  • nice tutorail but stupid voice very frustraiting...

  • wow! this is so much easier to do than you are doing it! side chaining is an absolutely great way to add motion to your mix but there is much easier way of doing this than you are doing it.

  • please explain, how do you have the whole kick/side chain/ c return set up? i am beyond confused.

  • Amazing! I love this!

  • GET YOUR THOUGHTS TOGETHER, WRITE THEM DOWN

  • laid backluke?

  • dude are you that guy from that star trek movie?

  • @donarmando420 wiktor

  • omfg i love you man ! i had trouble whit this shit in fl studio but here u show it so well i think i gonna get this program and delete fl -.-

  • @Cobub1 it's alot easier in fl lol

  • Dude what is the program u use?

  • you didn't even know the most basic chords ever.. C, E, G lol

  • Been hearing about side-chaining a lot... now I see why. Do you just sidechain every track?

  • @kingmikeofthenorth u should, so that your kicks can come through just don't over do it

  • use better terms. ie: accent instead of "groove". just speak better english. and you dont explain detail for shit brotha. better luck next time.

  • OR, open a compressor in the track you want to make "pulse", usually the bass/melody. click the arrow in the top left. activate the sidechain, and choose your kick from the drop down menu. then lower the threshold a bit to make it stand out more. what this does is lower the volume of the track whenever the kick hits, meaning you can hear it better and its not drowned out. Abletons compressor is good enough. if its not up to your standard, you should know this anyway, this is basic stuff.

  • well i wasted 10 minutes of my life watching this and i can say the only people ur impressing are the noobs haha ur a looser dude stop copying people with ur so called "complex melody" lmao most of deadmau5 stuff suck used to be cool but i think his a sell out now his all mainstream and makes music for fagots in the clubs i think haha so girly all soft and tender hah fuck off

  • Thanks mate very cool! Can you do that with live' compressor?

  • Thanks mate very cool! Can you do that with live' compressor?

  • thanks!

  • lol....

    "idear"....?

  • haha, what a shit tutorial

  • my mind is full of fuck. im beyond confused.

  • @JdoubleA2 lol my thoughts, too

  • I know you guys make these tutorials "live". but it would be much better to prepare some script/scenario before to make it. that is: in the beginning you say something like "aaammm mmmm" looong spaces between talking.

sincerely, I do not have so much time to listen to these mmm's and waiting for your thinking what to say next. I switched it off after one minute.

please think about preparing some script that you can read fast before to make next tutorial.

  • hey mate, you have the kick on the return channel. This might be a noOb question, but how did you get a wave file onto the return track?

  • My latest Remix (Kaskade ft Deadmau5 - Move For ME (Colorboxmusic remix) is played at BLOradio yesterday !!!! Im so happy =DDD

Check it out on my channel!

  • compress that snare

  • Very nice! I have to try this technique. Thanks!

  • My favorite part about this video is how you didn't show how to sidechain, you just talked about what side-chaining is for 10 minutes.

  • sidechain in pro tools

  • great work

  • your the man

  • your the man

  • By the way, wouldn't it be easier for you to remove the notes on the beat rather than having the side-chain do it for you?

  • @JuKimuka the sidechain doesnt REMOVE the notes on the beat, it just supresses them creating a "fade in, fade out" effect which is really fucking cool btw...if you just didnt have the notes there and didnt use a sidechain you would just get a "note on, note off" thing going which doesnt make a cool effect.

Side-chaining also allows for an array of really cool sound effects, especially when doing filter sweeps and adding effects like reverb or delay.

  • @seanross25 My point exactly! Why put the midi notes there if you only want to suppress them? The midi notes were 1/16th, the result was a 1/8th. Just a waste of good fx in my opinion and the time it took to set up.

  • @JuKimuka apparently you don't get the point i was getting at...i digress.

  • @seanross25 Oh I get the point :-) It's fun though, but not what one would do when working on a complex arrangement that requires efficient use of processing power - the best solution in this case is to fix the arrangement. I'm a big fan of side-chaining but I would skip this one and reserve it for deserving situations.

