To invent something, to create a new idea about the biblical meaning of the word "neighbor" would require one to read TOO deeply into a work and its subtext. Given the state of the world, I think it's safe to say that even the most pious among us are confused as to the meaning of the Word.

He is from my country in which he is frowned upon by our "elites" for being too smart for them and because he likes Stalin. Funny and interesting guy, has much good to tell, but not all he says is gold, though.
'Philosopher Slavoj Zizek discusses his new book, The Monstrosity of Christ: Paradox or Dialectic?, and explains how the Christian concept of the "toxic neighbor" impacts political, economic, sexual, and cultural thought.'
i wonder how many people read this in the more info panel instead of thinking that people read the title only and commented on the vid. but if this isnt about Christianity i guess this should be flagged for misleading text, by your logic.
@pmoneygf: your not seeing the religion in this because he's a philosopher. from your perspective, you dont see the parallels he's making or the ironies hes comparing regarding the subject matter. its highly intellectual perhaps this is why its also not obvious regarding what you are looking for. no, its not totally devoted to what you were expecting but he does cover this on a smaller scale than you probably expected.

they dedicated their lifes to help others, help others who were damaged by society, a cruel society created partly by religion... charity is just alms... alms don't finish poverty... any of those you named finished poverty... they didn't changed anything despite their good intentions... they just symbolizes the fact that, despite you dedicate your life to charity and helping, you are not going to change anything... they pruned the leafs of the problem, not the root
@GABOBO1991 yeah your read well Saint Francis of Asissi even change art cause Giotto worked for the franciscan order and was a follower even today many many become Franciscan ...read about the LIFE know then talk ...SPIRITAL REALITY is real ...this postmodern relativistic philosophie gonna even get the things WORST
@cublop well, good science points to the fact that what is most probable is that God doesn't exist, and that if he does exists he is useless...
ALL religions are sects and ocultism... the fact that your book is old doesn't mean that is truth... the bahagavad gita is older than the Bible, is it more true because it is older? don't fucking care...
We are not God's chosen, because there is no god, and there is no chosen... that idea has made us walk in the path of destroying nature
Why ? It is his nose :) listen to his words - that is why people often like people, who are dumb and were teached to have manners :))) point there ? bad politians ! -- greetings from Slovenija !
Brilliant. Zizek never fails to inspire examination. I believe Zizek would tell Eyelash85 that Christianity's inability to fulfill even it's most obvious dictates goes to support his material criticism of its claims. You can blame the present, but you won't ever get beyond it. Thanks, Slavoj!
Try to define "love" is a challenge even for philosofical racionalsm. How this guy can criticize the way of love the neighbour in the Christian way? Love Itself is not beyond our understanding? I think he must be quiet in that subject to because he is walking under a weak structure himself to explain It (materislism).
at a certain moment, while talking of negri, he mentions some italian economists he's endorsing, without giving their names though. theirs is the periodization of the production of wealth rent -> profit -> rent. does anyone know who those guys are?

