It's funny that his rating in NFL xtreme 1998 was 88. He was rated higher than people such as Troy Aikman and Dan Marino. Not that it really means anything, I just find it funny.
@bassbonebobo huh...not sure why he wouldn't be expected to be successfull in the pros. He seemed just as good a QB as Leaf, at least from what I can remember.
Then 5 years later Jason Gesser is supposed to be the next big thing from WSU and now he just rambles about his playing days on their local TV network -_-
@seanman70 And he was arguably one of the greatest college QBs of all time, I have not and and will not defend Leaf's performance in SD or the reasons for it. But, as I said, I will defend his character now that he is clean and has his life back on track.
@dixonmixin10 Gesser was never expected to have much of an NFL career. He took his success at WSU and turned it into a short NFL stint, became a broadcaster on regional sportscasts and now he just coaches QBs at UI.
I am a raider fan i saw Jmac i hated him and thought he was the worst, but Ryan Leafs 1-15 game 4 yards 5 Turnovers was the worst QB performance Ever. Overall they both were bad, but Jmac was better
People keep bringing up Jamarcus Russel whenever Leaf is mentioned. The truth of the matter is that when it comes to busts Russel isn't in Leaf's league. In other words; Leaf makes Russel look like a pro bowler.
@RAIDERS58th mind explaining that comment?? It makes absolutely no sense.....Leaf wasn't even a #1 pick!!! Russel was picked #1...given a shitload more money, and did absolutely NOTHING in the league. Leaf isn't the biggest bust just because he yelled at a reporter
@dhide14 Who are you? His Father? Google their stats. Their Career numbers are very similar but at the end of the day, Russel has a higher QB rating and threw for more touchdowns; albeit for slightly less yards. And anyway, Leaf just sickens me more than Russel. Yuck! What a sleazy piece of shit that boy is. Makes my skin crawl. Furthermore, Leaf was a #2 pick and also given a shit load of money. The funny thing is, the moment the chargers picked him over Manning I knew it was a mistake.
@RAIDERS58th How could the Chargers possibly have selected Leaf over Manning when Manning was chosen #1 and Leaf was #2? Have you ever met Ryan Leaf? I sincerely doubt it.
@bassbonebobo #1 or #2; a wash out of a washed up bum is still a wash out of a washed out bum. End of story. I think what's really burning you is that Leaf is white and Russel is black and yet in every measurable statistic and quantity, Leaf is sill, the far greater disgrace. Am I right?
@RAIDERS58th I will not defend Leaf's statistics but I will defend him as a person. He is one of the most genuine people I have ever met and he has come to terms with the mistakes that he has made. Apparently you can't as you feel a need to attack him as a person. Then to top it off, you accuse me of being a racist for pointing out that Peyton Manning was chosen #1 overall in the 98 draft and therefore the Chargers never could have taken him over Leaf. Do I have that correct?
he had the potential to be a great quarterback. but he was too much of an ass to get his job done. this man makes me appreciate peyton and brees and rivers even more
this is a sad story really and as fans sometimes we forget that these are real people not just football players...and laughing at this....in my eyes...is wrong
@89Ryanhoward He basically fooled everyone into thinking he was a real quarterback when all he was was an immature brat who was consumed with a sense of entitlement and could not handle struggle.
u know leaf could have been good but he was such a loud mouth cocksucker that he wouldnt work hard...thats why manning has had a great career suck it leaf
I KNOW RYAN LEAF IS CONSIDERED A BUST BUT IF HE DIDNT HAVE SUCH A SHITTY WORK ETHIC I THINK IF HE STICKED WITH A TEAM THAT WANTED 2 DELVOP HIM AND NOT BEEN SO COCKY HE COULD OF DELVOPED IN A DECENT QB BUT HE 2 MUCH OF A MORON 2 DO THAT
I don't think it's any coincidence that that notorious photo of Leaf holding up his new Chargers jersey (0:45-0:52) has a vague resemblance to that notorious "Peace in Our Time" photo of Neville Chamberlain right after the Munich Pact. Google it and you'll see what I mean. Both colossal, terrible blunders that will live in infamy forever.
