I just cannot understand why they are not still making music. M.J. could have done more with them. The voices are absolutely BEAUTIFUL. How many artists can do what they did. They delivered and more. Definately in my 'Best Of' Those were the good old days when music was deep. Love it and more.
@Mcvideos92 mimi chimes in at :20 seconds on the harmony. without her vocals it would not sound right at all. nicci and maxee sound great together, but when mimi comes in she kicks up their harmonies and you hear the full power of their voices together. i agree with you. mimi is not weak.
I don't know 3 of these "new age" singers you can put together today who can harmonize like that. (Thinking....................) Nope, still got nothing.
someone on another brownstone video said any 3 of the singers could be the lead because they are all so strong. now how often do you see that....this is amazing
These gorgeous women are the very definition of TALENT, and the reason people who use autotune are total LOSERS. If I could sing half this well, I'd go on tour.
@Adonisdawg I don't think you can even really compare En Vogue and Brownstone though. Brownstone was true R&B. En Vogue dabbled in a plethora of genre's. Terry's voice was very gospel, Maxine's voice was Motown R&B, Dawn's was Rock, and Cindy's was very pop. Plus Dawn and Terry could hit whistle register notes too. So En Vogue and Brownstone are at two completely different levels. But I totally agree with you man. Brownstone and En Vogue are the best female groups vocally.
@singingbrother YEP! Rest his precious soul MJ! WE love you MJ! MJ told them that he loved them and signed them on the spot! He was so impressed by their vocals! They sang on the spot for him! I loved this groups so much back in the day! I still love them! This is to talent!
@ladivinapr their voices are stronger, but u telling en vogue harmonies aint tight? they have the best harmonies in this performance as much as i like brownstone they were a little shaky
@wozniacki15 To me, En Vogue and Brownstone should not be compared as they are on the same level, En Vogue, however, were the total package. Their style, harmonies, everything about them were spot on. They are the "ideal" girl group. Brownstone is like three friends getting together and singing their behinds off. More laidback, no set style. BOTH AWESOME groups though!
This is why I like En Vogue and Eternal so much, it's all about the singing, I'm VERY impressed that Brownstone are singing the harmonies and backing vocals without a tape.
This is really rare, they are actually singing all the harmonies LIVE without a backing track. Even a very talented vocal group like SWV sometimes used a backing track for the harmonies. God, I miss the 90s!
I understand they're flexin their vocal skillz but this song was too fly to not have any of the beat and for them to just be sittin thru the whole thing. This beat was ill
Wooooo! Their vocals are SO ON POINT!! Music isn't even half as good as this anymore, it's all about image and popularity, talent comes last unfortunately. :(
I remember when the one on the end(far right) left the group.. It had nothing to do with creative differences she was sick and needed to take some time off.. They were explaining the situation on a an episode on BET with Donnie Simpson..

