  • the problem with my puppy (a 3,5 month half labrador) is that she is biting my hand when i have the treat, and i cannot teach her to "leave it" or "off"

  • ive got 4 golden retrievers and only the oldest one used to bite me and my family as a puppy (usually your feet)

  • In terms of "Alpha Dog Training", I believe it's training for dogs who innate believe themself to be the Alpha of the "Pack" (that means you and the dog).

Some Dogs are more prone to think of themselves as Alpha immediatly such as Wolfdogs and Husky's.

That's my theory anyhow, although I have no proof of such it believe it to be the case for some Dogs, even though I may be very wrong regarding this and my theories are far-fetched...

  • Hey, great video r usefull, but I want to teach my dog bark on command, can u help me.

  • good tips except for one, never ever ever give ur dog food rewards. example, u teech ur dog to heel whilst in ur yard, he does it great, at the end of every time he gets a little treat. ur at the park or beach, u say heel, u have no treats. dogs are a lot smarter than u think. instead, a simple "good boy" and a pat works much better. think of it like u going to gym, u dont have a big mac afterwards lol

  • don't you understand that the dog after a while learns that he is pleasing you and then the dog will do to please you

  • @88stretched Does it look like he doesn't know how smart that dog is?! LOL Bless your heart. Why don't you get yourself a dictionary and TEACH yourself how to spell rather than preach to a choir.

  • @bornstandin who cares about spelling, its not some essay. and i didn't say he didn't know how smart the dog was, i said he is rewarding the dog in the wrong way. and thanks for the blessing, but i don't believe in things that aren't real champ.

  • Thank you! I have been trying your method out and I am making progress on most of the play biting. However, one area persists and I don't know how to handle it; that is when I am attempting to put on a leash. Every time I do it my dog opens wide and the bite reflex seems to be generated. Clearly, this is a case where disengagement is not possible as I can't just walk away. What to do?

  • Great methods, but WOW, TOO MUCH TALKING!! Tab shows such understanding of dog learning, but little of people learning. Not much is retained by people from verbose lectures and so little demo and visuals. This was 5:59 minutes of constant talking. EDIT thyself! Learn about the powers of concision, summary, bullet points, and visuals.

  • @carmenbuit I'm sorry you didn't find this very useful. I have plenty of tutorials that demonstrate quite clearly the methods addressed in this video. A huge component of learning to train an animal is having the right attitude - which was the target of this particular video. In the meantime, I'd be happy for you to point me to a more useful free video on the subject.

  • @tab289 My GSD pup loves to play. Too rough now when he's bigger. My little brother would just walk in the room and he'll go jump and play bite him. Is there any ways of fixing that?

  • @tab289 Bravo!

  • @carmenbuit Maybe some people just need to work on their entertainment oriented attention span. Might help with dog training, too.

  • @carmenbuit if you're looking for training resources for dogs and can't take 5 minutes to watch a very insightful and helpful video, then maybe you don't have the patience to train a dog effectively.

  • @carmenbuit WOW! If a 5:59 minute lecture is too much for your attention span, you should stick with a pet goldfish.

  • Hey I just subscribed to your channel, I just got a Jack Russell Miniature, he has a teething problem, expected a 8 weeks old and I used your techinques and his slowly learning not to bite people or furniture but his toys

    Thank you very much :D

  • Yeah it's true what you said about the punishment technique, they will still bite other people. A few years ago when a staff came over to me and my mates, it kept jumping up at us with a playful bite. Everytime it did it to me i gave it a smack(not hard) on the head. It stopped doing it to me but still did it to my mates ^_^

  • I loved the video! It`s kind of what I`m doing with my 5 months old Standard Schnauzer. But these days the biting is getting so anoying, that I didn`t know what else to do... Thanks for the tips!

    Greetings from Argentina!

  • you make puppy training seem so easy =(

  • There's this one time his ears raise almost all the way up and it was like he was fighting me... this was one of the times I said no. Can you tell me a sure way to stop him from biting and actually listen to me when I command him?

  • I believe the "ouch" method does not work for my german shepherd puppy, it does seem to him that i'm inviting him to bite harder. He gets even more aggressive when I say no. When I punish him by putting him in the cage, right after he bites, he treats me like I'm his enemy.