  • @JuKimuka Because it doesn't just get rid of the sound. It fades it in and out according to the peak of the controlling sound. It's a fancy fading effect and it eliminates a lot of legwork. Just removing notes would create a chop effect that doesn't sound anything like it would when created through sidechaining.

  • @wartornpanda This effect is good on sustained sounds. Hi-hats are a very poor example because you will not get a pulsing effect - try a sustained bass sound or a synth sound and trigger the sidechain with the kick or hi-hat - that would be a kickass use of sidechaining - a la french house style! But if you just want tight arrangement, use the Ableton groove presets.

  • You're very funny, you also know what you're doing - so thumbs up to you man!

  • Hi guys could somebody explain me what is side chain? Thanks!

  • I'm a beginner at this Ableton stuff... i have no idea how to even start a song up... help anyone?

  • @djhayatix me too

  • thhks...fr this tutorial....i lik it

  • Where can i get this program called "Live"?

  • @djhayatix it's ableton live.. on ableton.com is a trail.. but you have to buy it later.. for good results.

  • @pascalRoyalofficial oh ok! thanks friend :D

  • @djhayatix you can buy it on the Ableton website. it runs from 250 ish to 450 ish depending on the package.

  • you should post a vid of just the screen and the song, how you mix it, without any talking or anything ;)

i really like the beat and the melody!

your accent is pretty good, don't worry about it ;)

  • Program name is Live?

I liked this video, keep it going :)

  • but mau5 is FL

  • @ChristophMC deadmau5 is producing and performing with ableton Live ;)

  • good

  • i sidechained the wobble bass in a dubstep song that i just made and it sounds great

  • tip: the sound quality sucks if you dont set the video quality above 480p

  • please help me..where can i set up the release from a sound in omnisphere ???

  • @ 6:52 why goes the sounds so forward on this time? you dont talk about that

  • in live7 you dont need the tricky way as you wrote in the intro, just open the comp , tell him which channel has to be the pilot , and tweak it . cheers

  • sidechäääää- sidechain ^^haha great tut!

  • Would love to know how to do that sound in FL Studio (as in, what synth etc) with the melody.. Nice video though

  • @TeehPimp don't use fl studio

  • @RockerDuk fl studio is een prima progje

  • @TeehPimp Use Wasp & Gross Beat (gross beat allows you to use sidechain:) )

  • Brilliant - instant subscribe.

PS: do you know how fatboy slim does the slowing down effect in the middle of the 'funk soul brother' song?

  • Comment removed

  • @Andybaby tapestop i guess . try the one form tin brooke is for free just google tbt tapestop

  • Pineal Gland!!

  • cool, I've always applied sidechain compression to bass or saw synth only, I'm gonna try it on hihats, and other synths now. Thx man!

  • cool, I've always applied sidechain compression to bass or saw synth only, I'm gonna try it on hihats, and other synths now. Thx man!

  • fantasizing about bass due to this man's outlook. lol.

  • hey guy,

    nice work on that topic...

i got a question: within this sidechain-routing is it possible to use any compressor or do i have to use only a compressor with sidechain-ability???

    thx...

  • oye amigo

    eres un buen compositor! :D

  • The vst sidechain compressor from your download caused my Ableton Live to severely crash on startup. Just wanted to let you know. Otherwise, great tutorial!

  • this is much easier in ableton 8 :D

  • That sounds really good, I can see you becoming big!!

  • This is why I like European people

  • is this live 7? because you can use sidechain compression with a built in device on live 8 instead if an isolated vst.

  • I love your videos :)

  • Really liked this video :)

  • nice!..deadmau5 has to b freaking smart if he duz that stuff and so are you!..:)

  • Thank you so much. You don't even know :)

  • fuckin awesome

  • Whats with the hate lol. This here sounds to me like a really nice guys putting out a FREE video to try to help out in any way he can. Dont pick so many holes in things, if you know better you post a vid and help too.

  • wow really nice job. If you were to make this as a track though I am guessin goyu would just record it in ableton?