Ryan Leaf was a successful high school quarterback, leading them to the championship, and a successful college quarterback, a finalist for the Heisman Trophy, but a guy who developed a personality matrix predicted his combination wasn't suitable for the pros.
Russell's arm isnt as strong as Vick's, plus Vick is a better runner. Both have poor accuracy though. Randall Cunningham was the perfect qb with legs to run because he could run with the best of them and was an accurate passer. So many have tried to work the "running qb" gimmick in the ground but fail horribly. Vick or Russell would never win a QB Challenge like Cunningham.
Complete and total head case. I feel sorry for him. I saw him go off on a fan when he was in Miami for a short time during his decline. The coaches had to pull him back. Very sad.
Peyton is one the best QBs but along with that someone has to be the worst an it happens to be leaf... He just fell right into that slot like a receiver, I feel bad for him because all he wanted to do is be good but he never could. Smoke a blunt Ryan and watch the sport on TV like the fans... Hope you saved that guaranteed money you got in 98....
@edog59 are you stupid look at russells stats, his in barely his 2nd starting year 3rd year coming up and his done better than leaf, this is coming from a raiders fan who right now i simply hate russell. He has so much talent and is just wasting that shit which is what makes me more MAD. If you say that russell is a bigger bust then leaf you dont know shit about football and your just saying shit just cause of saying it and you probadly dont like the raiders which is another reason
@screamorockstar You fail to see that you have so many NFL rules that give the WR's more room than ever. Can't touch a WR beyond 5 yards. Russell would of never tossed more than 10 TD's if Ryan and Russell Traded places. Russell COULD BE GREAT but fail and thought about the MONEY more than being in shape and being the best. Russell cam from LSU Ryan came from Wash St which program is the bigger won which one has more meaning in NCAA history? Russell is the biggest bust of all time
@Crabman2186 NO ryan leaf is the biggest bust because he sucked and then he went and coached and got in trouble for drugs got arrested, had a interview break out, etc he has done more things to make him number one bust of the nfl.
@screamorockstar You think he is not the first 22 year old Qb to at immature in this world? The Chargers KNEW Manning was NFL ready mental and tough enough. They knew that when they gave up everything to get Leaf. Chargers set him up for failure, Russel had more weapons than Ryan ever had in SD. Russell just did not want to be great he is the biggest bust ever
@Crabman2186 oh yeah man russell had great weapons in receivers that we're rookies exactly russell didn't have a good offensive line for shit last year he had rookie receivers coaching problems having al davis telling him he was going to be good etc. Im a raiders fan and i know russell sucks but Ryan leaf is the biggest bust for the fact that he got out of the nfl being the biggest bust and made him self look worse coaching a horrible team and getting caught with drugs and being sent to jail.
@screamorockstar Ryan Leaf is still looked up too as a football god in WASH ST unlike J-Bust that no one gives a crap about. line i'll never forget from Mel Kipper- In 2-3 years you could be looking at the top 3 QB in the NFL " John Elway Like " god espn is such a crappy sports station. Ryan Leaf is messed up on Drugs thats his problems and setbacks. Russell had NOTING that could of stop him from being great. Lineman don't throw the passes that he did. Line sucked because no one wanted to block
@Crabman2186 dude ryan leaf was horrible look at his stats in 6 yeas russell has done better than that shit in 3 years. wtf i know russell sucked big ones but leaf was worse. Are you like related to him that you're protecting him so much.
@screamorockstar J.Russell to be fair to Ryan Leaf QB's today have more help to be a great QB examples- Touching the QB below the knees, Mask to Mask, can't touch a WR past 5 yards *some of those HUGE rules was not in place 10 years ago* Ryan Leaf is a bust by far but look at the program he came from he took a team that was not in the Rose Ball in 67 years Wash St is not a big time college like LSU. Trust me trade Ryan Leaf For Russell 10 years back and Russell would have under 10 TD's promise
@Crabman2186 hell no russell 10 years ago would of been better there is way more better athletes now a days way better defenses harder coverages and packages players are faster harder blitzes etc. Come on man ryan leaf is the biggest bust for the things i have mentioned and one more important thing that we all know. HE WAS PICKED OVER PEYTON MANNING ENOUGH SAID.
