Greatest singer and song ever. Breathtakingly beautiful. Annoys me however when you get professional Irish performers embarrassingly trying to copy or add weight to their ailing careers with woeful covers.
I agree, I think this is better than the studio version. It's odd that that's probably the version he's best known for out of all his recordings. It's great of course, incredibly passionate and powerful, but he does sound distinctly ill and not at his best vocally. If more people heard just how good he was when he was younger they'd be blown away. The feckin radio only plays the well known stuff like this and dirty old town and song for Ireland
I love all the Luke versions of this one breaks my heart. Luke sounds so grief stricken, but it's the resignation in his voice that gets me. Quite simply the most wonderful singer we may ever hear.
Of course I like Luke Kelly more than is healthy (as in, wanting to travel back in time so I could run my fingers through those lovely curls), but thanks to my Lukey fangirlishness, I've discovered Patrick Kavanagh. I'm now reading Tarry Flynn, and enjoying it. Result!
ah youre so right...you know your singer is really beloved when everyone- women and even men--leave sappy heartfelt comments lol ( were all guilty of that!)
I remember playing the melody of this song as a child which is know as "Fáinne Geal an Lae" --(the rising of the day)- Luke added the melody to Paddy Kavanagh's poem (Raglan Road) ♪♫ ♥
Thanks, Cindy. A pleasure to "know" you and thanks for using my photo. (Private photo taken in 1973 at my parents' home). Ah, Luke, I still miss you terribly.
What an amazing song sung by an amazing man from an city. Ireland lacks his presence. R.I.P Luke Kelly.

Who's hitting the dislike button?
A bigoted cunt presumably.
Eire can have McGeady and McCarthy, Scotland plays the grandparent card with Luke Kelly.
Whit a fella!

Quite a different version to the studio one. This is better, if that's possible.
Well done Luke. Brilliant live performance. You are missed.
