  • Why did they cut this out of the movie? This is so beautiful and heartbreaking.

You really get a feel for how Mark truly is the loneliest one and the one who has to suffer the most because he has to watch everyone die from AIDS. This gives him more depth and then you hear how heartbroken Mimi is to see Roger leave.

I feel more sorry for Mark though...because I'm so much like him...

  • the best song in the whole play i dont understand why they cut it out of the movie i would absolutely love the movie

  • "you dont want baggage with ought lifetime guarantees you dont want to watch me die, i just came to say goodbye love..." -best line in song-

  • I neither hate nor love Daphne. Her voice isn't my taste, but it has character and fits the part well. I do feel like her acting can be a little much sometimes, but it's fine. I just wish people on both sides would stop argueing over it. You can't change someones preference.

  • 1:13 Roger's voice is brilliant. I listen to the whole song just for that part, again and again.

  • I know it's the original, and I love the play and the film, but I can't stand Daphne Ruben-Vega's voice. It's just awful to listen to.

  • @ChocoCoatedLemons i completely agree! i have no idea why she would be casted as the very first mimi, they should have used someone amazing because thats the one that you'll always (whether you like it or not) remember

  • @ChocoCoatedLemons same here. i don't care for it.... i much prefer rosario's more sweeter tone quality.

  • Am I the only one who thinks this Mimi sounds like Miss Swan from MadTV? Especially at 4:30ish.

  • I prefer the movie version of this song because there seems to be more emotion during Mark and Roger's argument, you know? Mark gets really pissed off, but he seems kinda calm until he says "FROM WHAT?" and then that's what he gets pissed. But Roger gets pissed right away in both. And Mark gets pissed faster in the movie version, if that makes any sense.

  • this song gives me shivers...the actor that played mimi is suchhh a strong singer. especially at the end <3

    :o

  • @YvonneE1994 Daphne Rubin Vega, the original <3

  • I miss Angel... :(

  • 4:26 - 4:32 addicting

  • i prefer the movie version of mimi i cant stand the original mimi

  • @bubblegum4please

I know it's mean, but I hate her voice to an intense degree.

  • Best Line In The Play:

"Maybe Because I'm The One Of Us To Survive"

  • @SuperGilfte mine "your always preaching not be numb, when thats how you thrive"

  • this doesn't even sound like them no offense

  • @Lovelyville12345 What are you talking about? Of course it does! Unless you're talking about the movie version....Or you've never seen the original cast?

  • "Maybe because I'm the one of us to survive!"

    That was coooold, Mark.

  • @sansnguyen That's cold? No way, dude. Can you imagine that? Think of all the pain they're feeling over Angel's death and then think about the fact that Mark will have to go through that. Over and over again. He has to live while everyone he loves dies around him.

  • @lewisjoshuad125 Well yeah, I definitely get that. It sucks from both sides, really.

  • @sansnguyen Actually, I think it's more like Mark admitting what he's most afraid of -- that he's going to be left alone. He isn't trying to rub anyone's face in anything, he's just in a lot of pain himself.

  • Daphne Ruben-Vega.....Please...Go away....

  • @MoMoRocks111 Can you not post things like this :| it's rude.

  • @KyuukaKoinu Huh? Oh, the Daphne Ruben-Vega thing? I've like completely changed my opinion xD I actually LOVE her now!

  • seeing Adam and Anthony perform this from the front row is SO AMAZING. TEARS ROLLING DOWN MY FACE.

  • I have always felt bad for Mark during this song... :(

  • anthony rapp will always be mark for me. no one can replace him!

  • @screamer4charlotte, uhm, he still is... :S

  • I keep replaying 3:27 over and over again. I LOVE the emotion in Mark's voice when he sings this.

  • brb crying.

  • Mimi's "You're full of ...." was so passionate

  • Not a fan of this recording per se, but the Roger/Mark section is the best available. POOR BABY!

  • I love how they have made Mimi's voice husky and sound sick. This is the best version of the song I have heard, thank you for putting it up. :D

  • why does Collins say "I can't believe he's gone" here but in the movie, he refers to Angel as "she"?

  • @angelismx i've always wondered that!!!!

  • @angelismx maybe cause hes both?

  • @irockursoxnunoit but why change the words for either recording?

  • @angelismx maybe they thought it was more respectful one way than the other

  • @angelismx With Angel (or any trannie) you refer to them as a she when they are dressed as a she, and a he when they are dressed as a he. For the most part.

