I may have to take a ride down there one day....I live in CT and I love old and abandoned places and buildings. I seem to get an attachment to them for some reason.
i see a lot of potential for redevelopment of that area. i havent been down there in awhile but man, it is a ghose town...that really sucks they goota move a long in selling the peninsula to the us fish and wildlife for the proposed 2 million dollars...as long as we still have pulbic acess to the peninsula why not?? better start makin MOves harkins cuz right now, i think miron would have initated this shit into place and allow things to get started.
i had a cottage up there it was the big grey one next to my cousins (the white one. i had a lot of friends up there. It stinks that people broke in and graffid everywhere :(
I think one of the reasons i like these ghost towns is because of the artifacts left behind, like the 1995-96 phone book, old TVs, and the like. It's kind of like going back in a time machine.
Yeah. One of the pics is of a letter; you can't read it but it's postmarked sometime in 1982, and it's sealed. There was a whole pile of old mail in that one house, most of it sealed.
For some reason I am obsessed with this island and other "ghost towns". Did the people lose their investment in their homes? Did the city pay people for their homes? I noticed on mapquest that there is a road to the other side of the peninsula, why can't they just extend that road into pleasure beach?
Hey, wonderful photos and great documentation....I went there yesterday and have to say it was one of the most eerie places I have ever seen.
I can see by some of the photos that you went inside the houses. I didn't because it was getting dark, but was thinking about going back in the summer to do some photography and check them out. Would you recommend going inside or is it too dangerous? Or is there any particular house I should check out?
I was by myself that day, so I only went in a few houses that looked safe. Iv'e been other times and I usually go with a friend just in case something happens. If you got hurt out there you'd be totally helpless by yourself.
After the bridge burned down, there was no way for the town to get emergency vehicles out there, and no money to build a new bridge, so the town terminated the leases, and the people had to leave.
It depends on the cop I guess. Honestly, every time I went out there I saw people walking around on the beach past the no trespassing signs; fishing, walking their dogs, children playing... clearly no one cares.
There are no longer working cameras out there, that was only when people were living out there. If you are caught out there, you can be subject to arrest, but the cops do not patrol it because it's so remote.
I spent hours on the beach with the fd when the cottages, I was very upset at what had happen to the place. I remeber telling one of my guys that this looks like a cool place back in the day. But this si what happens when greedy politions get envoled with stuff. Oh and as far as the bridge being burnt down by " a cigerette" Is bs This bridge was built like a brick shit house. No way a ciggerette burnt it down!

Yeah, I live in Fairfield, close to a fantastic view of the city. The real person to blame is the asshole who bured the bridge!
