Just a note to those making their own charcoal. Make sure that you are not using chemical treated wood. The resins used to treat the wood will produce some nasty stuff. Just a tip.
Make sure you CLEAN your gravel and sand, folks; burning them in a fire would be a good start to decontaminate them. Also, though this makes for a good demonstration, it would be more efficient use of your filter to strain muddy/dirty water in larger quantities through a coarser filter in a larger container, then run that semi-purified water through the unit you worked so hard to make. Might also want to boil it first, to prevent any biological contaminants growing in your filter. =^[.]^=