  • Love your videos.....shat do I do if she keeps pulling her leash when I try to walk her!!!

  • @roxyr1024

get a command collar, it acts like a choker but it teaches the dog not to pull

  • this give it a chew toy

  • Great video and after looking everywhere for a solution as I have a wolfhound puppy, when I said ouch she though it was fun, and if i smacked her she thought that was an invitation to play harder. I found leaving the area made the most impact. but like you said in your video PATIENCE.., She is 5mths old now and all the bite marks have healed over. she still grabs my hands and arms tight but doesn't break the skin and if she snaps she does so with a closed mouth. I really was at a loss...

  • K so, My dog is a german shepherd. He's not a tiny puppy or a grown dog, he's around middle-aged. I just got him like yesterday, and he's crying whenever I dont go out, than when I do, I pet him alot and just try to walk around with him. Even when I am petting him alot, he still seems to be bothered like he wants something and he gets upset but I dont know what it is? Can you please help? I don't have a dog house yet or toys for him to play with.

  • @elcosu1993 I know I'm probably not the one you want an answer from, but you said you just got your dog yesterday. Even though he's not a small puppy, he was still taken from everything he has known and put into a strange place with strange people. Just give him love and patience. He will soon grow to love you just as much. :)

  • @elcosu1993

Get him chew toys, and soft toys. It'll keep him busy. Get a bully stick, dogs loves them. You need to give him/her good excerise and walk him everyday. Do some training session too

  • i find biting dogs ear work very well when he bites you gently bite his ear and say no biting

  • @arturdrozdz297374 i think you got that from a movie i just forgot witch one

  • @rookiegunner3 Snow dogs! Lol. :P Although, I found out when I was a kid that that really does work on some dogs. I did it to my shephard/rottweiler mix and she quickly knew who was the Alpha and listened to me from then on. She was also very sweet to me, too. Lol. I called her "Cuddles". :)

  • I hope this works for my 1 month old pitbull.

  • Psh my puppy does it on purpose when its bad :/ I don't care what none o y'all say I still give her a lil spank

  • Awasome teacher!!! Ugly man

  • our dog doesent listen to our commands when he bites, and when we try to ignore him and leave for a few minutes, he just follows and starts to bite again. he's 8 mths old, how old will puppies susally stop teething???

  • @chespigreen2 every dogs different but usually there less than a year old

  • Make a video to make the puppy from using the bathroom inside the house.

  • @MrCyclops123

give your dog more time. puppies don't ''go'' in the house without a reason.. they do it because their bladder is not big or strong enough to hold it for too long. when my GSD was young i had to take her every 2h. she wouldnt always ''go'' but at least she had the chance. Whenever she did ''go'', i would reward her and say a command like ''pee''. increase the time between the walks. when the dog ''goes'' in the house say ''NO'' and take him outside and say the ''pee'' again reward

  • how do i train my dog to do a back flip

  • Good video except for tugging suggestion. Playing tug of war increases aggression in dogs prone to it. In any physical contest with a large dog, the human will lose. Instead, give a toy substitute to encourage dog to teeth it, but do not tug on it with the dog. Tugging becomes a competition and allows to dog to think he could potentially "beat" you, which goes against alpha dog training methods.

  • @lyn0202 I don't believe in "alpha dog training methods", whatever that means. Playing tug with a dog can be a very powerful 'currency' which will ultimately be very powerful in training and building a bond with them. It takes only a few minutes to teach them to "let go" when you ask them to. I'm pretty sure I have a video on it somewhere.

  • @lyn0202 I have repeatedly read books that winning at tug can result in dominant 'alpha' behavior and believed the statements even though my own experiences with dogs were exceptions to the rule. Modern research (last 10 years or so) has tested the 'alpha' theory and put serious dents in it's validity. Ditto on the family structure of wolves in their native habitat. I tend to believe recent scientific conclusions simply because they match my personal experience.

  • @lyn0202 this train of thought is old and incorrect

  • tab289 u told me to see this vidoe and it will help well it didnt help my puppy german shepherd wont stop biting i give him toys and every thing i tryed every thing he wont stop he likes biting my hand rather then bites toys

  • We just adopted a 12 week Jack Rusell Terrier and must say he is very violent puppy. He will bite non stop. We had try all we can, but he just don't stop. :( What you think is a good way to have him respond to training?

