Anyone know if any bullion coins have ever been faked using tungsten. Or any $20 or $10 American gold pieces. It should be very hard to do. But is so, which bullion coins would be the most difficult. Another insurance against fakes besides buying in smaller non-profitable sizes like 1 oz is to buy gold from a national mint. Like a Canadian Gold Maple Leaf, American Eagle or S Africa Kreuger's. They mint in 1 oz coins or smaller and certify their purity. If these mints have any integrity they will also prosecute anyone with fakes that they come across so as not to taint the prestige and good name of the mint. That's not to say it's a guarantee against fakes.
Buy 1 oz or smaller bars and coi8ns, and you will have no problems...It costs much more than 1 oz of gold to forge a 1 oz coin or bar from tungsten......

Testing a gold bar, tungsten-cored or not, with a magnet, will tell you nothing.
@gregblanchardnz A tungsten core inside could easily be detected by the conductivity, as gold has low resistance and tungsten is far higher resistance mearly placing a potential voltage across a bar and measuring the current then comparing it to a known good bar would detect a fake. Also tungsten will conduct sound differently to gold so mearly tapping the bar and watching it resonate on an osilliscope then comparing it to a known real bar would make a fake easy to detect.

The key is to buy from a reputable dealer, and it might get to the point where you need to get your own testing equipment, including Fisch testers.

I don't know what the exact dimensions of the bars are but there you have it, a difference of 140 g.

Anyone know if any bullion coins have ever been faked using tungsten. Or any $20 or $10 American gold pieces. It should be very hard to do. But is so, which bullion coins would be the most difficult. I know the Canadian 1 oz Maple Leaf is so thick and should be the least difficult if possible. I buy bullion coins and I do get worried.

Gold is as good but wont rise as much as bulkier silver which is harder to hide. Tungsten bars from the Bush-Greenspan-Clinton era are mostly large bars only a few of which accidentally got shipped out to Red China by mistake. Buy from reliable suppliers with their own assay and foundries and don't trust unboxed coins. Ask for receipts of original purchase if buying privately. Tungsten sounds different. more hollowish ring to it.

An industrial x-ray (radiography testing / RT) can be taken to see if dissimiliar metal inclusions exist. And this could be followed by a PMI examination (Positive Material Identification). A PMI test unit can identify metals in a couple of seconds. These types of tests are called "Non Destructive Testing" and are very affordable. Just plain old common sense stopped this fake gold bar from being passed on.

How did the "old fox's nose" smell out this fake? It's simple, it wasn't as dense as gold. Tungsten is heavy but not nearly as heavy as gold. If you really want to fake a gold coin you only have a few choices of metals to substitute to make it perfect. Uranium is one, mercury is another, and platinum is perfect. But all three of those are undesirable for counterfeiting (for obvious reasons). Simple water displacement would prove the bar a fake without cutting.

The liquid displacement method fails gracefully, if the amount of W is small in a fake bar (0.2cm³/kg). I guess, the old fox's nose triggered on the sound. Au is very soft (=low speed of sound), while W is hard and brittle (=high speed of sound). I suspect, 'suitable' alloys from Pb, U238 and Bi, that fool even ultrasonic tests, will appear soon on the 'market', as the gold price is on the rise.

Another insurance against fakes besides buying in smaller non-profitable sizes like 1 oz is to buy gold from a national mint. Like a Canadian Gold Maple Leaf, American Eagle or S Africa Kreuger's. They mint in 1 oz coins or smaller and certify their purity. If these mints have any integrity they will also prosecute anyone with fakes that they come across so as not to taint the prestige and good name of the mint. That's not to say it's a guarantee against fakes.

@gregblanchardnz A tungsten core inside could easily be detected by the conductivity, as gold has low resistance and tungsten is far higher resistance mearly placing a potential voltage across a bar and measuring the current then comparing it to a known good bar would detect a fake. Also tungsten will conduct sound differently to gold so mearly tapping the bar and watching it resonate on an osilliscope then comparing it to a known real bar would make a fake easy to detect.

The key is to buy from a reputable dealer, and it might get to the point where you need to get your own testing equipment, including Fisch testers.

This is why the Gold price has been stuck around $1,100 for so long. For all we know the real price of Gold is $2,000 or $4,000. But they don't want the Gold bugs to find out that the dollar has already crashed. When word gets out and they find all of the Tungsten gold bars, we might see a HUGE surge in the price of Gold and a Dollar crash simultaneously.

Oh my god this whole thing is hilarious. If anyone wants you to not to invest in gold, it's the bankers and people with money to buy a lot of it.
The price of gold is still rising, it's really safe invest, compared to most of the stocks on market. And you don't have to buy the actual physical gold, just invest in the gold markets.
Knowledge is power, indeed...
