I remember staying up late to watch this after the news on a school night. Best cop show ever, IMO. I wish they would bring it out on DVD or at least put it back on tv so I can record it. I loved Giambone!
In May 1985 my senior class travelled from Ohio to Toronto. One evening, by chance, we walked into an area where they were shooting some new police show. We took it in for a while, then moved on. A few months later, I really got hooked on Night Heat. Thanks for posting and triggering some good memories.
My girlfriend knew Jeff Wincott back in the Montreal 1998 to 1999. Jeff was a pretty cool guy and he was doing a couple of movies in Montreal. He was working on a mini-series at the time but the name escapes us.
Loved this show. Was looking up something & for some reason this show came into my head and I wanted to look it up. The only problem was I couldn't remember the name. So I said to myself, "what was that Canadian cop show I use to watch late at night called?". So I find a listing of all TV cop shows since TV was invented and as I'm going thru the list I get to the M's(no lie) and I say to myself, "Night Heat" before I ever got to the N's! Freaking weird how the subconscious works. Luv'd this show
and also, Sonny Grosso and Larry Jacobsen who were the Co-Producers of Night HEat have also Co-Produced other TV Cops Shows such as True Blue for NBC and Top Cops for CBS
So much memories, this was a really good show, i was always allowed to stay up when this was on, with a glass of coca cola and a bowl of crisps, a real treat.
The theme song is epic. I distinctly remember the reporter always drinking milk.
I loved this TV SHOW. CBS-TV tried briefly to put it on their prime time schedule. I wish it was available on DVD COLLECTION. The theme song really rocked, and detectives Kevin and Giambrone were excellent ! The supporting cast which included Clark Johnson (Of future "Homicide" and "Colors" fame) were outstanding also.
I was a master control operator and used to monitor this show when it aired on CBS Late Night in the early 1990s.
Filmed in Toronto, some viewers mistakenly thought the show was set in NYC. However, in the four seasons the show was on the air, there was no mention of where the show was set.
You are exactly right. They never specifically said on the show where Night Heat was set (something that the show shared with Hill Street Blues). But, in the last two years of the show, Night Heat did become more openly Canadian. There was an episode when Canadian boxer Donny LeLon did a cameo apperence at the time when he was preparing to fight Ray Leonard, and the bearded detective referred to LeLon as the "Home Town Boy".
There was another episode of Night Heat when they had people paying to have their pictures taken with cardboard cutouts of President Reagan and Canadian PM Brian Mulrooney. They didn't say that they were in Toronto, but Canadian identity was suggested with the inclusion of the Mulrooney cutout.
Although I was in my teens when the series originally aired, I did not watch it until the mid/late 90s when it aired nightly on cable network WWOR-AEC. It was a great show.
It will be nice once the show is available on DVD.
I was a teenager 4 most of this show's original run--some of that time as a college student. And to think, this is before the late night landscape evolved into what it is today after Letterman's 1993 network switch. CBS offered this as token alternative to NBC's "Tonight" & "Late Night" with Carson & Letterman. Now, instead of Carson or SCOTT Hylands as Detective Kevin "O.B." O'Brien on "Night Heat", viewers have Conan O'BRIEN in Carson's "Tonight" chair. But I remember this show affectionately.
I remember "Night Heat" affectionately because it's part of my growing to appreciate the late night and wee hours. There such calm in the overnight--you can't beat it for serenity and quasi-camp or low budget shows like this are a part of that charm. But growing to appreciate the overnight is like losing one's virginity, I think. You remember when you thought 12:00 was late because you were a little kid. Then as you hit puberty and develop masculine strength, you're strong enough to stay on & on
I don't think it was every episode, but at least once, there were snippets of this theme interspersed in the show after main theme had played. It may have been heard just once at the start, just after the theme had played (maybe after commercial?) Or it may have been repeated several times spread throughout the hour. But, I remember a dark street scene, where the viewer's attention is summoned by the background vocalists intoning a cappella: "I feel your heartbeat". Anyone else remember this?
it was a great show hell they filmed Toronto as new York loved it!! (trying to remember what the eposode was called were obrien's girlfriend wreaks her Datsun 260Z )
I loved that show I used to watch at as a teen while Doing my homework at night. I thought it was phil collins who sang it. But realized I may never find out who really does sing it
I use to watch this at 2:00 A.M. on CBS! It was a great show with a lot of wisdom and lesson built in to the show - kind of like the 50s and 60s "Naked City" TV series. Rate it 5 stars out of 5 stars.
I looked everywhere for the series on DVD but no luck!
Excellent, thanx for posting. I'm trying to remember the younger detective's name. I think it was Jamo or Jocko or something. Book em Jamo, they would say!
@castingtherunes His name was Giambone (pronounced jee-uhm-bo-nee) and they called him "Jambone". I think you're confusing this with Hawaii Five-0's "Book em Danno".
Man, I remember watching this in the 80's and thoughr this was just as good as Hunter, Hill Street Blues, and Miami Vice. The theme song was & is funky as hell! Wish I could find the full length version, too, but Night Heat was one helluva show!
I STILL love this show. Used to stay up late at night back home in the states and watch it on CBS Late Night. Always did love the song and thought it would be great as a single. One of the best TV themes ever! Thank so much for posting!
The full version of this theme was released in Canada as both a 7" and a 12" single. I would like to see the 12" versions released on CD along with composer Domenic Troiano's (1946-2005) other TV themes. It would make a great tribute to a great musician. R.I.P. Donnie!!! We Miss You!!!
I bought the 7" version for my dad's birthday way back in the 80's because he liked it so much... Thanks for the info, know I have to track it down again!
Thank you for uploading this video. I was a huge Night Heat fan in the mid to late 80's. As others have said, that theme song brings back wonderful memories. The show aired late night on Thursdays. This "Night Heat" theme song first reminded me of downtown Indianapolis, especially right across the street from the downtown Indianapolis Greyhound bus station, then reminded me of downtown Los Angeles, especially the corner of 7th and Main Streets, and it still does today.
Troiano did the theme music(as well as scoring the series),but the credits never showed who exactly did sung the theme.
And to follow dirkster's comments: I'm surprised NBC hasn't picked up the U.S. rerun rights to this series and dropped it on their Sleuth channel, considering it would be a good fit there.
Actually, the singer was Roy Kenner. Roy was a long time associate and vocalist of Domenic Troiano's all the way back to the band "Mandala". B. J. Cook was co-composer with Domenic on "Night Heat" and the short-lived "Hot Shots" themes. A while back I saw a 12" single with several versions of the "Night Heat" theme on eBay. The label said "Domenic Troiano featuring vocal by Roy Kenner". That is how I know. I wanted to buy it, but it was sold before I could.
I can't find the Neon Rider theme, but if you're interested, I know where the show is still aired. It's on the Canadian station named DejaView. Apparently Night Heat was also on this station, but was pulled off. So if there's a way to view the station on the web try it out, or else get a friend that lives in Canada to record it.
This is one of my top fave late night shows from the 80's....my late teen and early 20 years....it seems to run in syndication in canada, but I can't find it available anywhere in the U.S. On cable or on DVD...If anyone knows otherwise, please advise....
Please, somebody post the shows on YouTube, thanks.