  • @lahlyndss she's very sick in this scene, a robust and clean voice wouldn't make any sense..

  • probably my favorite song in the entire show. not sure tho but i do love it

  • the song itself is sad and during the fight between mark and roger plays halloween's track sped up so that makes it even worse.... or that's atleast what i think.

  • Owowow, why is it that Joanne and Mimi's voices hurt my ears? D:

  • @EriksWanderingChild I know right and i cant find the movie version!

  • This part of the song confuses me... I thought to say something is "in vein" was to TRY something and FAIL. So to say Angel's death was in vein seems as if they're trying to say Angel died because of Roger and Mimi's relationship but that's selfish... Angel died of AIDS and he certainly didn't want to; he didn't mayrter himself.. so Im confused about it o.o;

  • @HereditaryAPATHETIC It could also mean that as long as something good came from his death, he didn't die for nothing. If his death made Roger and Mimi realize how precious their own time was, his death wouldn't be in vain. Because Roger doesn't see that, it makes his death in vain.

  • @HereditaryAPATHETIC It's more like Roger's saying that Angel died for nothing, there was no reason or point to it all.

  • love this song

  • Is that David Blaine in the 1st column, 2nd row?

  • I love her voice, I just think Rosario does a cleaner, more clear version. However, I do suppose Mimi is very sick and frail, and he voice does suit this well.

  • I always feel so sorry for Mark during this song. Yeah, it's sad to see the couples break up and to hear Mark and Roger arguing, but in the last song, Mark just confessed to himself (and us) that he feels like he's stuck just being a witness to everything and that in the end, he'll be alone again. And what happens here? He's stuck witnessing as his friends break apart in a time when they probably really need each other, and then Roger calls him out on it in an angry, bratty way. Ouch.

  • @ColtenASherk In the defense of Roger, it's hard for him too, I mean, think about it, he's experiencing this too, but also in the knowledge that he doesn't know how much time he, or Mimi has, so he was bound to say something in anger, I feel sorry for both of them

  • @TheJacksForAllTrades Oh yeah, I'd never say it wasn't hard for Roger either. They've both got some heavy shit in their lives. I guess I just sympathize with Mark more because I connected with him more easily than I did with Roger. But yeah, this is just almost painful to listen to sometimes :c

  • @ColtenASherk It shows how much work went into building the characters

  • i like both versions but personaly im a roserio dawson fan so i love her version but this ones good

  • Rosario sounds fine, but she certainly doesn't sound like a sickly addict.

  • the movie rivis was beter

  • I wonder why they didn't do the full version of this in the movie :'(

  • I personally think Rosario and Daphne BOTH did AMAZING jobs! They had two different interpretations of Mimi and so did Renee. Seeing different takes on the role keeps things fresh!

  • Daphne is the voice of Mimi so all you haters can SHUT YOUR FUCKING MOUTHS

  • Woooooo, I must admit, Daphne's "He's full of sh*t!" is emotionally intense! 0:42

  • I never understood why everyone compares Daphne and Rosario and yet the other Mimi's are just kinda accepted (well accept Vanessa Hudgens (understandably)) they are two comepletely different performers and portray Mimi in very different ways. Why can't people just accept RENT for what it is and enjoy Jonathan Larson's incredibly emotional music.

  • like the movie better.........the women seem to deep and harsh

  • If i could only listen to one soundtrack for the rest of my life, it would be RENT!

  • From 4:10 to 4:18 "I Should Tell You" chords are played. I am one of those people that believes Mark/Roger were together at some point or would be after the RENT takes place. And I think that shows Jonathan just may have thought that too.

  • does daphne have a lisp? sorry, but it kinda sounds like it. she pronounces words like a little kid. just my opinion.

  • Daphne's not a great singer but she fits the part well and I love this version of Goodbye Love better than any other I've heard. I mean come on, Mimi's a drug addicted stripper...she's not supposed to sound polished and pretty, I think Daphe's voice is perfect.

  • BEST VERSION!!!! it just makes you wanna get crazy!!! woooh!!! lol

  • i will never understand why the full version of this song got cut from the movie.

  • @mswixx12 they couldn't set the scene up right.

