The point I am trying to make is that It is hard to come up with good scripts for a large number of episodes.
English sense of humour is full of rudeness, derision, ridicule, arrogance, understatement, overstatement, etc, the combination of which is often used to generate "stupidity" just for the sake of fun.
English sense of humour is hard to appreciate for non-English and many scripts are hardly translatable.
Similar series based on "taking the piss out of other people" I remember are Allo, Allo!, Porterhouse Blue and Jeeves and Worcester, though the level of piss taking and its target vary amongst them.
I love them all and very much miss my friends in England. They are all rude and arrogant but good people. They don't intend harm on others.
@Kenta19191919 Well now you've succeeded in making me feel awful for being a jerk to you and I have to apologize as well. It seems I missed your point and I've been unfair in my judgement of you. It's just that I love this show a lot and am sad it has not become more popular, so I'm a bit overzealous in defending it. Take care and thanks for the recommendations!
Do continue to defend English sense of humour. There aren't a lot of people who can appreciate its beauty outside England.
Whenever I bump into a group of German tourists in Tokyo looking lost, I approach them knowing that they are German. I ask them where they come from and when they say they are from Germany, I say "Oh, we fought the same war together!" They look totally confused.
I think the script writer felt that enough piss taking was done on the French aristocracies and further felt that doing more of it would have simply bored the audience.
I personally loved this series myself and if more came out, I would have bought the DVDs.
I hope this follow-up comment makes my earlier comment clear.
I happened to discover on YOUTUBE that some German carp anglers say "oooooh! dick! ohooooo! dick!" as they operate their rod. If this becomes ever known to English, we have another piss taking material at hand.
@ERstat77 - completely agree with you. This was an amazingly well written show. It should have been promoted more. It's easily one of my favourite shows of all time.
@ERstat77 Well the reason was that the sets and costumes were very expensive and they couldn't spend more money but as a american who watches French & Saunders religiously i was sad that they only made 6 episodes
@ERstat77 I agree! Apparently it was trashed by the critics and did not get a large audience. I think it's brilliant; the research involved, the dialogues, the timing... I can see it over and over and laugh my head off!
thanks!!!

I don't know why they never did more. Maybe the corsets were too much hassle? (believe me, i've worked at the Renaissance faire!)

Because the script writer run out of ideas. You cannot be stupid indefinitely.

@Kenta19191919 - are you smoking crack ?? British comedies are loved around the world. British comedies outsell comedies from every other country.

And as we all know, that very nearly became the fate of The Black Adder for the same reason - imagine missing out on three series of that!

@ERstat77 Probably because most people don't know enough about that time period to get some of the jokes about customs and such.