  • PLEASE HELP!

My dog is a 10 moth old German Shepherd-Border Collie mix. Very smart mix. But as he is getting older his teeth are much sharper and stronger and being the fact that he is mixed with a Shepherd, it really hurts when he bites. I just wanna know if ANYONE can help me out with getting past this little quirk of his before he is to old for me to train.

  • i thought you werent suppose to reprimand a dog after they have behaved negatively. i was told that it is ineffective because dogs do not associate/connect/reflect. i was told that immediate correction is an effective way to stop the dog from continuing the negative action. please advise.

  • My puppy doesn't really play bite he just bites when were sitting, how do I stop this? and I've tried to give him something else to chew on, but he just keeps coming right back to my hand, any suggestion's on how to stop this?

  • I have heard from many positive reinforcement trainers to just "freeze" and not be "reactive". When the fun has stopped, and there is no movement or sound, I believe that they feel that "this isn't very much fun". So, therefore they stop. Also tugging rewards are awesome! You do such a nice job on these videos!! You should check out Susan Garrett's "crate games".

  • i'm gonna try this method out, thanks. :)

  • My German Shepherd pup is only 9 weeks and loves to bite! She loves her Kong, but ankle biting is still a favourite.. is she too young to teach this?!

  • This was very very helpful! Thank you!!

  • Sinbad?

  • i did it by putting peanutbutter on my arm until he learnt to lick not bite

  • Comment removed

  • YOU SHOULDN'T GIVE YOUR DOG A "TIME-OUT" THEY'RE NOT KIDS!!

    JUST LEAVE THE ROOM -__-

  • Peanut butter Kongs fill your dog with protein = energy overload!

  • this didnt help 4 shit. my puppy just kept biting my hand more and more and a bit harder...gawd damn it can someone actually help.

  • can i train an alaskan malamutee

  • Everytime I tell my dog no to not bite something he won't. So he runs away, goes to the laundry basket picks out something he likes and comes back to me chewing on it. I tell him no. So he stops and goes back to the laundry basket and picks another...

  • keep pressing 5 and watch the dog's paw

  • you are the man

  • Hands...the dogs I knew bite our ass lol....

I found that doing a stern NO works for some dogs, its like saying a stern no to little kids, it works sometimes, try it.

  • My dog punishment is touching his nose!, he hates it!

  • Cesar Milan or what.great trainer

  • ur so fukin helpful

i just got a dogo argentino puppy and do not and can not have him biting when he is older

  • i really need help ppl i have a 1 month old german shepherd and he wont stop biting i tried everything i gave him many toys i tryed the ouch method but he wont stop biting i know his playing but some times he can hurt so i really need help

  • @charicebiggestfan

You say your dog is 1 month old?? He should not be away from his mother until he is 7-8 weeks old as she would teach him the basics of good manners. His litter mates would all play rough with him and between them will learn respect.

  • does this work on 4 month old germen sheperd

  • Imma try this on my german sheperd. He only bite when hes playing and im trying to work on that now. I hand feed my puppy and he doesnt bite at all but only play time. Hope this method works. Thanks

  • Really good advice!

  • i've given my dog a bunch of peanut butter stuffers but she keeps barrying them :/ and i can never find them!

  • I have a 2 month old German Shepherd, he's a bitter!!.....he normaly doesnt bite me, but he bites my little sisters....im going to try this, hopefully it works.

  • @tab289 Uhmm when you say the command off. do you repeatedly say it and once the dog reacts the way you want, you then press the clicker and give the dog a treat or do you say it once the dog stops for a second and then use the clicker and treat?

  • Well my 6 month Rottie just bit my fucking hand while I was trying to pat him while he was eating, he's been really aggressive while he eats and now bites while he eats now what should I do about it?

  • @18rjos you should give it space while he eats. if hes playing and bites then yeah thats a big no no but once they eat, stay away. its completely normal as their instincts are kicking in

  • @18rjos ...Don't pet him while he is eating. Its meal time not play time and just as your dinner should be respected so should his.

