This was a way for both countries to prepare for an inevitable war. Germany wanted this non-aggresion pact to be able to invade poland without the USSR attacking them. the USSR needed time to re-arm and re-establish its military and industry. A great way of understanding this is to read some cartoons by a man called David Low on the subject.

Vietnam turned out the way it did because of politics, a minor error with the freedom we share. If we did not want to piss off the russians we could've bombed the shipments of weapons on the dock in N.vietnam, and it would hve been a war of attrition.