  • Yo man, i have been really happy with the sound i've been gettin recently, but you have totally hit the nail on the head! You can totally see that its the side chaining of almost all the channels creatin that deamau5 style sound. Wickd video man.

  • Hey Lumina, what synth or plug in were you using to get that mau5 style sound?

  • @zmbluesjr Apmosphere

  • ahahha i like this video and your accent, sounds like you struggle with english lol

  • How'd u make the synth u used in the video?

  • i like your thinking but its kind of hard to understand your tut lol

  • i really like this nice house groove

  • is this for mac or pc

  • it's ableton...

    which is both

  • Amazing sound

  • Nice one. :)

  • Thats Freakin' Nice !

  • Dude, You are awesome! Great tutorial. Thank You. Look forward to More. Grab a beer & get to work :)

  • @tchekitout That sidechain is a freeware u can download, abletone also has a inbuilt sidechain. Dont be so bloody rude here man, haters like you have no place in music production, or anywhere else. For the others who want to know how to make a sidechain, just search for "how to make a sidechain in abletone" and ul find out, the freeware used in this vid is named "Sidechcomp" google it, and ul find it

  • woah amazing at 6:45

  • i agree, i love resonance tweaks

  • realy easy to do !!

  • NICE

  • If you want to get a sidechain effect without messing around with compression check our CamelPhat by Came Audio. You can put an LFO on the volume and get a similiar effect. It's a great VST.

  • I've been using LFO to make a similar effect, but sidechaining sounds so much better IMHO. I use LFO because I'm a n00b X'(

I'm hoping a few more of these tutorials and I won't be =-D

  • Hey dude, i was wondering.

    1. What exactly did you do when u said " use the filter" in about 6.26?

    2. How did you get the sidechain channel in and so on?

  • nevermind about question 2, i've got it. Still wondering about the filter though.

    Thanks

  • dont understand everything if you are going to explaine plss do it from the very top like how to put the sidechain channel and everything

  • fuckin awesome man just started using live because it has a better sound - much appreciated and you crack me up!

  • @andypandy54321 Sound does not depend on soft ;) Sound depends on mastering you make ;) sidechain is one of the mastering tools ;)

  • @FruityLoopsas very true, although I have definitely noticed that Ableton Live has a wider sound stage from the get go, not so in your face as Fruity Loops. Fruity loops to me, although being a very good DAW, always sounds so mono (from the get go).

Don't get me wrong both are very good DAW's, I think Ableton just sounds more professional.

(ps, please don't call me an idiot for having an opinion, especially when its from a decade of experience, cheers).

  • @andypandy54321 better sound? its just a different DAW

  • @jimmyjfx Tru. But every DAW has a method of producing sound on a software level, a base level processing configuration, in other words even though you may be using the same VSTs you are using a different peice of software to produce the sound, hense the difference in sound. Try it yourself, you will notice a difference.

  • @jimmyjfx unless you're using reason ;)

  • @jimmyjfx noob.

  • @jimmyjfx . i disagree, other than logic and its ability to have hifi surrond its more like this guys knows what hes talking about minus him knowing how to explain it.

sidchaining threw compressors makes a world of difference. clarity without maxing out your tracks and limiters.

as long as there is a full 24 to 64 bit hi def and proper synth intruments the daw isn't the culprit for shitty sound. Its usually people have production knowledge the sound is great.

  • i have it btw :) its 4 freee on google :)

  • whar compresor u use? tnx

  • @MrGenzetti it doesnt really matter

  • @MrGenzetti look for db compressor its gud

  • Thanks for a good video :)

    Merry Christmas from norway

  • hi.. first of all greatttttt song! really good!

Where can i get those great plug ins and sounds.. mine are really crappy! lol

  • Damn, thanks a lot. I am actually considering to try Abletone Live out. ^_^

  • This is an awesome tutorial but I'm confused as to how to get the sidechain compression under the "Audio To" pull down menu. Anyone help?

  • theres an arrow next to the bypass button in the compressor. click it to open the sidechain window

  • prefer fl studio

  • Comment removed

  • that's awesome man, thanks

  • TAHO rulezz! digital dancer EP is my favorite!!!