  • chris tells us why in the commentary of the dvd. something to the effect of when they were editing the movie they had to cut some songs because it presented to many highs and lows for the audience. so when they started screening it.. even though he hated to do it, it was necessary to cut this song and a few others just for continuity sake. @mswixx12

  • @mswixx12 The director said it was because it seemed strange for Roger and Mark to sing directly to each other when they hadn't previously in the film.

  • @Britishsuperstar But then they sing together in What You Own, so then it's just like 'What are you talking about?' Excuses, excuses.

  • @mswixx12 They kept it in the 2 disc speacial edition.

  • @mswixx12 I have the full version in my edition of the movie!! it's the one with 2 cds in it..

  • @mswixx12 according to the commentary it was a good part in the movie but when they screened it it was too much emotion and wouldve taken away from the emotion at the end of the movie..if you have the movie they explain it on the second disk (Special Features)

  • @mswixx12

It was deemed to be an emotional overload by the director or something. It's a show about young people dying in terrible ways, so I don't think you could make it much more emotional.

  • What does OBC mean?

  • @hiippocritters Original Broadway Cast

  • OBC OWNS!! best of all they not only played the roles but in a way lived them!

  • I have to say : the OBC isn't always the best!! Personally I think the final cast was better :) Not only was the OBC not as good as the following cast in RENT, but also in Grease. In Grease, the singers basically just yelled on pitch!!

  • It's not only their voices, I prefer Rosario over Daphne only b/c I like better her interpretation of Mimi, it's more like an agressive-yet-loving girl, a strong girl who lived a hard live and learnt to get up after being beaten down. Daphne plays Mimi more like a girl who lived blind to reality, who belives in good people, more naive and spiritful. Both are great, and they both have awesome voices, but I still prefer Rosario.

  • It's a cruel irony; Roger didn't want to be with Mimi because she is dying (that she is diseased). However, because he didn't want her to die in his arms, he left - which caused Mimi to give up hope and nearly die.

  • @TimEddyHughes while in his arms

  • The piano that starts at about 1:55 is one of my favourite melodies [?] in this musical, and the movie. It's very panicky, but beautiful. I don't know why, but something about it is just immensely touching.

  • To qoute: "come on, guys, chill!"

Both Rosario and Daphne have talent. Personally, I prefer Rosario on some songs and Daphne on others. It's all a matter of opinion. However, Daphne was the original. She set the bar and Rosario, in her own way, raised it. She, along with the rest of the movie cast, brought many new RENT fans to the scene, as did every actress who played Mimi in the musical. They all have fans and are all brilliant as Mimi.

  • Daphne really isn't my cup of tea.

  • Idina sounds so different here! Love Daphne, she sounds like a drug addict. Adam is still too much of a pretty emo boy for me to like him in this role. He is an amazing singer, don't get me wrong, but I prefer the guy who sang in the workshop version. He just sounds like a guy battling aids and coming off of a drug addiction.

  • Okay, people just need to shut up. Everybody has a right to state their own opinion. I personally Rosario's voice fits Mimi a little better than Daphne's, she sounds a bit too tough and raspy, which could suit Mimi to other people, but clearly not to the people who said that it doesn't. It doesn't matter what other people think, if you like Daphne more, fine, if you like Rosario more, fine, but just remember that not everybody is going to agree with you.

  • I'd be happy to die for a taste of what Angel had...

  • Anyone who has anything to say about Daphne has no idea what rent was before the film came about but they have to know that rent was around way before the movie came along... Rent was big with Daphne and honestly they can't be compared... for the movie version i guess Rosario can be acceptable... and the only reason why Rosario was chosen is because If i'm not right correct me... Daphne was pregnant? so.... anyway I love the original :)

  • @neene7 Yep, Daphne was pregnant and Fredi (Joanne) thought she was to old.

  • @archer3k1 I thought Daphne herself thought she was too old to play the part now? I thought I saw an interview with her where she said she was almost too old to play her originally, and that she thought she was far too old now.

  • wow, Idina sounds so different...

is that Adam Pascal? best part of this is when he comes out of nowhere with "All your words are nice, Mimi, but love's not a three-way street" <3

  • Daphne's raspy voice shows how hard mimi's life had been. I like it.

  • "I'd be happy to die for a taste of what Angel had..." :'( the one line that never fails to make me burst out into tears! UGH!!

  • 0:30

    That is all.

  • "he was the same way. he was always run away hit the road don't commit you're full of shit!" my favorite line in the song!

