I have been mesmerized for the last 72 hours by FC and Swarb in particular, after a friend turned me on to them. I can't stop listening to the Maidstone Fiesta clips! Help!
RT has said that Swarb would push the tempo to the point where the songs were almost unplayable! Clearly, he's having a blast and the rest of the band are hanging on for dear life.
You can see the mischief on his face as he rips through the reel at the end! Great stuff! Thanks for posting!
@pinball1970 No Im not a drummer. You are entitled to your opinion on the first 20 secs. However, if DM isnt a good drummer then why has he been one of the most in-demand session drummers of the last 20 years? I dont think that those 20 seconds are particularily bad, nor is it that important. Probably all those who have employed him are wrong.
@pinball1970 Maybe the first 20 seconds were not the most inspired riff he ever played, but how can you judge his talent if you hardly heard of him? Fact is that he has played with Kate & Anna McGarrigle, Chris Rea, Ralph McTell, Everything but the Girl, Jethro Tull, Elton John, XTC, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Cat Stevens, Loudon Wainwright III, Brian Eno, Alison Moyet, Joan Armatrading, Jimmy Page, The Proclaimers, Spirogyra, etc. Very stupid to hire a bad drummer then!
@pinball1970 Tull has had a few drummers and Mattacks has been one of them. About the names I mentioned, yes I am serious, I even skipped about 25 other singers and groups he played with. Maybe he had an off day, but the fact remains he was a very in demand drummer during the seventies, eighties, nineties...
the band playing is ok - I like the quicker stuff (its in time! -joke)
On your list - famous artists tend to hire famous drummers - it does not mean they are great players or technical players
Paul Mac has played with Steve Gadd Ringo Ian Paice and Keith Moon off the top of my head
Very different drummers but Steve Gadd and Ian Paice were a class above the others and indeed most drummers you have ever heard unless you listen to a lot of Jazz
@ReflectiveBrian Untrue. this was well into his career with Fairport. He was already phenominally good. I saw them many times in those days and RT was a major talent then, as much as today
This is great. I think Dave Mattacks is one of the all time great unsung heroes. I saw them in the eighties at a gig in Cullompton Devon. It was a great gig, and the drumming was for me the high point. He is really versatile. Love his recordings with Joan Armatrading especially.
flipping deadly !! O Carolans Concerto played on Mandolins ! cool . check out the Johnstons version from late 60 s with Paul Brady and Mick Moloney . Dave Swarbrick and the boys were a major influence on Charles O Connor of the Horslips . Devil among the Tailors is the last tune
I was stuck in a boarding school in Canterbury - if I had only known this was kicking off down the road!! Hey ho - caught the buggers at Cropredy in 80 - happy days!
It's at the old Scout camp near Maidstone, where I once sang Goodnight Irene to the Lord Lieutenant of Kent, or something similar, it was a long time ago, and I'm on the Armagnac...
Richard Thompson first appears @ 1:55. I have this video/DVD myself. If a Fairport DVD/CD is available I most likely have it. Me favourite band of all time. Yes, more than the Beatles/Love/Rolling Stones/Dylan/Flying Burrito Bros.-Gram Parsons/JAirplane/Byrds!
I can never get enough of this video. Swarbs and Co. is me fave era of FC!

Where's Richard Thompson? Sandy Denny? Weren't they still in Fairport Convention in 1970? Maybe she's off stage since they are instrumentals, but Richard? That's not him playing either mandolin or the guitars, right? It's definitely Ashley Hutchins.
Richard Thompson is there briefly a few times, dark curly hair, dark denim jacket. Sandy Denny I think had allready left, she's not in the other clips fom this concert either.

Can I play better than this? Yes
I can say no if it makes you feel better
I like Sandy Denny's voice and I like the FC stuff I have heard which is why looked around on YT to see them
Are you a drummer?
Do me a favour and ask another drummer what they think of the first 20 seconds or so and get back to me

@bagsofbeans
This could back and forth. If you think he is great that is what counts
Have a look on my channel – I am drum/music nuts and have been since I was a kid
I have everything from John Bonham playing Moby Dick to some Chinese girl playing Time check – a Buddy Rich number
You can pm some other DM YT stuff perhaps?

@bagsofbeans
To be honest I have not heard that much of DM or FC and this vid is the 1st time I have seen them as a band
Matty Groves and Who knows where the time goes on my channel are just pics
The stuff I have heard I have liked very much which is why I went looking
I stand by my comments - the opening makes no sense to me at all and is in no way great drumming.
Please ask a drummer what they think of the first 20 secs and feedback

@pinball1970 Depends on the version. He is on the original with Sandy Denny. Fairport has had other drummers in the 80ies.

A very young Richard Thompson with no hint of the talent waiting to burst out.

Godamn, Mason's Apron. If Jimi Hendrix had played fiddle, he might have been as good as Swarbrick. Just Brilliant!
