  • The re-male is junk. If it weren't for the oringinal, there wouldn't have been a remake. It seems that modern day filmakers have no original stuff anymore.

  • The 2004 version is no match for the 1964 pitiable edition. What a great movie with a fabulous crew of quality actors leaded by Jimmy Stewart. Movies like this cannot be produced in our time, Hollywood movies makers are compelled to meet with contemporary restrictions like including ,ie, Blacks, Asians, Latinos and Females in the cast and all the modern bullshit stuffs; cokkies-cutters actors with poor or no skill, no problem there we have a lot of that presently in the USA.

  • The remake is excellent with superior acting, special effects, improved dialogue and soundtrack. The 1965 clunker is past its due date. I saw the original after enjoying the remake so much and all I could do was laugh at the original's poor audio, faded colour, ridiculous soundtrack, pathetic dialogue, and no special effects.

  • Sadly, I must concur that the modern day version amounted to a "hill of beans" to quote Rick in Casablanca).

The problem today is that the end users have to suffer the political correctness of Hollywood.

Just to add incest to insult and injury, the likelihood that someone will attempt to take me to rask for expressing an opinion about a piece of rubbish.

  • Superb film, like many others have said, the remake was utter rubbish.

What puzzles me though is why they didn't eat the lame camel they shot, surely that could have sustained them for several weeks? :)

  • and ernie bourgnine still going like the Ever-Ready bunny.... yes, good flic.... RIP to the others that have passed on.... including stunt pilot who lost his life, Paul Mantz

  • Richard Attenborough laughing towards the end like a lunatic when he learns that Hardy Kruger is a toy plane designer is an absolute killer.

  • You simply cannot "remake" such classics and such classic performances because the many distinguished actors who helped make these movies so memorable - can never be replaced.....(of course not forgetting the many wonderfully talented and dedicated production people who made the film possible. In my opinion a remake often confuses or angers people and in part sometimes takes away some of the deserving glory that belongs only to the original.

  • What a movie......!! What performances....!! Some of the world's most distinguished actors! What excitement......and drama......! This fine film really had it all.

Many scenes were memorable but for me - the scene in which Hardy Kruger's skills as an aircraft designer are questioned by Jimmy and his co-pilot and thus reveal that Hardy is a "Toy" plane designer (in their opinion) - is quite something. Extremely good performances. One really sees what it means to be a fine actor.

  • @hansentrust

Jimmy Stewart was a war hero; he flew B-17 bombers over Europe during WWII. Richard Attenborough went on to make Jurassic Park as an old man. And Ernest Borgnine was in the Bruce Willis movie I saw at the theater the other night: "RED".

  • Fantastic!!!!!!that's all

  • FUCK UTUBE AND ALL YOUR ARROGANT ASHOLE PARTNERS!!!!!!!!!

  • this is the older version

  • Love Connie Francis singing Senza Fine in the radio sequence.

  • EPIC introduction

  • this film is a gem!

funny how in this version, james stewart tears a strip off ernest borgnine for not telling him he had a radio (which they could use to communicate with possible rescuers).

in the hideously embarrassing 2004 remake they have the radio on so they can go into a camp dance routine while they're fixing the plane.

  • I saw it a few hours ago and it's great. Aldrich deserves an award for most unusual location of a title's sequence (excellent, by the way). Furthermore, it's a galaxy of Oscar winners: Stewart, Finch, Borgnine, Kennedy and Attenborough. Five!

  • the movie that had the original twist, why would they do a shitty remake of such a great film

  • I have had the DVD for a year now - wife did not want to watch the film - finally she took a 2 day aay break and I watched it last night. Love the characterisations - especially the sargent. Attenborough's mad laugh when he discovers plane designer only designs models is utterly convincing - and the expressions of the men in the final sequence is spellbinding. Worth watching again and again. Modern cinema just has nothing to match this.

  • BRILLIANT FILM

  • I saw this last night, and the first thing I thought was, "Man...Aldrich sure knows how to do some awesome opening credits..."

  • This is absolutely my favorite motion picture of all time- saw it as a kid, was totally enthralled by it. IMO, the engine start sequence is the finest piece of cinematography ever- it still brings tears to my eyes.

  • ...this makes two of us... :*|

  • Love the title sequence ... The music reminds me of Laurence of Arabia, but both are among my very favorite films, so I don't mind. BTW: The remake wasn't ALL bad. Thanks for posting!

  • One of the best movies ever. Very good actors like James Stewart and Hardy Krüger!

  • Seeing Borgenine take a 55 gallon drum to the head. Always an interesting start to a movie.

  • I remember reading this in Readers Digest...then the film came out. This film was like a rock. You waited for movies like this. Murphy's War with Peter O'Toole was also a rock like this.

  • Great intro to an excellent film. People see the original and forget the remake, please!

  • I love this movie, old but funny forever!