@Crabman2186 dude all the things i've said i know people will agree with me that ryan leaf is the biggest bust ever ok how about this its a fucken tie haha naw but i think leaf is the biggest buff and of course russell to follow if he doesn't do anything with his second chance. Because Ryan leaf had a second chance with the cowboys and sucked and couldn't play. Im just saying leaf is the biggest bust. Lets just get over it hahaha
@screamorockstar He wasnt picked over Peyton Manning, that would have made this story a hell of a lot worse though. Peyton went first overall and Ryan went 2nd.
@Jaquay444 I think that would of been the classic bite in the ass if the Colts drafted Ryan Leaf. But like i said 110 times Chargers knew Ryan Leaf had problems when they drafted him and set him up for failure with no weapons it did not help he was a drug addict when he came to the NFL. He regrets doing the things he did back then and hates the fact he failed in the NFL unlike Russell that does not give a fuck or never did about being good. I feel for Leaf
@Crabman2186 yup i totally agree with you, Jamarcus Russell was a first round first pick. No offense to LSU but i would never take a quarterback from a run first offense as the first overall pick.
@Jaquay444 J.Russel had the arm and body frame 6'6 to be the best QB ever. Dude can throw the ball 80 yards down the field if he wanted i seen this kid throw. But he got greedy and fat lazy. Ryan Leaf i think in the other hand was on heavy drugs and his mature level was not all there the Chargers knew it and drafted him anyways they should love the pick because they got LT years later
@Crabman2186 There's no evidence he used drugs before re-hurting his wrist while coaching West Texas A&M. Can agree with the maturity thing though think the biggest mistake was foregoing his senior season at Wazzou which would have allowed him more time to mature his game and deal with the media. He played high school in fair obscurity in MT probably seen him play living only 2 hrs away cant remember but watched his younger brother play for the same team.
not possible, the chargers gave up 2 first rounders, a second rounder, a pro bowl returner/receiver and a linebacker to get leaf. nothing was sacrificed for russell, he just sucks. leaf was supposed to be one of the greatest quarterbacks to play the game and the chargers screwed themselves for multiple years because of what they gave up for him while the raiders lost nothing for russell. it's pretty obvious why ryan is the biggest bust ever and it will stay that way for a long, long time.
dont think people understand leaf is named such a bust yes he sucked ass but its because manning was picked right before leaf and the colts were WILLING to trade the first pick to the chargers but they decided not to manning went on to MVPs, probowls, a superbowl leaf was out of the leage in 5 years in Russells defence quiinn and the other qbs if there were any lol arent doing much better... so leaf is the bigger bust because SD could of gotten that first pick the colts were desprite back then
I wish people would stop with this myth. 1. Leaf over Manning was never a serious debate for the Colts it was simply a ploy to negoiate a better contract with Manning. Bill Polian has said this himself. 2. The Chargers tried to trade up to the #1 pick and was flatly told no. 3. The Chargers wanted Peyton Manning they just took the next best qb because they needed one.
@purdue2009 wheres your proof buddy??? wheres the videos?? where the proof??............. im just messing with you im just going on word of mouth dude no need to make me feel dumb with facts lol
@rockcorleon Why are you so mad for? Did Ryan Leaf give you wet willys and pull your boxers up and hung you in the gym locker room? What a tool. I would use spit balls on you if i was in your high school. Give it a rest
Leaf is a success compared to all the bad music we're being tortured with in the past decade or so, this chump The Fray, David Gray, Adam Lambert, and all the rest of the music these days
Determined guy wins some then gets overconfident ...the losses get to him...he fails misserably then = Immature guy with anger issues and terrible passes
Allegedly, when asked by reporters what he would do the night after being drafted, Peyton said he would start working hard that night and study the playbook. And he did - the first thing he asked Bill Polian, president of the Colts, was if he could see the playbook.
When Leaf was asked what he would do the night after being drafted, he reportedly said, "I'm gonna be honest with you - I'm goin' to Vegas!"
@dhide14 I didn't plagiarize (yes, that's how you spell it) anything. That is my own comment on Leaf - his immaturity should have been a major red flag but the Chargers took a chance on him anyway. I don't think there's much else to say about him, he was an overall great college football player. He just wasn't prepared mentally for the pros. I think the "Vegas" quote is a good example of that.