  • @18rjos its just a symptom of a cause. You need to work on your dog in all other areas before adressing this issue. My Rottie has been trained from the day I got her that #1 I am the fair leader who provides the food and fun playtime and am to be respected and completely trusted. I have never done anything to betray her trust and love. #2 That feeding time is a calm relaxed social time that should be enjoyed slowly with the human there or not. I feed raw food and can walk up to her and take it.

  • @18rjos dont listen to people telling you to just give him his food and leave him alone. You pay his food bill he shouldnt be biting the hand that feeds him. He is still a pup and not too late to correct him. Do not punish him it will just cause anxiety and make things worse. Go to a proffessional trainer. Do not use anger, frustration or physical correction to correct him.

  • My German Shepherd puppy bites so much, he loves to bite on everything, and he's only 4 months old :( He even bites some of the pipes that run water to my house. and he still keeps on doing it. What could I do? It's like he has rabies or something, but obviously he doesn't and I gave him rabies shots.. So thats what really matters

  • Well i have a 1mth old pitbull n hes a stubern lil pup ..but ill try this ..

  • Simply professional!

  • Our puppy is doing very well for day 6 of training (9.5 weeks old), but I do have this biting problem with him especially around my 3 and 4 year old. I really like the thorough explanation and I think I was doing many right things, but need to correct a few minor things...hopefully it will work!

  • you should have your own dog whisperer show!

  • Wow just tried the "off" concept on my 10 month old pitbull and it actually worked

  • Planning on getting a german shepherd fall 2012. I want one like yours. Your shepherd is so adorable. I will definatly be using your advice on training. You have a well behaved dog.

  • You are theSuper Nanny of dogs. So helpful!

  • This video was a big help. Thank you.

  • You know almost every of my comments get most liked :D

  • i might be getting a GSD for christmas i want one so much

  • @vancouvercanucks23 I just got one!!! I hope the best for you get one.

  • The command works great and he picks it up perfectly, but the issue is more when my 10 weeks old gsd pup gets hyper, its like he doesn`t even hear my voice or the command, in a calm state he is amazing at it but when he gets hyper there is no stopping him, any advice?

p.s. your vids are really cool

  • Great tips but do you have any for a very small puppy, we have a 7 week old pup and the excitable and hyper moments he has are getting worse with the play biting and are sore, i know he is small but i realy want to keep on top of this habit he has and have got toys etc for him to play with but he still insists on biting our skin, i know he proberly is to young to understand alot but if you jae any tips i would appreciate them, thanks amanda

  • I love the time out !! I think it works

  • i want your dog

  • I have no dog n im watching this .-.

  • @IMGalleta same here

  • @IMGalleta but I love dogs thats why I am watching it

  • @doctoranan Yeah i love dogs too:D im gonna get a JackRussellTerrier the 29 of January

  • @IMGalleta see, I wanna buy one but I have problem with pure breeding of the dog

I found a store that bring the ordinary one with the guarantee of the pure breed but it is expensive and double the prices outside (aprox $2500)

and he can get the champion breed for me by $5000

they bring them from Europe (with europian passport and his family tree and all the vexation)

other places sell them by $1000 but they bring them from Russia

    what do you think?

  • @doctoranan Well , They are 3 types of Jack Russell

Jack Russell Standar from England (short legs)

and the Parson jack russell (long legs)

I think you should ask which jack russell is that they are selling .. I prefer the standar JRT . Im in Peru and they are more cheap . but they only sell the standar .

Im gonna buy mine with out PEDIGREE .

    Jack Russell Parson from

  • I want to first start off by saying your awesome!!! I have watched almost all of your videos & they have worked out awesome!! I have a question/concern about my puppy. He is a 5 month old lab/pitt mix & one of the main issues I was having with him was biting. Not so much anymore except when I go 2 put on his leash or I'm untangling the leash from around his feet. I dont understand why he does it. He don't do it when I take the leash off, only when I'm putting it on. Any suggestions? Thank u

  • i love your videos! you're awesome! thanks for all the tips and i am SO glad you touched on the 'ouch' method not working b/c i tried it with my dog and it just makes things worse.

  • Oh boy! I need this guy to come to my house! My puppy is incredibly stubborn! He will back off from the treats, but...how long do I do this until he stops without needing the treats? He doesn't listen to me unless he knows he will get a treat.