  • I really wish I could have seen this!

  • why does everybody forget about renee elise goldberry? rosario and daphne were not the only two mimis.

  • @boyslikegirlsthunder Yeah Renee was A M A Z I N G!!! But so was Tamyra Gray. But I do understand where your going with Renee. OBC, the movie, and final Broadway were the big three RENT productions so Renee should be included in the arguement.

But unfortunately, so is Vanessa Hudgens =/

  • @AmourAmazing yeah exactly! every mimi was fantastic in their own way.

    oh. except for her. :(

  • @boyslikegirlsthunder Vanessa Hudgens??? LOL

  • @boyslikegirlsthunder

Goldsberry is my favorite mimi of all time. (:

  • @boyslikegirlsthunder She wasn't as good as Daphne or Rosario in some of the songs. I personally don't have an absolute favorite Mimi. All of the Mimi's were amazing in different songs. But all of the Mimi's sounded good in this song. It's hard to mess this song up. But you have to admit, Goldberry sounded kinda strange during the slow songs. She got beter though, so she was really good in this song. Just my personal opinion.

  • @boyslikegirlsthunder She was an AMAZING Mimi. Probably my favourite.

  • @Abbytater right?! I loved her emotion. of course, that cast was my first RENT cast and my first is always my favorite.

  • @boyslikegirlsthunder I assume it's just an Original Recording vs. Movie debate, not a Mimi-across-the-board debate.

  • definately there are versions slightly better than this. The new version for the film in my fair opinion is better than this, the voices are fresher, and rocker, and brighter isn't it? However, I like this version too.

  • For any of us who have loved and fought, loved and lost in the name of love or in the name of cancer, aids, addiction or anything under the sun; who have been hurt, rejected, invalidaded, abandoned; who have cried or been scared..... this is a "must listen to" from the award winning Broadway Play - Rent. When you reach point 5:30, I hope you are as profoundly touched as I am by the passion and pain and love and surrender in the voice of Mimi, played by Rosario Dawson.

  • Her voice is decent in this song.

  • Daphne def has the best version of this song! Her voice is so raw & believable, but honestly, this is the only song I can listen to her sing.....

  • uh i prefer rosario,i like the movie version of this song better

  • @MsPisces1234 you probably think the movie was better then the play too... sigh...

  • am i the only one that cant STAND daphne? her voice makes me want to punch something.

  • Well, she is sick. You can't expect her voice to be smooth, stereotypically flawless, and melodic. It's the power and passion. She can make you sob. Not because her voice is amazing, but because she puts such emotion in it.

  • I do prefer Rosario's singing, but I'm amazed at how much raw emotion Daphne can put into a few words.

  • ARE YOU KIDDING?!?!?! Daphne was fantastic! I agree with JudoCreature! Rosario was great in the MOVIE version! I like the movie but if I had to pick a SOUNDTACK it will be the ORIGINAL BROADWAY SOUNDTACK!!!! Note I said BROADWAY!

  • I dont dislike Daphne's voice, it's her accent.....

  • @cieras1212 -She's Latina! The character is Latina! 1plus1 man!

  • We used to have this fight each night

    She'd never admit I existed

    He's the same way

    He was always

Run away - hit the road

    Don't commit

    You're full of shit

  • Daphne is good but I think Rosario has a nicer voice. I personally don't think Rosario could handle the strength of Mimi's voice in the stageshow, but then again I can't be sure/

  • @thatnylesguy i don't think she could either...

  • I personally think that the girl in the movie has a better voice then the musical.. but that is my opinion. I have seen both.

  • I don't know why I just am not a huge fan of Daphne's singing, it sounds nasally. I loved her Out Tonight but everything else is... I don't know. Honestly I think Renee Elise Goldsberry is the best Mimi singing wise. Rosario is good, but Renee is my favorite.

  • @LizSmiles1 But I liked Daphne in this

  • you guys cant really compare most of the movie to the stage show because of the cuts put in to make the movie a more cinematic thing rather than stage show

  • rosario is much better than daphne... daphne is shit

  • @defyingravity08

I expect people who saw the movie first to say this

  • I'm not a very big fan of Daphne's Mimi but I still have to say that her version of Goodbye love is heartbreakingly beautiful....

  • Daphne is awful. Totally over the top.