He was a true Junior when he left, not a redshirt or Senior. He only spent 3 years in college, and if you want a player that's gonna be your team leader and your most important player, you typically would like that player to be mature, experienced, and cool under pressure. He was none of these, but somehow still put up tremendous numbers in his 2 years starting for Washington State.
alex smith better russel?idk man niners defense gets like 6 turnovers a game and smith only makes like 10-13points out of them. and russel is just a dumbass
oakland actually has kind of an okay team, and honestly as dumb as it was to take heyward bay that high in the draft, i have seen that guy get so open on some plays, he actuallly looks like he could be pretty good, But even wide open receivers dont get the ball when jamarcus russel is throwing. Jamarcus russel is so inaccurate, keep in mind i'm not saying alex smith is good tho lol
you did forget ryan leaf went insain on drugs like marijuana and crack... now hes in prison for 10 years... gees... i wanna feel sorry for him but the fact that he treated his fellow teammates like crap and call himself the most amazing QB ever... makes me wanna laught at him instead
the colts were going to use manning to get the chargers to trade more picks for him. like the chargers did with eli . but the chargers didnt trade there picks cause they wanted rivers not peyton
Some Charger fans I know say things like "Thanks Ryan! Thanks for letting us get Phillip Rivers, LT, and Shaun Merriman." During Leaf the Bolts were a joke, I think its a miracle how in the course of a couple of years they became one the most talented teams in the nation. Alot of teams have to go threw YEARS of rebuilding to become good again.
you know what i want to thank you ryan leaf and if you really look at it he did save the chargers franchios because since leaf sucked so bad the chargers got the #1 pick to get LT
he had bad times, i am a washington state fan. He has more skill than payton manning, but manning was a better leader, if Ryan wasnt so cocky all the time he could have been great.
To hell with that. That offense they ran at WSU didn't prepare him at all for the NFL. It was a precursor to a lot of the spread offenses you see around today. That asshole couldn't pick apart an NFL defense if his life counted on it.
First of all, nice video. The Fray and Ryan Leaf really mix! haha.
and to the person I'm replying to, the Colts were TERRIBLE before drafting Peyton. Remember 1997? That team was very bad. Ryan Leaf just couldn't read a coverage to save his life.
well, he WAS the 2nd pick in the draft and that comes with high expectations. He retired at 26 and in his best pro year (2000), he threw 11 TDs to 18 INTs, completing half his passes, and ending up with a QB rating of 56.2, although you are correct in saying he didn't have good pass protection.
@wwevstna2008v2 Russel had more weapons than Ryan Leaf like seriously who did the Chargers have? Nobody, I feel bad for the guy people expect this great person and people have problems. J.Russell desirves to be #1 bust of all time because the guy just was a lazy fuck. He had McFadden, Zach and Figgins to work with plus Heyward Bey i know the guy can't catch but he does have speed. Ryan Leaf is not a top bust in my mind he came from WASH ST for crying out loud Russel came from LSU enough said
Well a lot of high pick qbs have to deal with bad o lines. If you throw one touchdown and like 13 interceptions in a season and get one win and hurt your team, it cdant be all that teams fault.
Sometimes, it's actually worse, as a 'can't-miss' prospect, to make it to one of the top leagues and fail than it is never to make it at all. As a Yankees fan, if I said the name 'Brien Taylor' to you, does it mean anything? If not, you've actually proven my point. But, if so, you probably understand what I'm getting at. Great choice of music to underscore your point about a man who knows all-too-well about underscoring points.
just looking at his face make me laugh like a hyena

@Crabman2186 oh yeah man russell had great weapons in receivers that we're rookies exactly russell didn't have a good offensive line for shit last year he had rookie receivers coaching problems having al davis telling him he was going to be good etc. Im a raiders fan and i know russell sucks but Ryan leaf is the biggest bust for the fact that he got out of the nfl being the biggest bust and made him self look worse coaching a horrible team and getting caught with drugs and being sent to jail.