  • you are my idol keep making vids like this!

  • Thank u very much for this tutorial. I made my first deadMau5 style song right after i saw it. Check it out :)

  • nice work man. great sound.

  • 1000 times I heard from sidechain.

But until today I don't know what it is.

Can anybody tell me, what it is, please?

  • You need a drum pattern or something for source audio.

So you add the effect and choose source audio, and you make settings and it adds "pumping" to the sound (like the drums in the source)

  • GOOGLE :D

  • its a type of compression. usually you sidechain the kick into the bass sounds that way the bass gets compressed when the kick is sounding. it makes the kick sit more cleanly in the low end because its louder than the bass sound. it gives a sort of breathing or pumping sound to the bass track.

  • Cool techniques man. Haven't seen anyone do it that way yet. But just out of curiosity, why don't you just use a compressor as an insert on any given track you want to give that pumping sound to and set the sidechain to your kick? Does your method give a different or "better" sound?

  • very nice man... music sounds great too

  • Ableton 7 + has its own sidechain vst

  • Wtf lol!

    I don;t even udnerstand it

  • ahahahahahaahah!

  • I love you. You just made my day, i now have inspiration

  • best sidechain tutorial on youtube.... sidechaining is much easier in live 7 and 8

  • how you record the sidechain effect? o.o

  • Oh errrrm, one thing...which sidechain VST are you using? will any do?

  • Ableton is for both PC and MAC

  • Is That On Mac or PC??!!

  • Im pretty curtain it's a PC since he always refers to the "ctrl key" when doing various commands.

  • benny benassi uses this a lot, i love this effect!

  • I SUPER AGREE !

  • great video, just got the side VST and the Atmosphere VST, far ages i was trying to get that clear cut minimal trancey sound and with this i finally got it, thanks a million

  • wicked

  • Great Broh! Many Thanks...its good to known that theres people that stil shares the know how!!!

  • Kick ass video ... thank you

  • great man!!!! THX

  • thanks so much.... that was great

  • Ahh so thats how i get that sound!!! :D thank u sooo much dude! well in! :)

Ive bin Addicted to that sound since

Swedish House Mafia Where Born :D

    thanks man!

    Great Vid! :D

  • Dude Im a Logic user, and you dont explain how to set up feeding the sidechain channel or how you set anything up.

All you explain really is how to get the kick heard when your feeding it to the compressor. You dont even explain 3/4 of the steps here. tisk tisk

  • Wow!!this song sounds like pryda...amazing!!!

  • Does anyone know of a decent atmosphere torrent? these VSTs are unbelievably expensive, they cost more then most DAWS platforms :P a bit ridiculous imo.

Wonderfully clear tutorial btw, thanks for helping the community-

  • google it man!!!

You will definately find what you want....

  • thanks so much for this tutorial man, it really helped me to finally get what the big deal is with sidechaining automation. your song is fucking awesome too =D

  • hey is that u... sebastian ???

  • did you upgrade the cpu yet? ' )

  • great job and very well put. really good.

    tnx

  • cool tutorial man!

  • This video cracks me up. You've definitely done a good job demonstrating the sidechain compression despite the fact that you don't seem familiar with any of the proper names for the controls of the program or much of the composition of the music you're making. I mean this sincerely!

  • You're actually right. It's funny I've been making music for over 15 years now, released on prestigeous labels but form some reason I feel like everytime I make a song is the first time. Maybe that's a way to keep the creative flow?

  • @LuminaChannel You have no idea how comforting that is to know, man.

  • Great Tutorial, Really Nice!!

    Thnx!

  • Hi there !

Nice tuto :) no luck with your bassline ahah !

A comment : you can hear the kick without using an external channel (The C channel in your tuto).

In the sidechcomp plugin, just turn on/max the "Keyvolume" button (the last on the right). You should hear the kick (the insert in real ...).

Did you try live 8.0 with this plugin ? i cant make it working anymore :(

    See you !

May the vibe be with You !

  • awesome tut..and nice song with basic components..how simpler how nicer ;)

  • this song is so sweet
