I read angels and demons in three or four days and now I sarted reading the lost symbol. His books are really catchy, thrillers that mix fiction, reality and history.
His stories are good, very detailed and rich. But his characters seem flat, to me, personally. I've always felt that half of what makes a book, story, play, or any literature enjoyable is the characters that propel the story. His characters, to me, seem inhuman, like encyclopedias; his dialogue stiff and many times uninteresting.
If he could make his characters more "human" feeling, he'd be fantastic.
@WHD111 well... actually, i love his books partially bcuz of his character: Robert Langdon... he doesn't seem flat to me at all.. he's a wonderful character.... then if u look at others... especially in da vinci... some of them turn out to be different then what id expect from them.. i think he gives his characters a lot of thought... and his dialogues have some humour in them, which i always like. Read deception point... it was an interesting read.but ofcourse...all of them were!
@WHD111 I agree with you to an extent, however I think his books are meant to be very plot driven, very fast paced, which doesn't allow for strong character, really. It's like he's writing a more intellectual version of Indiana Jones. If he were to turn his stories into something more character driven then the sense of excitement might suffer.
@66kompis I don't like J.Grisham coz his books bore me. and I LOVE Dan Brown so I don't compare the two writers. and sorry if you like J. Grisham. I have nothing against him I just don't like how his books progress. It has a very slow progress until you notice that you're about to finish the book and still no climax. and then you'll notice that the climax will be rushed and then the end.
When it comes to naming Japanese characters, why is he so careless? The OS director Inoue Sato? Both "Inoue" and "Sato" are really common family names in Japan. Deliberately? But for what?
Only a paranoid, moronic conspiracy theorist will take DB as non-fiction, as fact. And they do. If you actually educate yourself on the Illuminat, you realize, that what DB writes is rubbish, fiction. The Illuminati are extinct, get over it. The world isn't ruled by some evil entity. Boo bloody hoo. Great author!
I love his books, but after reading several of his stories, they all seem to have the same formula of writing. not to say that his books aren't good, I just wish he would change it up a little bit.
@usernameT916 I agree. Langdon is ALWAYS brought into some kind of conspiracy that ALWAYS has to do with some secret brotherhood (Illuminati, Priory of Sion, Freemasons) and there is ALWAYS this mysterious assasin type (the guy with the glasses from A&D, Silas and Mal'akh) and there is almost ALWAYS some girl who helps him out (scientist from A&D, Sophie). Though I admit, I learn more from his books about religion and symbols than I do in my religion class at school.
@corpsemunger Most of it, yes. The whole Illuminati bullshit isn't true, but the stuff about the history of D.C I would think WOULD be true. Though I do admit most of it is rubbish.
@Montops Hmmm, but you even have to take a lot of the history with a pinch of salt, he takes liberties with it, Dan sort of takes true history, then bases fiction off that.
maybe I am being overly-skeptical because I loathed the Da Vinci code in everyway and hated his style of writing. Im most likely biased! haha
Yes he's book are some what similar but it seems to be like that with most authors after the 4th book you read or so,I've noticed that most of them from S.King J.Grisham. M.walters E.George etc etc has the same style of plots i guess that's why they are called air plan books easy to read easy to get into, great page turner..he actually makes you wanna go and research the secret societies he writes about..lol
Dan Brown's Lost Symbol is an eye opener. You don't even need to believe what he wrote. But you just can't help it. Maybe Brown might just be........ Enlightened! (hahahah)