@slovakmath Is that a known fact or a guess? BEcause to me it seems like part of lier's body language, which occurs, not because of lying, but being nervous while giving a rehearsed speech in front of an audience. Lying is the same thing, only deceitful.
@Retardretroguy Did you read what I wrote? I wouldnt say it if I was guessing, believe whatever you want, I dont care. But in the end I know him... and you are just guessing. I work with one of his graduate students. Also you obviously dont know him very well if you think he is nervous or lying (you response is unwarranted for a philosopher of his standing which leads me to believe you havent the slightest clue who he is and how well known he is to intellectuals).
@slovakmath I'm sorry if I offended you in some way. I only asked because tic isn't the most obvious reason for such action (and I never heard anyone having sniffing and nose rubbing as a tic), and no matter how much one performs in front of an audience, they can get nervous (though it can be hidden, but body language gives it way quite often). But since you know him your answer is satisfactory.
Also at no point was I hinting that he was lying. I said lier and a speaker share the behavior
@slovakmath I don't know if he has a tick or not and don't care what I do find interesting is that among all this great information people focus their five senses and notice his manuerisims. Obama always shakes his fists around(and uses them) and no one mentions it . Zizek is just Zizek .A primitive monkey impulse to spot how people may be different while dealing with philosophy is just well moronic .
Right on the ball! His notion of f a third evolving form of publicity is also very well exemplified in recent trends such as the "fooding" movement in French cuisine or even in the price on pays for a cup of Starbucks coffee, not because of its properties, but because of the Starbucks experience being sold along with it.
Zizek always uses this "oil as catastrophe" foil to oppose the idea of some benevolent Mother Earth. It's a good point, but he'll need to revise the illustration to keep up with current science. Oil is now thought to have resulted from the collection of microscopic organisms over a very long period of time. Decidedly un-catastrophic and rather "circle of life" Mother-Earthy. Damn science.
@BroBombers Still, what a monstrous invention of nature - a creature whose existence is so horrid it is not even aware of it, that its lifespan should pass in the blink of an eye, and that its corpse should be wasted for millenia until the accident of mankind is able to use it to move around, thus corrupting the environment of all living creatures.
@BroBombers It's not about the fact of the matter, it's about what people perceive oil as. In the back of their mind lots of people still see oil as dinosaur juice, so the example is still good.
some interesting thoughts, but mr. zizek really should take less cocaine. while watching the video, i occasionally thought he would stop breathing and drop dead any second.
@riverdwell last time i saw them try closed captioning the morons couldn't understand his accent and wrote down things that were way off. that was the google books lecture.
@riverdwell it's quite a nightmere for a software to translate this speech into written form: Zizek has a horrible english due to pronunciation problem
He's sweaty, wearing a t-shirt at a formal speech, and can't stop rubbing his nose. He is so on cocaine.

i wonder how many people who comment really watched the full video.
the topic of this isnt even about christianity.
but i guess this what happens when everyones thinks he has to throw in his two cents after reading the title only.

@pmoneygf absolutelly not agree... he is talking about christ all the time, the super-hero (GOD) humanized (CHRIST)..

TENNSUMITSUMA 4 months ago
@pmoneygf: your not seeing the religion in this because he's a philosopher. from your perspective, you dont see the parallels he's making or the ironies hes comparing regarding the subject matter. its highly intellectual perhaps this is why its also not obvious regarding what you are looking for. no, its not totally devoted to what you were expecting but he does cover this on a smaller scale than you probably expected.

@cublop changed civilization?
they dedicated their lifes to help others, help others who were damaged by society, a cruel society created partly by religion... charity is just alms... alms don't finish poverty... any of those you named finished poverty... they didn't changed anything despite their good intentions... they just symbolizes the fact that, despite you dedicate your life to charity and helping, you are not going to change anything... they pruned the leafs of the problem, not the root

I think he must be quiet in that subject to because he is walking under a weak structure himself to explain It (materislism).

slovakmath 6 months ago
@slovakmath Is that a known fact or a guess? BEcause to me it seems like part of lier's body language, which occurs, not because of lying, but being nervous while giving a rehearsed speech in front of an audience. Lying is the same thing, only deceitful.
Retardretroguy 6 months ago
@Retardretroguy Did you read what I wrote? I wouldnt say it if I was guessing, believe whatever you want, I dont care. But in the end I know him... and you are just guessing. I work with one of his graduate students. Also you obviously dont know him very well if you think he is nervous or lying (you response is unwarranted for a philosopher of his standing which leads me to believe you havent the slightest clue who he is and how well known he is to intellectuals).
slovakmath 6 months ago
@slovakmath I'm sorry if I offended you in some way. I only asked because tic isn't the most obvious reason for such action (and I never heard anyone having sniffing and nose rubbing as a tic), and no matter how much one performs in front of an audience, they can get nervous (though it can be hidden, but body language gives it way quite often). But since you know him your answer is satisfactory.
Also at no point was I hinting that he was lying. I said lier and a speaker share the behavior
Retardretroguy 6 months ago

BroBombers 1 year ago 3
@BroBombers Still, what a monstrous invention of nature - a creature whose existence is so horrid it is not even aware of it, that its lifespan should pass in the blink of an eye, and that its corpse should be wasted for millenia until the accident of mankind is able to use it to move around, thus corrupting the environment of all living creatures.
StevenBradleyScott 1 year ago
@BroBombers I've been meaning to point this out for months but I didn't want to come off as a smart ass :).
Andreiiul 1 year ago
@BroBombers It's not about the fact of the matter, it's about what people perceive oil as. In the back of their mind lots of people still see oil as dinosaur juice, so the example is still good.