screamorockstar 1 year ago
@screamorockstar Ryan Leaf is still looked up too as a football god in WASH ST unlike J-Bust that no one gives a crap about. line i'll never forget from Mel Kipper- In 2-3 years you could be looking at the top 3 QB in the NFL " John Elway Like " god espn is such a crappy sports station. Ryan Leaf is messed up on Drugs thats his problems and setbacks. Russell had NOTING that could of stop him from being great. Lineman don't throw the passes that he did. Line sucked because no one wanted to block
Crabman2186 1 year ago
@Crabman2186 dude ryan leaf was horrible look at his stats in 6 yeas russell has done better than that shit in 3 years. wtf i know russell sucked big ones but leaf was worse. Are you like related to him that you're protecting him so much.
screamorockstar 1 year ago
@screamorockstar J.Russell to be fair to Ryan Leaf QB's today have more help to be a great QB examples- Touching the QB below the knees, Mask to Mask, can't touch a WR past 5 yards *some of those HUGE rules was not in place 10 years ago* Ryan Leaf is a bust by far but look at the program he came from he took a team that was not in the Rose Ball in 67 years Wash St is not a big time college like LSU. Trust me trade Ryan Leaf For Russell 10 years back and Russell would have under 10 TD's promise
Crabman2186 1 year ago
@Crabman2186 hell no russell 10 years ago would of been better there is way more better athletes now a days way better defenses harder coverages and packages players are faster harder blitzes etc. Come on man ryan leaf is the biggest bust for the things i have mentioned and one more important thing that we all know. HE WAS PICKED OVER PEYTON MANNING ENOUGH SAID.
screamorockstar 1 year ago
@screamorockstar you are fucken nuts bro thats all i have to say Russell is the biggest bust ever get over it lol
Crabman2186 1 year ago
@Crabman2186 dude all the things i've said i know people will agree with me that ryan leaf is the biggest bust ever ok how about this its a fucken tie haha naw but i think leaf is the biggest buff and of course russell to follow if he doesn't do anything with his second chance. Because Ryan leaf had a second chance with the cowboys and sucked and couldn't play. Im just saying leaf is the biggest bust. Lets just get over it hahaha
screamorockstar 1 year ago
@screamorockstar He wasnt picked over Peyton Manning, that would have made this story a hell of a lot worse though. Peyton went first overall and Ryan went 2nd.
Jaquay444 1 year ago
@Jaquay444 I think that would of been the classic bite in the ass if the Colts drafted Ryan Leaf. But like i said 110 times Chargers knew Ryan Leaf had problems when they drafted him and set him up for failure with no weapons it did not help he was a drug addict when he came to the NFL. He regrets doing the things he did back then and hates the fact he failed in the NFL unlike Russell that does not give a fuck or never did about being good. I feel for Leaf
Crabman2186 1 year ago
@Crabman2186 yup i totally agree with you, Jamarcus Russell was a first round first pick. No offense to LSU but i would never take a quarterback from a run first offense as the first overall pick.
Jaquay444 1 year ago
@Jaquay444 J.Russel had the arm and body frame 6'6 to be the best QB ever. Dude can throw the ball 80 yards down the field if he wanted i seen this kid throw. But he got greedy and fat lazy. Ryan Leaf i think in the other hand was on heavy drugs and his mature level was not all there the Chargers knew it and drafted him anyways they should love the pick because they got LT years later
Crabman2186 1 year ago
@Crabman2186 There's no evidence he used drugs before re-hurting his wrist while coaching West Texas A&M. Can agree with the maturity thing though think the biggest mistake was foregoing his senior season at Wazzou which would have allowed him more time to mature his game and deal with the media. He played high school in fair obscurity in MT probably seen him play living only 2 hrs away cant remember but watched his younger brother play for the same team.