  • to me ur a geniour ahahah very helpful videos

  • I really like this method, I am hoping that it works with the biting, but for now, I'm just happy to see her back off the hand full of treats. Very creative. I'll chime in again if it ends up helping the nipping and biting.

  • do you mind translate your videos to spanish? i understand somthings but not everything and i want to teach my dog the best that i can . please help me

  • im gonna try the "off" method, right now i do the crate thing because it seems like its the only way he will stop and i have a lot of marks on my hands from him biting if i even slightly move my hand around him >_>

  • my puppy recently began barking at her reflection in the window because she thinks it's another dog. She is normally extremely quiet but it really irritates her. I'm not really sure how to teach her not to do this.

  • my pup is jumping and biting the middle of my arm! she is not teething! she is a freaking shark! I keep bleeding if I let her touch me!!! when I call her she bites me and runs away because she knows I am going to hold her if she bites! I hold her now because it has gotten to far... she keeps biting me and when I punish her its for 30 minuits! not 1 like long time ago! she never learns! this wasn't profecional her, any more of this and I will give her away! better than hurting her I guess...

  • @Crashbandicoot701 please I suggest taking her to a shelter because a puppy will be adopted quick and if a kill shelter do not take her try putting butter cold that is on you arm she will lick instead and how old and what breed it will help me help you easier reply back and I will make a video for better easier to give info

  • @AmericanPitbulls1 I dont know what btter cold means, but I got a sour throught and my voice is gone D: I thought dos are supposed to be smart, but this one is an absolute idiot D: she is a german sheppard.... she loves ripping apart tissues and all sorts of stuff, how do I make her punishment evil? tape her up in a box and put her in the washing machine for a day or 2? yes, she is really that evil.... I sometimes feel like tieing her feet and put her in the bathtup and a plank over her head.

  • @Crashbandicoot701 um I said put cold butter rubbed on your arm she will lick and will be rewarded after with a treat for being nice and try exercising her throwing toys going on walks and yes dogs are very smart especially her breed they are very stubborn sometimes how old is she dogs can teeth till the age of 5 months and for ripping things get a Kong or some kind of toy to occupy her or a crate it will cost a little money but will help and do not punish her by putting her up you can give her

  • @Crashbandicoot701 a quick pop on the nose when she bites not to hard cause it can kill them if hit directly on the nose but more the snout and then say in a firm voice NO or NO NO and yes I know the feeling of wanting to kill them sometimes oh and remember to take her places if not she will be very aggressive made that mistake and takes a long time to turn it around and handle her frequently it will reduce the nipping hope it helps I recommend asking your vet for nipping tips she will help

  • @AmericanPitbulls1 I always flick her nose, never thought that can kill a dog.... still now I dont feel like really killing her, but I want her to stay away from me. Take her place? I aint gonna bite myself.

Hey, is it okay if they saw her teeth until they become dull? What does nipping mean? and that reminds me of something, what is cat nip?

  • @Crashbandicoot701 well herding dogs are very mouthy such as the german Shepard, and yes it can kill a dog not to detailed on how but it can, if you want you space just let out a loud noise of any kind it tells a dog HEY STAY AWAY OR I BITE and they back away,Take her out to meet other people and dogs it will settle her some, and no they cant saw a dogs teeth if you want them dull give her sticks carrots never something hard enough she can sharpen then but something pretty firm so her teeth sink

  • @Crashbandicoot701 oh yeah nipping is a term used for biting puppies nip dogs bite if she is serious when biting I dont like to say this but try dominating her by pinning her down till she gives up you will become alpha male or female not sure which you are haha oh cat nip is made of a plant and is very pleasant smelling and tasting to a cat hope this round helps

  • @AmericanPitbulls1 I tried pinning her down more than 5 times for over an hour, she just cries and bites very hard! I am usualy at school and I dont have much time to spend with her, is it because I am always gone? or she hurting herself, my mom is always angry at her, maybe because she is getting hurt from humans? How patient am I supposed to be with a GSD.

Is it okay to get her teeth to get sawed until they become dull or will she have eatting problems or tooth ache problems?