  • @packrat216 she needs to be over the top, it was for the stage

  • @preppynproud620 Agree stage acting and screne acting are diffrent...in a good way. I like theater more than movies though heh

  • The way I see, Daphne is perfect for the stage version because in a theatre you can't always see the faces of the characters, so you need to be able to hear the emotions. That is what Daphne does. Rosario is perfect for the film because even though she doesn't emote through her singing, in a movie, you can see Mimi's crying so you don't necessarily need to hear it in her voice. I love both, either way. That's just my personal take on Daphne v. Rosario.

  • I agree with lisambofoh. i prefer rosarios voice, but daphnes is good too.

and..WOW!! Roger is so powerful in the version! Holy!

  • I'm a Rosario and Renee fan (I can't pick between the two), but Daphne is pretty good. At the beginning of her part, I didn't really like Daphne, but by the end she had my heart breaking.

It sounded so...broken, and I say it's pretty good. Good job Daphne on this song :)

    As for Roger and Mark...yum!

  • I'm a Rosario fan. I just personally don't like Daphne. I can respect though, that Jonathan Larson picked Daphne for the part, and saw her as HIS vision of Mimi. However, I prefer the softness of Rosario's voice. Personal preference.

  • Rosario's voice is plain vanilla. Daphne is more unique and interesting to me. Scratchy and cute.

  • I prefer Rosario's voice, but Daphne is by no means bad.

  • i love rosario dawson, but i have to admit that daphne was and always will be the perfect mimi.

  • love it!

  • Rent is such an amazing musical. I am such a RENThead. Adam and Anthony have powerful voices. I can't stop listening to the argument between them. =D

  • @reader1001 It's such a shame they left the argument out of the film. It's quite possibly my favorite part of the entire musical.

  • @reader1001 me too

  • I LOVE THE PART WHEN ADAM GOT ALL MAD AT MIMI CLASSIC!! rent fan 4 eva <3

  • I heard the movie soundtrack before this cast recording, so it's been hard for me to get used to Daphne as Mimi rather than Rosario.

But at the end of this song, her voice is so heartbreakingly weak and emotional...she's perfect. And Jonathon cast her, so she's obviously exactly what he wanted for the role.

    Love for the OBC :D

  • I'm really embarrassed to see all the Daphne hate getting thumbs up in these comments. Daphne and Rosario have two very different voices, but Daphne is /amazing/. Whether Rosario has a more melodic, and stereotypically pretty voice or not, /Daphne/ was the original Mimi, and she was how J-Larson wanted her to sound.

It's okay to have preferences, but calling Daphne a bad singer? Not cool.

This recording has so much more emotion than the movie version. The original will always be my favourite.

  • @JudoCreature I agree I really liked Daphne's Goodbye Love it was really emotional

  • @JudoCreature - Exactly. It's supposed to be a rock musical. She has more of a rock voice anyway. Gritty and raw.

  • @JudoCreature I meant to say thumbs up! Poop shit dick tits I feel dumb.

  • @tankatruck1243 xDD I've done that before accidentally. Ain't no thang. ♥

  • @JudoCreature Mimi is supposed to sound the way Daphne does. I admit Rosario is a little easier on the ears, because she is more melodic, but Mimi is supposed to sound that way. She smokes, she's addicted to drugs, she's the perfect MImi. J-Larson had such a brilliant cast. The replacements for the movie were fantastic as well, but I agree with you about the comments about Daphne.

  • @nmwalker23 Protip: Mimi /is/ a crackwhore with a fucked up throat.

  • @JudoCreature I liked her better. She was more raw or something...can't explain it. But the original Mimi and she did a great job!

  • @JudoCreature True, Daphne is amazing. I'm not giving her hate, but I'm gonna say that if Rosario had been in the Original Broadway Performances, I think it would be better. It was spectacular nonetheless. Also, Tracie Thoms can him the high notes better than the original.

  • @JudoCreature You know it is sad to see so many people mistake opinions for fact, and just because people have particular preferences does not mean they should discount other peoples preferences as being bad taste.

I myself don't have a particular favorite Mimi, but I do think they all have tremendous strengths.

  • @JudoCreature thank you!!!!! i mean i lolve them both, but dont hate on daphne becauese you think rosario has the better voice. im too young to have seen the original cast, so ive only been exposed to the movie other than youtube vids like this, and i like daphne better. and yeah, this one has sooo much more emotion in it, as much as i LOVE the movie it doesnt even have the whole version in it :(
