I agree this is not an ideal situation as this does lead to the destroying of elephants who get too friendly, however what where they supposed to do, running or panic would only spook the animal. They did not intentionally feed it, this is just Botswana. Before you start trolling I am from Phikwe and seen much worse. As a last point if you do decide to visit this countries magnificent wildlife remember this could have easily been tragic and Moremi is not a zoo.
unfortunately these friends of yours, that spent the last 60 years "living" in the bush are the biggest problem for our national parks at this stage. they become arrogant and think they know everything about the bush! it was their arrogance that allowed him to come that close in the first place! now people from abroad sees this video and tries the same with an aggresive bull, see the problem? and yes, i AM a ranger who's been living in the bush my whole life!!!!!!

No they wouldn't have killed him! This is wild life conservation in Africa (Moremi in Botswana) - the best in the world. The only problem here is the idiots that sat quietly when he came closer. Get in your cars or get out of his way. These are wild animals - not a domesticated thing in a New York zoo! You are lucky to be alive.
@SuperKwagga1 The people you refer to are good friends of mine and have spent over 60 yrs living in the African bush, probably a good sight more than you! To make a move with an Ellie so close could have been fatal, and any good game ranger will tell you they did the right thing by staying still. As for wildlife conservation in Africa, maybe you, the expert, could tell me what a great job these wonderful African Govts are doing about stopping the poaching of these incredible animals????
It was probably far more dangerous for the elephant. I am sure he got killed shortly afterwards, as he started to be a nuisance for the tourists. Shame! He was so gentle with the people, as you can see.

Completely irresponsible to allow an elephant to get this close to camp. It will keep doing this now until it is shot. Terrible.