  • @Crashbandicoot701 I can see that you do love her for the time and training you have tried there is on other thing I just now thought of works most the time if you are playing or whatever when she bites you turn around stand up or whatever and just stand there till she stops if she continues to bite just turn around again and dont turn quick as that makes her want to chase just calmly turn around and when she stops say good girl but not in a baby voice in your normal voice

  • @Crashbandicoot701 you can also get a choke chain or slip lead as it is sometimes labeled and when she bites give a quick tug towards the side she will stop and think for the first few tries so I have one other piece of advice you dont have much time right run with her on a leash and tire her to a tired dog is a happy dog as we say in the dog world haha it is very much true I suggest looking up a video on how to fit a choke chain or the proper use it is very much needed

  • i love your tutorials this really helps me

  • hey man i have 8 week old german shephard siberian husky mix. she knows how to sit lay down roll over and stay. my problem is. is i always have to point in order for her to do what i want. how do i get her to do it with out pointing

  • If you don't recommend the "ouch" approach, how do you teach the puppy bite inhibition, especially if you are encouraging hard biting on the tug toy?

  • urgh long video

  • i have a 10 week old pit bull and i want to train him, do you recomend hand gestures or voice comamnds ? My old pitbull that died a year ago responded to sit stay rolover shake paw, with vioce commands and no hand gesture, do u recomend this or should i also incorperate hand jesture?

  • eww cats

  • My dog is not treat/food motivated he is an 8 week old lab puppy and i have trained him to sit, stay, get bussy (pee on command), use the dog door to pee and come back in, not cry in his crate, heel, come, and walk well on leash with distractions. I have had him for a week. I have fostered and owned many dogs. They were all food motivated this one just doesnt care for it. Any advice? He is very well behaved but it is soo much harder to train him when he doesnt care for food.

  • Hold a fist full of treats out to a puppy that likes to bite - yes, brilliant, my hand got gnawed on! And now my dog thinks my hand tastes like kibble and keeps biting me!

  • Isn't psychology amazing?

  • Isn't psychology amazing?

  • I command our GS to "leave it" and he does!! (:

  • I was directed to this video.., and while I agree with you in principle, you aren't using a puppy in this video, rather a adolescent.

8-14 weeks old is a good wheel house to show the puppy bite.

    But over all, good info.

    Cheers'

  • HELP my dog wont go on walks because he is scared of the leash! please reply!

  • my dog is 9 nearly 10 months old is it too late to teach him (please, please answer)

  • @MrJoe725 No because i saw on mythbusters they taught 2 dogs each 5 years old all the basic tricks so no.

  • the ouch method soooo does not work

  • My dog is 1 year old is it too late to use this on her?

  • Thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge. My dog and I are learning a lot and having a great time while training.

  • I have watched most of your videos. My dog and I are learning a lot!!! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Not only we're learning how to behave but also having a great time training.

  • you are genius my friend

  • ok thank

  • would the "ouch " method work for german sheperds

  • @joel35547 no use google translate the word "Ouch" in german!

  • why are you waring earings

  • My puppy bit my neighbours hoop earings, and almost tore her earlobes out :/

  • I used tobasco to get my other German Shephard "Panzer" to stop licking or biting me..

  • hi tab, buddy u aint respondin these querries,,,,plz take sum tym out to teach them what they wish coz it really making difference, to a layman lyk me.....so plz repy

  • Tab289 most of your videos are effective but the command leave it or stop biting dosent work on my dog, ive got an 6 months old staffordshire bull terrier his really clever but everytime someone comes into our house he gets exited and bites our hands , sleeves, Trouses and shoes and i just cant teach him to leave it or to stop biting and the second thing he is a strong dog and he pulls on the lead and after a 20min walk my hand really hurts so Please help ;) waiting for a reply

  • @Ximuss12 It sounds mean but you can put a drop of hot sauce on their tongue right after they bite but only if it is really really bad.

  • My dog is a 16 week black labrador, and when we tell her NO! she knows she is doing something bad and she gets all hyped up and jumps around barking and biting. So I hope this works.......

  • Now this is something that might help me teach my puppy Nala not to bite. she keeps biting my breast ((i'm female)) but she's several months old. Normally what my family does is grab her jaw shut, works for them, but some reason it doesn't work for me. infact she thinks i'm playing when i do that

  • my german shephard is a year old and likes to nibble when i pet him. like when i rub his belly or his head he gets playful and wants to bite
