wow! this is so much easier to do than you are doing it! side chaining is an absolutely great way to add motion to your mix but there is much easier way of doing this than you are doing it.
OR, open a compressor in the track you want to make "pulse", usually the bass/melody. click the arrow in the top left. activate the sidechain, and choose your kick from the drop down menu. then lower the threshold a bit to make it stand out more. what this does is lower the volume of the track whenever the kick hits, meaning you can hear it better and its not drowned out. Abletons compressor is good enough. if its not up to your standard, you should know this anyway, this is basic stuff.
well i wasted 10 minutes of my life watching this and i can say the only people ur impressing are the noobs haha ur a looser dude stop copying people with ur so called "complex melody" lmao most of deadmau5 stuff suck used to be cool but i think his a sell out now his all mainstream and makes music for fagots in the clubs i think haha so girly all soft and tender hah fuck off
I know you guys make these tutorials "live". but it would be much better to prepare some script/scenario before to make it. that is: in the beginning you say something like "aaammm mmmm" looong spaces between talking.
sincerely, I do not have so much time to listen to these mmm's and waiting for your thinking what to say next. I switched it off after one minute.
please think about preparing some script that you can read fast before to make next tutorial.
@JuKimuka the sidechain doesnt REMOVE the notes on the beat, it just supresses them creating a "fade in, fade out" effect which is really fucking cool btw...if you just didnt have the notes there and didnt use a sidechain you would just get a "note on, note off" thing going which doesnt make a cool effect.
Side-chaining also allows for an array of really cool sound effects, especially when doing filter sweeps and adding effects like reverb or delay.
@seanross25 My point exactly! Why put the midi notes there if you only want to suppress them? The midi notes were 1/16th, the result was a 1/8th. Just a waste of good fx in my opinion and the time it took to set up.
@seanross25 Oh I get the point :-) It's fun though, but not what one would do when working on a complex arrangement that requires efficient use of processing power - the best solution in this case is to fix the arrangement. I'm a big fan of side-chaining but I would skip this one and reserve it for deserving situations.
@seanross25 Oh I get the point :-) It's fun though, but not what one would do when working on a complex arrangement that requires efficient use of processing power - the best solution in this case is to fix the arrangement. I'm a big fan of side-chaining but I would skip this one and reserve it for deserving situations.
@JuKimuka Because it doesn't just get rid of the sound. It fades it in and out according to the peak of the controlling sound. It's a fancy fading effect and it eliminates a lot of legwork. Just removing notes would create a chop effect that doesn't sound anything like it would when created through sidechaining.
@wartornpanda This effect is good on sustained sounds. Hi-hats are a very poor example because you will not get a pulsing effect - try a sustained bass sound or a synth sound and trigger the sidechain with the kick or hi-hat - that would be a kickass use of sidechaining - a la french house style! But if you just want tight arrangement, use the Ableton groove presets.
in live7 you dont need the tricky way as you wrote in the intro, just open the comp , tell him which channel has to be the pilot , and tweak it . cheers
The vst sidechain compressor from your download caused my Ableton Live to severely crash on startup. Just wanted to let you know. Otherwise, great tutorial!
Whats with the hate lol. This here sounds to me like a really nice guys putting out a FREE video to try to help out in any way he can. Dont pick so many holes in things, if you know better you post a vid and help too.
Yo man, i have been really happy with the sound i've been gettin recently, but you have totally hit the nail on the head! You can totally see that its the side chaining of almost all the channels creatin that deamau5 style sound. Wickd video man.
@tchekitout That sidechain is a freeware u can download, abletone also has a inbuilt sidechain. Dont be so bloody rude here man, haters like you have no place in music production, or anywhere else. For the others who want to know how to make a sidechain, just search for "how to make a sidechain in abletone" and ul find out, the freeware used in this vid is named "Sidechcomp" google it, and ul find it
If you want to get a sidechain effect without messing around with compression check our CamelPhat by Came Audio. You can put an LFO on the volume and get a similiar effect. It's a great VST.
@FruityLoopsas very true, although I have definitely noticed that Ableton Live has a wider sound stage from the get go, not so in your face as Fruity Loops. Fruity loops to me, although being a very good DAW, always sounds so mono (from the get go).
Don't get me wrong both are very good DAW's, I think Ableton just sounds more professional.
(ps, please don't call me an idiot for having an opinion, especially when its from a decade of experience, cheers).
@jimmyjfx Tru. But every DAW has a method of producing sound on a software level, a base level processing configuration, in other words even though you may be using the same VSTs you are using a different peice of software to produce the sound, hense the difference in sound. Try it yourself, you will notice a difference.
@jimmyjfx . i disagree, other than logic and its ability to have hifi surrond its more like this guys knows what hes talking about minus him knowing how to explain it.
sidchaining threw compressors makes a world of difference. clarity without maxing out your tracks and limiters.
as long as there is a full 24 to 64 bit hi def and proper synth intruments the daw isn't the culprit for shitty sound. Its usually people have production knowledge the sound is great.
its a type of compression. usually you sidechain the kick into the bass sounds that way the bass gets compressed when the kick is sounding. it makes the kick sit more cleanly in the low end because its louder than the bass sound. it gives a sort of breathing or pumping sound to the bass track.

Does anyone know of a decent atmosphere torrent? these VSTs are unbelievably expensive, they cost more then most DAWS platforms :P a bit ridiculous imo.

thanks so much for this tutorial man, it really helped me to finally get what the big deal is with sidechaining automation. your song is fucking awesome too =D
This video cracks me up. You've definitely done a good job demonstrating the sidechain compression despite the fact that you don't seem familiar with any of the proper names for the controls of the program or much of the composition of the music you're making. I mean this sincerely!
You're actually right. It's funny I've been making music for over 15 years now, released on prestigeous labels but form some reason I feel like everytime I make a song is the first time. Maybe that's a way to keep the creative flow?

So you add the effect and choose source audio, and you make settings and it adds "pumping" to the sound (like the drums in the source)

Hi there !
Nice tuto :) no luck with your bassline ahah !
A comment : you can hear the kick without using an external channel (The C channel in your tuto).
In the sidechcomp plugin, just turn on/max the "Keyvolume" button (the last on the right). You should hear the kick (the insert in real ...).
Did you try live 8.0 with this plugin ? i cant make it working anymore :(
See you !
May the vibe be with You !