ButteWhat 1 year ago
not possible, the chargers gave up 2 first rounders, a second rounder, a pro bowl returner/receiver and a linebacker to get leaf. nothing was sacrificed for russell, he just sucks. leaf was supposed to be one of the greatest quarterbacks to play the game and the chargers screwed themselves for multiple years because of what they gave up for him while the raiders lost nothing for russell. it's pretty obvious why ryan is the biggest bust ever and it will stay that way for a long, long time.
douchiedude 1 year ago
dont think people understand leaf is named such a bust yes he sucked ass but its because manning was picked right before leaf and the colts were WILLING to trade the first pick to the chargers but they decided not to manning went on to MVPs, probowls, a superbowl leaf was out of the leage in 5 years in Russells defence quiinn and the other qbs if there were any lol arent doing much better... so leaf is the bigger bust because SD could of gotten that first pick the colts were desprite back then
Th3Best0ne 1 year ago
@Th3Best0ne

That should have been a red flag right away.
TKwarrior17 2 years ago 8
@TKwarrior17 way to steal that from NFL Network.
jh23454 6 months ago
@jh23454 Lol yeah ive seen that video too. hahaha
but about the 'red flag' is there a specific meaning to it or just means something bad.
YouGayTubes 6 months ago
@jh23454 What? You can't steal facts. Which is what my statements are.
TKwarrior17 5 months ago
@TKwarrior17 so are you going to plagerize the entire ESPN segment on draft busts here on YouTube?...or do you have any of your own comments on Leaf?
dhide14 3 months ago
@dhide14 I didn't plagiarize (yes, that's how you spell it) anything. That is my own comment on Leaf - his immaturity should have been a major red flag but the Chargers took a chance on him anyway. I don't think there's much else to say about him, he was an overall great college football player. He just wasn't prepared mentally for the pros. I think the "Vegas" quote is a good example of that.
TKwarrior17 3 months ago
Hah yeah, I remember that. My dad and I always wanted Manning, but everyone I knew said Leaf was better. Obviously, we were right.

he left early?? i thought he went throught all his 4 years in college...
tweakrenegade 2 years ago
He was a true Junior when he left, not a redshirt or Senior. He only spent 3 years in college, and if you want a player that's gonna be your team leader and your most important player, you typically would like that player to be mature, experienced, and cool under pressure. He was none of these, but somehow still put up tremendous numbers in his 2 years starting for Washington State.
TKwarrior17 2 years ago

alex smith better russel?idk man niners defense gets like 6 turnovers a game and smith only makes like 10-13points out of them. and russel is just a dumbass
RaiderJevin 2 years ago
oakland actually has kind of an okay team, and honestly as dumb as it was to take heyward bay that high in the draft, i have seen that guy get so open on some plays, he actuallly looks like he could be pretty good, But even wide open receivers dont get the ball when jamarcus russel is throwing. Jamarcus russel is so inaccurate, keep in mind i'm not saying alex smith is good tho lol
Briansmells 1 year ago
yeah its a good thing the 49ers have a good defense that can make turnovers if their defense was bad to theyd lose almost every game

No, in fact the chargers basically begged the colts to trade up because they wanted Manning. When it didn't work out, they had to settle for leaf.

the colts were going to use manning to get the chargers to trade more picks for him. like the chargers did with eli . but the chargers didnt trade there picks cause they wanted rivers not peyton

To hell with that. That offense they ran at WSU didn't prepare him at all for the NFL. It was a precursor to a lot of the spread offenses you see around today. That asshole couldn't pick apart an NFL defense if his life counted on it.

and to the person I'm replying to, the Colts were TERRIBLE before drafting Peyton. Remember 1997? That team was very bad. Ryan Leaf just couldn't read a coverage to save his life.

well, he WAS the 2nd pick in the draft and that comes with high expectations. He retired at 26 and in his best pro year (2000), he threw 11 TDs to 18 INTs, completing half his passes, and ending up with a QB rating of 56.2, although you are correct in saying he didn't have good pass protection.
wwevstna2008v2 2 years ago
@wwevstna2008v2 Russel had more weapons than Ryan Leaf like seriously who did the Chargers have? Nobody, I feel bad for the guy people expect this great person and people have problems. J.Russell desirves to be #1 bust of all time because the guy just was a lazy fuck. He had McFadden, Zach and Figgins to work with plus Heyward Bey i know the guy can't catch but he does have speed. Ryan Leaf is not a top bust in my mind he came from WASH ST for crying out loud Russel came from LSU enough said
Crabman2186 1 year ago