At first it was said that Mimi left due to health issues, but later it was revealed that the group was having conflicts with one another. The group has disbanded completely with no hopes of ever getting back together. Nicci still performs, sings, acts, Maxee is a European star, Mimi, is a teacher and has left the music industry completely, Kina, still sings and performs as well.
Mimi was killing with the higher register! but as a unit they did the damn thing with this song live. I liked how Nicci and Maxwee switched off the "say it/do its" during the chorus
@ blitz8boi - Short haired girl is Nicci, Braids is Maxee, Pretty lightskinned was Mimi I think. Mimi had problems with her vocal cords if I remember correctly, and she was replaced with Kina, who eventually went on to have a solo career of her own as did Nicci Gilbert
The bridge starting @ 2:47 was watertight! However take note of the falsetto intro notes where its a 2-part with Nicci and Maxee, then Mimi joins in for a 3-part run with her high pitch falsetto @ 0:20, perhaps a pitch too high. Somehow I cant help thinking that it didnt go down well with Maxee, watch her look of distaste @ 0:23 after Mimis input. It was like How you gon' mess that up? maybe those vocal dispute rumours with Mimi had some truth to them after all.
Yeah, Maxee rolled her eyes at her at 0:23. I thought I was the only one that saw it and didn't want to say anything cause I didn't want to look crazy. She may have been a pitch too high but she still killed the rest of the performance. I don't think Maxee should have held that against her, because on the TOTP If you Love me performance both Nicci AND Maxee were pitchy, and it was evident Maxee was trying to outsing Nicci.
I don' t think that was an eye roll that wa sjust how maxee was..strange faces... further more non of htem was perfect not even nicci with her always gotta outsing the rest - and the downfall of the group was the fact that nicci got the big head and maxee just followed suit - mimi did the right thing by leaving since it was evident she was alone within the group -
None of them was perfect but their young ego's made them competitive in the begining. The second album saw a less disciplined attitude in the girls. It was more about power. Mimi was more than capable but not as powerful as Max, Nicci or Kina.
I agree Mimi was a very talented vocalist and IMO fitted in well with group. But in the begining (From the Bottom Up) Nicci and Maxee's young egos made them competitive. With age and a new album (Still Climbing) they found a vocalist on the same wavelength in Kina and perhaps relaxed with their vocal discipline hence Nicci and Maxee have been known to be pitchy in some performances but in terms of power Maxee, Kina and Nicci were way above Mimi. And IMO Maxee was unmatched in range.
the 2nd album was interesting - kina in terms of power was on the level of the other two but mimi posessed a natural gift - she was camera friendly - and had this inviting sweet edge that everyone loved and prolly was the reason why strife began because when one member gets all the attention and not cuz of the singing thas when the shit hits the fan
Interesting. You may have a point. But it sounds as though you're suggesting that Kina wasn't as camera friendly or appealing as Mimi!? I agree Mimi definately had the sweet street edge and angelic fresh face, Maxee was the choclate honey with the hazelnut shaped eyes and Nicci's strong voice and confident sex appeal fitted her in well. I do however know a lot of people that found Kina to be one sexiest members in the Group. But that' a whole other argument. But point definately taken.
kina had her moments like the TOTP's 5 miles to empty performance - she was the sexiest - the hair n maike up did it - the TOTP's grapevube was nice too she made the others look like dogs - lips was poppin and thehaior was laid - but it took a min before kina was liked period - her 1st outing on BET with all 4 members was almost a fiasco cuz she was all over the place singin even nicci had to calm her down too bad that clip was removed
Yeah - they were performing the "If you love me" remix feat Craig Mack who also was on the show - all 4 wore the same jogging suit - at the breakdown they let kina come forward and she was crazy add libbing - went a lil overboard u could tell it was her first live gig cuz nicci had to pull her coattail and say yo let's break it down - they all 4 started to harmonize on da "oh I oh I".. then mimi stopped singin politely sorta now to say - i'm bowing out (irony) years later
Either which way they broke up they never recovered and that shows how much Mimi has been missed. I hoped they reconciled by this point, although I heard Mimi's a teacher I wish they would do a performance. As far as Nicci now, if you watch her If U Love Me performance in Japan, she can't sing as high.
You make some very good points Cococure. Nicci and Maxee were definitely stronger when it came to vocal power, but add in Mimi's soprano the sound altogether was incredible. They did find a better match with Kina and Still Climbing had some excellent cuts, the downside being that signature sound was gone which turned a lot of people off from the group. though IMO, still climbing was a very good follow-up.
@Cococure83 what a load of rubbish!!!! Mimis soprano would blow Kina out the door!!! want proof? watch Grapevine live performance Kina struggled big time especially at the end! Mimi always hit those notes with ease!!!
@Zeebo89 Mimi was good singer but she wasn't as powerful as the rest. Everyone has off days, but Mimi was limited. Her lack of imput 'From The Bottom Up' gave it away. The 2 songs out of 12 tracks Mimi has lead on, she lacked technicality and confidence e.g. "Wipe It Up". She holds it together on Grapevyne. If Mimi had the goods she would of lead on more than just 2 out of the 12 songs. In harmony, being a soprano behind two vocal beasts like Max and Nic, is a nice comfort zone.
@Cococure83 Mimi did hold it together on Grapevyne, and I'd like to pretend "Wipe it up" didn't exist lol that track itself was wack. She blew the end of "Don't Cry for me" with her powerful adlibs and her soft voice as the colead on "Deeper Feelings" provided a balance as well as her lovely soprano made that arguably one of the best songs on the album. As you said before, she may not have had the same vocal power, but she blended perfectly.
@Cococure83 Oo i know this was a year ago but..great singing is not always about power. I like the original 3 better, Mimi did fine with her leads. She was also a co-writer. The purpose of a group is to only have one lead singer and others who can lead if needed.
The second line up with Kina was completely too competitive, Kina is a rough house not a powerhouse lol. She was made to be solo bc they absolutely were yelling over each other which sometimes made them sound off key.
@Zeebo89 Speaking of grapevine live, theres a video on here with the original three doing grapevine live, mimi hits that soprano note in the opening like it was nothing...
@Cococure83 you dont know what you are talking about! those leads were worked out like that for breath control purposes. and Mimi left because she had asthma issues! and who wouldnt singing like they did! i dont like it when people speculat sooo much like you did ! you werent there! and i bet you cant sing a note!
I'm entitled to an opinion, am I not? That's why commenting is a key feature of YouTube. People will always have their own estimation. Try not to take it too seriously, it's nothing to spill your coffee over
@MsGJohnson I can see what you're saying about the parts being divided up for breathing control but I heard the two girls who stayed in Brownstone til the end ran that light skinned one out of the group and that the bigger one (I remember them as Nikki and Maxee but don't remember who is who) was worse that Diana Ross with the egotrip
@Cococure83 . no problem the coffee is still in the cup. LOL! but opinions and facts are two different things. You were stating yours as fact, as if you were there. And being one who has been there done that, I was a bit offended. Because i know the struggles they went through. But if i came off too rough i am sorry. I am very passionate about people and things i love.
damn this takes me back there vocals are on fire now that is true singing there are a few groups out there that have each one able to sing lead and dont get me started on when they blend there voice's together!!!! True talent ladies always a fan...
In the chorus, Nicci is singing the middle parts, bt all others she's singing the lows (pre-chorus (except the second "but if you want my heart...") and "oh I, oh I"),
AMAZING performance here. MiMi was KILLING that soprano like it was easy. I've never seen Maxee cut loose like that, she ripped it. Nicci was on point like usual. Three AMAZING singers. They don't do it like this anymore...
damn,they can sang.

Really? I would have loved to have seen that performance, all 4 of them, including Mimi?
Cococure83 2 years ago 7

Cococure: "Maxee was unmatched in range."
You SAID that!!! True!!!!!

@Cococure83 what a load of rubbish!!!! Mimis soprano would blow Kina out the door!!! want proof? watch Grapevine live performance Kina struggled big time especially at the end! Mimi always hit those notes with ease!!!
Zeebo89 1 year ago
