In the UK, this group is barely known, despite this song being such a massive hit in the summer of 1968. However, the durability of their music was proved in the 80s when Joan Jett did Crimson and Clover, Billy Idol had a transatlantic hit with Mony Mony, and Tiffany topped the US and UK charts with I Think We're Alone Now.
I had a guru jacket wished I would have kept it....us girls wear them to.....what a blast we danced every weekend .....sock hops ... night clubs that we would slip in the doorman would wink and let us in.......
these dudes made hits, yo'...bananas!! I'm stunned at how many good songs they had!! I actually like their sound more than the beatles--just sayin'. More uptempo!! I'm surprised they didn't get as much recognition as the beatles...
6th grade all over again, man it was great. I can actually remember listening to this when a group of fine girls were walking by the house, could have been a movie scene.
@goethicdesire He wasn't used to doing this for the camera, I'm guessing. This was the 1960s, and music videos were kind of new to people, they did not have much experience or guidance on what to do, I guess. It's still a good video! Love it! :)
@sbakunogaara Many young kids might lean toward Billy Idols version because it is more modern and has better sound quality since they obviously used more advanced, modern technology to record theirs in the 1980s, but I'm sorry, Tommy just had the (much) better voice.
If Tommy James did the song today, he'd blow Billys version out of the water in a heartbeat, imo.
I grew up in the 1980s, so I'm not biased here toward the 1960s, I jest hear the better voice and judge accordingly.
@Northax he blows Billy out of the water anyway, no contest. This was and still is the best muisc ever produced, this was when music sounded like muisc and it was a time to be growing up when all this music was new and living was good.
I was at a wedding a few years ago and they played this song (more than once) ) i was very much suprised (upper mjiddle class people ) to hear everyone shout out "Get laid, Get F&%KIed" in the little pause after the first line of each verse. Is this a "Pittsburgh thing" or does it happen everywhere. thanks -- i'd love to know
ROFLOL, this video was made when Billy Idol was in grade school! Tommy wrote this (and according to Tommy, Mony was a Mutual of New York sign flashing across from his hotel room)
@antdigger Are you friggin' kidding me? Why don't you check out when this came out and when Billy Idol turned up. I just love when people post their ignorance for thw whole world to see... LOL
@x0katiek0x I was born in '58 and this is my kind of music. I just saw TJ last night, great show! My son who is 16 has all the 60's n 70's music on his ipod, he does'nt like the music of today!
@x0katiek0x oh so you want to born in a decade where you had to be dragged into an unjust war that we didn't need to be in and minorities were discriminated against openly in every aspect of life and Women didn't have any real power in the world...that's good...You can't just live on music alone. Although i do love the music...okay i'm a contrarian...lol
@Prkwon You are right about an unjust war, prejudices and inequities however, would you agree that some of the greatest music ever came out of 60's & 70s respectively? I was just a girl (born in '63) but I knew then I was listing to something great.
@noalittleaboutlot i agree with that if you tell my friends little brothers about some of the original music that 60s and 70s produced and they think i'm lying. I kinda pity the kids nowadays listen to crappy music like Justin beiber and the ilk and they think they are cool. They don't what being really cool is. Listening to the Stones is cool. The Who, Cream let me cound the ways...
@nyyNYR2094 Okay, so he looks ridiculous because he is not wearing snake bite piercings, blue-green or pink hair, black fingernail polish and fishnets, skinny jeans so tight you can see his chromosomes or tattoos that say RIP Cuz in bad Asian style letters across his forehead. Alas, the sixties were so unfashionable. What were they thinking? At least the music is nice.
@ariam724 I blasted this song every time it came on my little transistor AM radio & it came on every hour for how many months? It was a very big hit & my favorite song at age 12.
@lovemakatea Was absolutely my favorite song to blast out of my little transistor radio - AM radio - was 12 years old - this was a very big hit for them - dig those love beads.
Yes, it is. I remember when this song was new. The group was interviewed; they talked about hunting for a unique name for the girl in the song. They were in NY, and they saw a sign blinking MON-Y. (One lightbulb was out.) They SAID that that is where they got the name from.
@DakotaHunterFTW I don’t think Billy Idol dislikes this tune at all or he wouldn’t have recorded it. Artistic peoples are not jealous like that…unless they are in the same band, LOL
Yep…just read Tommy’s book, “Me, The Mob, and the Music”. Good book but it could have been longer and more detailed. It did cause me to remind my little sister who had many of my old 45’s and look for Mony, Mony…and she found it. Sooo, what is it worth? An orginal 45 of Mony Mony with one owner?
I can even tell you the story when I bought it…it was at Woolworth’s on Harlem in Chicago and I thought the name of the song was “Bony Bony”, and my older sister found it titled “Mony Mony”.
a late 60s classic,no one else could have sung this like tommy james, loved it when l first heard it on my way to school, used to hide my transistor radio in my school satchell,,whats a satchell you may say,,ask your dad,
This was sooooo hot at the roller rinks when I was a kid, speed skate time when this came on the speakers and doing skate tricks in the center of the rink to kick it up a notch and call someone out to center floor to hand lock and spin the hell out of them weeeeeeeeeeee---then they barf....lol !!! good ole days !!!!!

Tommy James has just written a book detailing his years with an alleged mob-run record company and what really happened to Jimmy Rodgers. Heard him on CBC radio this AM and couldn't believe it.
Tommy James and I have something in common. At the same age in our respected lives, moved to the same town and end up graduating from the same High School!
This video reminds me of the sacred whale cereMONY in Julian Lennon's fantabulous documentary Whaledreamers. Please watch it, if not for the whales, then to honor the memory of our beloved John Lennon. He must be busting with pride that his one and only son honored the whales and those who treasure them in his movie.
Classic garage pop. Somewhat surprisingly, seeing as the Beatles seem to dominate any music polls about the 60s, listeners of a British radio station then called 'Classic Gold' now just 'Gold', a few years ago voted this as their top song of the 60s. While I wouldn't go as far as that, it is an excellent track.

@etbella3 Jullian Lennon is not John Lennon's "one and only son". He had a second son, Sean Ono Lennon, with Yoko Ono. Just to let you know.
